I'm a member of the AusTech Forums, wherein are found many kind and helpful people who never get irritated by halfwits like me.
One of them told me about this Geelong group for Linux users so I made haste to sign up.
I was once pretty computer-savvy, back in the days when my husband was alive and we each had a desktop loaded with Win XP. It was in the period of XP's successful life that Chic lost his; and I've had technical input from no-one since then.
I've managed well with Win 7, but so loathed 8 that I never loaded it; and I've put up with 10 because - what else ?
Turns out that Linux is the what else.
I'm in the process of looking for a laptop to replace (eventually) this horrible Acer Aspire 5, which I hate. But as I'm on the age pension and have no assets at all, there are very finite limits to what I can afford. The folk at AusTech are helping me there, too.
What I should like to do, in a perfect world, is talk to one or some of you to get more close input on the right distro - or at least, possibly the right one (as I'm told Mint cinnamon by one bloke and plain Debian by another, and so on). In advance of getting the new or reconditioned laptop, that is; because I don't know when that's going to be.

Subject: Deakin Uni & Cyber Security CRC Bid - Prospectus (Expressions for SME partners)
Sent on behalf of:
[Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: D:\SED Consulting (from 25 May 2012)\Clients\ICTlogo.jpg]
Deakin University is partnering with four other Australian Universities and major industry leaders, in a bid to establish a Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre (CRC). CRCs receive funding from the federal government https://www.crc.gov.au/Pages/default.aspx and for this bid we are asking for in excess of $24m to develop world leading responses in cyber security. Among our major partners are Lockheed Martin, Australian Federal Police, Commonwealth Bank, Cisco Systems, Woodside, Telstra.
The usual governance structure for a CRC is to set it up as a discreet company with the partners as members/shareholders. The funds (both partner contributions and government funds) are usually pooled and project proposals are invited. The bid partners determine the shape of the projects and are thus in an excellent position to put in a proposal for some of the work.
The bid is currently looking for more small-to-medium business partners. The minimum cash contribution for a small-to-medium business is $5000 per annum for 5 years, as well as in-kind contributions. If you are interested in discussing this opportunity please contact melanie.randall(a)deakin.edu.au<mailto:melanie.randall@deakin.edu.au> or 0427 741 842.

Hi Guys,
Kathy helped me out and introduced me to this group. I would love to cross
pollinate with this group.
I'm trying to establish an open source hackathon program in Geelong, and
I've got lots of development to do. Getting awareness, finding
participants, getting sponsorship and finding volunteers for each event - I
only scale so far!
Please sign up to my newsletter if you are interested, and I'm sure we'll
meet up eventually and change the world :)
Check out some of the ideas, I have put forward so far, would be great to
get a mix of sources for more ideas -

18 November 2013
auDA is currently reviewing the WHOIS Policy (2010-06) and has released an Issues Paper for public comment.
WHOIS is the service that allows people to look up certain details in relation to a registered domain name. The WHOIS service discloses only a subset of the data held in the registry database. auDA does not currently provide access to other types of registry data, other than to law enforcement bodies.
This review covers the following separate but related questions:
1. Should there be any changes to auDA's WHOIS Policy covering the collection, disclosure and use of WHOIS data for .au domain names?
2. Should access to .au domain name data (other than via WHOIS) be opened up?
The closing date for submissions is Friday 31 January 2014.

