I'm a member of the AusTech Forums, wherein are found many kind and helpful people who never get irritated by halfwits like me. One of them told me about this Geelong group for Linux users so I made haste to sign up. I was once pretty computer-savvy, back in the days when my husband was alive and we each had a desktop loaded with Win XP. It was in the period of XP's successful life that Chic lost his; and I've had technical input from no-one since then. I've managed well with Win 7, but so loathed 8 that I never loaded it; and I've put up with 10 because - what else ? Turns out that Linux is the what else. I'm in the process of looking for a laptop to replace (eventually) this horrible Acer Aspire 5, which I hate. But as I'm on the age pension and have no assets at all, there are very finite limits to what I can afford. The folk at AusTech are helping me there, too. What I should like to do, in a perfect world, is talk to one or some of you to get more close input on the right distro - or at least, possibly the right one (as I'm told Mint cinnamon by one bloke and plain Debian by another, and so on). I'm trying to establish an open source hackathon program in Geelong, and I've got lots of development to do. Dear Colleagues, You're receiving this email as we've identified you as a key stakeholder in our bid to host linux.conf.au in Geelong in 2015, or have previously indicated to us that you'd like to be kept informed of developments here. *We're almost there* We are excited to share with you that the Linux Australia Council will shortly be reaching a decision about the host city for 2015. We expect the Council to have made a decision either on, or shortly after, October 22nd and we will be sure to share the outcome with you all as quickly as possible. It has been an exciting, eye opening process and we are very optimistic about our chances. Hopefully all of the hard work along with your support and encouragement will pay off and then the real work can begin. *What happens if we win?* * * If we are successful in securing linux.conf.au 2015 Geelong (LCA - By The Bay) we will begin putting into place our project plan (available here: http://goo.gl/M2sFi2) At this early stage we would be seeking interested individuals to join the core team to assist in preparing for and running the conference. Kate Chapman is the Executive Director of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team. The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) is an initiative of OpenStreetMap to apply the principles of open source and open data sharing towards humanitarian response and economic development. The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team believes that freely available, up-to-date geographic data can be vital in responding to a disaster. They help communities and responders to utilize the OpenStreetMap data, and encourage them to contribute and update the data. Over the past two years Kate has been primarily based in Indonesia where she has lead the AusAID funded HOT program. The program Scenario Development for Contingency Planning (SD4CP) is a joint initiative of the Indonesian and Australian governments through BNPB (Indonesian Disaster Management Agency) and AusAID that aims to teach disaster mangers how to develop realistic impact scenario for contingency planning. HOT teaches disaster mangers to spatially analysis the combination of scientific hazard model outputs with community knowledge through the open-source software InaSAFE (Indonesia Scenario Assessment For Emergencies). OpenStreetMap is one of the keys elements of this procedure, as it allows the disaster mangers to draw on community knowledge to identify important buildings such as schools and hospitals that potentially be impacted during a disaster. linux.conf.au 2015 Geelong Bid - Status update

Dear Colleagues, You're receiving this email as we've identified you as a key stakeholder in our bid to host linux.conf.au in Geelong in 2015, or have previously indicated to us that you'd like to be kept informed of developments here. *So, where are we at?* With incredible assistance from Mr Terry Hickey at Business Events Geelong - part of Geelong Otway Tourism, we now have indicative quotes from venues for conference events such as the Penguin Dinner, Professional Delegates' Networking Session and Speaker Dinner, and have a proposed conference date range (12-16th Jan 2015). Deakin University's Events area has been amazingly helpful - many thanks Luke O'Brien and team - and we have been able to put together a viable set of venues to cater for the different conference streams, including Costa Hall. Work is progressing on diversity aspects of the conference planning such as the Partners' Programme and childcare. Our budget for the event has gone through scenario modelling, and is with an experienced member of Linux Australia Council for review (many thanks Josh Hesketh and Josh Stewart for your efforts here). Financially we are looking solid, with an estimated budget of approximately $400k - which would be incredibly welcome in the Geelong economy given the recent contraction of major industry players such as Ford and Target in the region. The conference project plan has been drafted, and a work breakdown structure produced which will go through iterative refinement as planning progresses. These documents are publicly available on Google Docs and we're very happy to share - just let myself or David know and we'll send you the link. *The bottom line** * The bottom line is that we are finalising a substantive, genuine, well put together bid - which will be submitted by the Linux Australia deadline of 8th July. *What happens next?** * Word has it that there are several bids for linux.conf.au 2015 in the pipeline - including Auckland and Hobart. The Linux Australia Council will meet to consider all submitted bids after 6th July where they will make a shortlist of bids. Then, they will visit each shortlisted bid city over August and September to investigate the venues, accommodation and facilities and will make a final decision around October-November 2013. The winning bid will then be announced at linux.conf.au 2014 in Perth in early January. As a final word, I'd like to again thank you for all your support in encouraging David and I to make the bid - it's very much appreciated. Our next communication will likely be sometime after 6th July when we know whether the Geelong bid has made the shortlisting cut. Hello to all, Or should it be G'day Mate? New to the Linux world. I've decided to plunge into a Raspberry Pi. I've looked for Linux support/question forums and LUV & LUV-Geelong keeps popping up, but I don't see to be able to find a forum or something similar. The only info is email ??!! So I am. If this the correct method of getting support? Are there any preferred forums/groups to do searches for possible previous Linux newbie questions? My Linux question is that I have installed Transmission-daemon, and the log reports "another" version running. How do I "CLI" find what is running? How do I prevent Transmission-Daemon for starting at boot? (I have removed the added lines from init.d) Thanks Matt

The Australian Internet Governance Forum, curated by auDA, has been run for the last few years as an open, collaborative workshop promoting and facilitating discussion on the key topics driving the future of the internet. The 2013 event will be held in Melbourne on 16th-17th October. This year's topics include gTLDs, rights of children online, legal rights and cybercrime and several others. Linux Australia is proud to be working in partnership with auDA and intends to provide financial support (subject to Council approval) to the event, with the specific aim of assisting diversity of representation at the forum. The Forum is specifically looking for Ambassadors to lead discussions on areas of internet governance in which they are passionate, have an interest and in which they could convene a panel of subject matter experts to lead and contribute to debate and workshops. A small number of Ambassadors will be chosen to represent Australia at the global Internet Governance Forum in Bali later in the year. Doubtless this is a fantastic opportunity!
