Hi All
The Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) have a
vacancy for an additional member to join a small specialist team
providing a Scientific Computing capability in our new AgriBio
facility at Bundoora and in future, potentially other sites across
Victoria.
This is a senior role in a team supporting a mixed computing
environment, ranging from a High-Throughput 2000-core Linux Cluster
with hundreds of Terabytes of storage, all the way down to down to
dedicated Windows desktop PC’s attached to scientific devices and even
the odd embedded system. This is not a purely back-room role, we sit
out in the open with our users and interact face-to-face.
Scientific Computing is a dynamic environment and we are about to
undertake a refresh of our cluster, so there is always something new
on the horizon, as well as the day-to-day break-fix.
As mentioned, it is a mixed environment and a small team, so we
require skills, or the willingness to acquire them, across a wide
range of areas, including HPC/HTC, Linux (RHEL/CentOS), Windows server
and desktop environments, networking, storage (EMC) and VMWare. While
we do as much as we can with Linux and Open Source, Windows is still
an important part of the mix in Scientific Computing and we must
interact with the Corporate Computing environment too, so, yes, we
really do need Windows skills :)
This is a Life-Sciences organization, so experience in scientific
computing is a distinct advantage and Life-Sciences or Computational
Biology even more so.
