linux.conf.au Regional Delegates' Programme
by Kathy Reid 20 Dec '12

20 Dec '12

Forwarding on behalf of the linux.conf.au team as there may be people in South Western Victoria who could benefit from this programme. Regards, Kathy Regional Delegates' Programme Posted on December 18, 2012 <https://team.linux.conf.au/wordpress/2012/12/18/regional-delegates-programm…> Good news from Linux Australia for regional delegates! Linux Australia is restarting the Regional Delegates Program from previous years. These grants aim to reduce the financial barriers to attending linux.conf.au 2013, by subsidising the registration and travel costs of contributors to the FOSS community who are students, on a low income, and others who would otherwise have difficulty affording the cost of attending the conference. How do I apply? Our priority will be to maximise the number of attendees we can assist. Consideration will be given to grant requests from outside Australia and New Zealand; however, due to the larger costs, we would have to balance each such application against the number of local delegates we could otherwise support. Delegates who need to be accompanied by a guardian or caregiver (e.g, minors or persons with special needs) should include these details in their grant request. Minors should include contact details for their parent or guardian and have them sign the application. Your application should: * Provide background information about your contribution to or involvement with the open source community * Explain what you hope to learn from the conference. * Show financial circumstances which would otherwise prevent you from attending the conference. * Provide details of what assistance you would require in order to attend. This doesn't need to be a detailed list -- "Flights to/from $HOMETOWN + accommodation" would be sufficient. * Be in OpenDocument format, plain text, HTML or PDF. Applicants will be selected on the following criteria: * Participation in FOSS projects -- art, hardware, software, documentation * Reason for attending linux.conf.au * Area of study * Voluntary or paid work in IT * Future plans/projects in mind * Membership of FOSS related groups eg. a LUG, Linux Australia, LinuxChix, a Hackerspace, Wikipedia, OWOOT etc. Email your application to RDP(a)lca2013.linux.org.au. Cheers, RDP team -- Kathy Reid @KathyReid on Twitter/Identi.ca/IRC etc 0418 130 636

Linux Australia AGM | Linux Australia Name Change | Rusty Wrench nominations open | Next Geelong meet
by Kathy Reid 19 Dec '12

19 Dec '12

Hi everyone, Hope your Christmas season isn't too busy... LINUX AUSTRALIA AGM, NAME CHANGE, ELECTIONS, RUSTY WRENCH NOMINATIONS Just forwarding on some information from the linux-aus mailing list (via Josh Hesketh) that may be of interest to Geelong Linux enthusiasts. Linux Australia is seeking community views on a name change. Also, notification here of AGM and Linux Australia Council elections. Also, nominations are open for the Rusty Wrench award for community contributions to open source. NEXT GEELONG MEET Thanks to Campbell for spurring discussion on our next Geelong meetup. How about we aim to make it the third Thursday of the month? Which would be Thursday 21 Feb (a lot of people are away in January). Is there a tutorial anyone would like to demonstrate / provide? NEXT LINUX USERS VICTORIA MEET Has not been posted on their website yet (http://luv.asn.au) however Daniel informs me that there is a BBQ planned for January, and that all Geelong Linux and opensource enthusiasts are invited. LUV are also after a new server, if you might have appropriate hardware, please see http://lists.luv.asn.au/pipermail/luv-announce/2012-December/000053.html Best wishes for Christmas and the new year, Kind regards, Kathy --- In this email: * Linux Australia AGM * 2013 Council Election * Linux Australia Name Change Vote * 2013 Rusty Wrench Award All of these are important, so please read this email carefully. == Linux Australia AGM == This is the official notification that the Linux Australia Annual General Meeting will be held in the week of January 28 - February 1 2013 at linux.conf.au 2013 in Canberra. We are yet to confirm the actual date, time and room and you will receive a more detailed notification once we have. == 2013 Council Election == Nominations for the council election are open athttps://www.linux.org.au/membership/index.php?page=view-election&id=19 - all current members are able to nominate and be nominated. The election timeline is as follows: Nominations: 13/12/2012 00:00 - 16/01/2013 00:00 Voting: 16/01/2013 00:00 - 30/01/2013 00:00 The results will be announced at the Linux Australia AGM. == Linux Australia Name Change Vote == Because you?ve all proposed a very large amount of possible new names for Linux Australia, we need a way to shorten that list somewhat. Before we can put the suggested new name(s) to a final vote, we need to verify through the NSW Department of Fair Trading that the name is available and that we?re allowed to register it. Additionally, we need to be able to get the associated domain name(s). Since we?re only legally allowed to request three names to be reserved, the long list needs to first be whittled down to three. We will do this in an online vote using our website. The vote will allow you to rank all suggested names in your order of preference. You do not need to rank proposed names that you don?t want to support and you are able to vote for ?Leave Linux Australia's name unchanged?, which is the final option in the list. All current members are able to participate in this vote. Once this first vote is done, if the winner is not ?Leave Linux Australia's name unchanged?, the council will attempt to reserve the top three names with the NSW Department of Fair Trading. We will then hold a second run-off vote between these top three names. This second vote will once again be optional preferential, meaning you can rank none, some or all of the suggested names in your order of preference. ?Leave Linux Australia's name unchanged? will once again be an option. If the result of the second vote is to change our name, the council will contact the NSW Department of Fair Trading and register the winning name as a Registered Business Name. We will then call a Special General Meeting to officially change the name of Linux Australia. It is a legal requirement that a minimum of 75% of voters need to vote in favour of a name change at the SGM in order for the motion to pass. Vote 1 of 3 is open now athttps://www.linux.org.au/membership/index.php?page=view-election&id=18 This first vote will remain open for two weeks until midnight (AEST) on December 27, 2012. == Rusty Wrench Award == Nominations for the Rusty Wrench Award (to be awarded at LCA2013) are now open. If you know of someone who deserves to be recognised for their efforts in helping our free and open source software community, please nominate them athttp://linux.org.au/vote/rusty-wrench-nomination-form Submissions close on December 27. -- Kathy Reid @KathyReid on Twitter/Identi.ca/IRC etc 0418 130 636