Dear Colleagues,
You're receiving this email as we've identified you as a key stakeholder in
our bid to host linux.conf.au in Geelong in 2015, or have previously
indicated to us that you'd like to be kept informed of developments here.
*We're almost there*
We are excited to share with you that the Linux Australia Council will
shortly be reaching a decision about the host city for 2015. We expect the
Council to have made a decision either on, or shortly after, October 22nd
and we will be sure to share the outcome with you all as quickly as
possible.
It has been an exciting, eye opening process and we are very optimistic
about our chances. Hopefully all of the hard work along with your support
and encouragement will pay off and then the real work can begin.
*What happens if we win?*
*
*
If we are successful in securing linux.conf.au 2015 Geelong (LCA - By The
Bay) we will begin putting into place our project plan (available here:
http://goo.gl/M2sFi2). At this early stage we would be seeking interested
individuals to join the core team to assist in preparing for and running
the conference.
Some of you may have also heard that we have already tentatively secured
one of our keynote speakers. Catarina Mota has told us that she would be
delighted to join us in Geelong in 2015. We would need to begin contacting
further keynote speakers as soon as possible as many of their schedules are
already filling up.
*What happens if we are unsuccessful?*
*
*
If we are unsuccessful we will begin planning to submit a bid for
linux.conf.au 2016 Geelong. Once again, we would be interested to hear from
anyone who would like to further involve themselves in the process for next
years' bid.
As always your comments, questions and feedback are welcomed.
With kind regards
David Bell and Kathy Reid

Press Release.
For immediate Release.
The linux.conf.au <http://linux.conf.au> 2014 organizing team are
calling for volunteers to help with the conference.
We are encouraging all students, graduates and linux hobbyists who would
like to contribute to the conference's success to step up and offer your
services as a volunteer. This is a good opportunity to get a glimpse of
how a conference is run, and to get some real hands on experience in
many aspects of conference operations.
We're looking for volunteers to work in many areas but the help and
registration desk, general administration, and audio visual team members
are the most sought after. We need volunteers who are willing to commit
to at least four days of the conference, we'll try and allocate some
free time to attend a few talks for each volunteer, but that will depend
on the number of volunteers and on the work load at any point during the
conference.
In return we'll feed and cloth you during the conference. There's a real
buzz to being part of the organizing team, and volunteering is a very
rewarding way to get involved in the conference.
We'll be opening the registration for volunteers soon, please visit our
site or subscribe to the volunteers mailing list shown below for updated
information. You can subscribe to the mailing list from here:
http://lists.lca2014.linux.org.au/mailman/listinfo/volunteers_lists.lca2014…
For more information on volunteering, please take a look at our web site
at https://lca2014.linux.org.au/register/volunteers. If you need extra
information on volunteering please send an email to our volunteer email
address â?? volunteers at lists.lca2014.linux.org.au

We look forward to hearing from you.

Press Release.
For immediate Release.
The linux.conf.au <http://linux.conf.au> 2014 team are pleased to
announce the second keynote speaker for their conference.
Kate Chapman is the Executive Director of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap
Team.
The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) is an initiative of
OpenStreetMap to apply the principles of open source and open data
sharing towards humanitarian response and economic development.
The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team believes that freely available,
up-to-date geographic data can be vital in responding to a disaster.
They help communities and responders to utilize the OpenStreetMap data,
and encourage them to contribute and update the data.
Over the past two years Kate has been primarily based in Indonesia where
she has lead the AusAID funded HOT program. The program Scenario
Development for Contingency Planning (SD4CP) is a joint initiative of
the Indonesian and Australian governments through BNPB (Indonesian
Disaster Management Agency) and AusAID that aims to teach disaster
mangers how to develop realistic impact scenario for contingency
planning. HOT teaches disaster mangers to spatially analysis the
combination of scientific hazard model outputs with community knowledge
through the open-source software InaSAFE (Indonesia Scenario Assessment
For Emergencies). OpenStreetMap is one of the keys elements of this
procedure, as it allows the disaster mangers to draw on community
knowledge to identify important buildings such as schools and hospitals
that potentially be impacted during a disaster.
We're really pleased to have Kate coming to talk with us as her personal
efforts and her teams work represents an organization that we can really
hold up as a shining example of how the open source model truly does work.
linux.conf.au <http://linux.conf.au> is an annual open source conference
organised by Linux Australia. In 2014 the conference will be held in
Perth, Western Australia from the 6th January to the 10th.
