Linux Australia is restarting the Regional Delegates Program from previous years. These grants aim to reduce the financial barriers to attending linux.conf.au 2013, by subsidising the registration and travel costs of contributors to the FOSS community who are students, on a low income, and others who would otherwise have difficulty affording the cost of attending the conference. How do I apply? Our priority will be to maximise the number of attendees we can assist. Consideration will be given to grant requests from outside Australia and New Zealand; however, due to the larger costs, we would have to balance each such application against the number of local delegates we could otherwise support. Delegates who need to be accompanied by a guardian or caregiver (e.g, minors or persons with special needs) should include these details in their grant request. Minors should include contact details for their parent or guardian and have them sign the application. Your application should: * Provide background information about your contribution to or involvement with the open source community * Explain what you hope to learn from the conference. * Show financial circumstances which would otherwise prevent you from attending the conference. * Provide details of what assistance you would require in order to attend. Hi everyone, Just a note of many thanks to our speakers Russell and Daniel for their efforts tonight, and for travelling so far to be with us. I'm sure you'll all agree it was a valuable and worthwhile session, and the general sentiment of the night was that we're keen to run more in the future. Just as a recap if you couldn't join us (poor George got vlined and metro'd :( ), Russell provided a very interesting overview of ZFS and BTRFS as alternative file systems, and Daniel went through a number of barriers to open source adoption in education, which sparked a group discussion on Microsoft licensing practices and how they are designed to limit FOSS adoption. Andrew Van Slageren rounded off the night with a show and tell of his Melbourne Wireless hardware, including a Nano bridge and Mikrotik router. Thanks all for your assistance in packing/cleaning up - very much appreciated. Again, it was fantastic to meet everyone face to face, and very much looking forward to future catchups. Hi everyone, There's been some interest in a Geelong group meeting face to face, which is fantastic. The lovely people at the Uni have been kind enough to give us a room (without charge yay!) for the evening, so you're all warmly invited to meet, catch up and share your favourite open source and Linux news, stories and opinions. Three people have confirmed so far (thanks for confirming) so if you're coming please let me know so that beer and pizza can be specced appropriately :-) Not being a beer drinker (blasphemy I hear you cry!), your recommendations are sought. Pizza preferences or unpreferences also sought. Unfortunately no-one's volunteered to present (yet), so if anyone would like to take the floor please just sing out. It's a nice presentation space, with VGA connectors, dual projectors etc. You're welcome to bring hardware or show and tell with you (like Raspberry Pis etc), soldering kit might be pushing it, but let's see how we go! My aspirations are to eventually work in IT Security, however that is quite a while away. I use Ubuntu 12.04 at home (Dell Inspiron 7720) and I am quickly learning the Ubuntu OS. Despite my personal preference for Ubuntu, I use/support Windows at work and 99% of my experience/knowledge is in the Windows environment. I'm not an expert in anything but I love learning all different aspects of computing and information technology and would love to share my knowledge and learn from others around me. I am looking forward to building a home server in the near future and experimenting with the opportunities that creates. I'm also very excited to be attending my first computing related conference - RuxCon - in a weeks time. I'd be happy to hear from any other Geelong people attending.