Thank you
by Kathy Reid 02 Dec '12

02 Dec '12

Hi everyone, Just a note of many thanks to our speakers Russell and Daniel for their efforts tonight, and for travelling so far to be with us. I'm sure you'll all agree it was a valuable and worthwhile session, and the general sentiment of the night was that we're keen to run more in the future. Just as a recap if you couldn't join us (poor George got vlined and metro'd :( ), Russell provided a very interesting overview of ZFS and BTRFS as alternative file systems, and Daniel went through a number of barriers to open source adoption in education, which sparked a group discussion on Microsoft licensing practices and how they are designed to limit FOSS adoption. Andrew Van Slageren rounded off the night with a show and tell of his Melbourne Wireless hardware, including a Nano bridge and Mikrotik router. Thanks all for your assistance in packing/cleaning up - very much appreciated. Again, it was fantastic to meet everyone face to face, and very much looking forward to future catchups. Kind regards, Kathy

Geelong Open Source Meet Thurs 29th November 6pm
by Kathy Reid 24 Nov '12

24 Nov '12

Hi everyone, There's been some interest in a Geelong group meeting face to face, which is fantastic. The lovely people at the Uni have been kind enough to give us a room (without charge yay!) for the evening, so you're all warmly invited to meet, catch up and share your favourite open source and Linux news, stories and opinions. Three people have confirmed so far (thanks for confirming) so if you're coming please let me know so that beer and pizza can be specced appropriately :-) Not being a beer drinker (blasphemy I hear you cry!), your recommendations are sought. Pizza preferences or unpreferences also sought. Unfortunately no-one's volunteered to present (yet), so if anyone would like to take the floor please just sing out. It's a nice presentation space, with VGA connectors, dual projectors etc. You're welcome to bring hardware or show and tell with you (like Raspberry Pis etc), soldering kit might be pushing it, but let's see how we go! WHERE Deakin University Waterfront Room AD5.004, Central Geelong WHEN Thursday 29th November 6pm (for a 6.30pm start) till around 8pm or until we're bored WHAT Beer and pizza. Let Kathy know if you have special requirements. Presentations (hopefully) or just meeting face to face. HOW TO GET THERE This Google Map best explains how to get there. November wrap of Linux and open sourcy stuff
by Kathy Reid 15 Nov '12

15 Nov '12

Hola amigos, Writing to you from Barcelona, Espana where I'm very lucky to be attending LinuxCon Europe. Blogging at http://blog.kathyreid.id.au and you can follow all the action via the #linuxcon hashtag. Have to say that Linus' keynote was a bit average but Catarina Mota's keynote rocked my world (she runs the Open Hardware Association). In other quick news, the next PHPMelb meet is 20th Nov; http://phpmelb.org/2012/11/08/20th-nov-osdclub-security-privacy-and-anonymi… ...and.... I'd really like to set up a face to face meet for this group on a Thursday night in Geelong - how does 29th November suit everyone say 6pm? I'll figure out a venue and some beer and pizza. Any offers for someone to give a presentation? Raspberry Pi? Mint vs Arch vs Ubuntu? Anyone? Kind regards, K.
