Coincedence or scam.........

On the 4th of april I had a packaged dipatched from the UK order number #112460. Yesterday I received an email, address was to my mcmedia email account stating shipment number 2633 had been returned to the the FedEx office, "the reason incorrect deliver address, please print out invoice copy attached and collect the package at our office." The atttachment is an exe not a pdf or doc file. I will not normally run anthing sent to me un announced. Every other case something like this has occured one gets either a pdf or a doc file. My strong suspicion is this is a scam and the timing is just a coincidence..........a develish coincedence. Would it be worthwhile to contact the suppliers of my package. I have recieved other items in the past no problems. Lindsay

That has certainly given me a lot of ideas. Buying a ready made box would be good but I haven't found anything to match my specs yet will keep looking. Thank you for all the suggestions both of people to buy from and those to avoid. New SuSe 12.1

Hi All, I wanted to contribute an opinion of the new SuSe 12.1 (it has been out for a couple of months now), but before that, a bit of background. I have been a Mandrake/Mandriva user for many years and although I have trialled a few other distros (Red Hat, Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mint, Slackware, among them), I have always returned to Mandriva for its outstanding configuration of attached hardware. When doing the install, get everything you own attached and turned on and it will most likely be configured and be ready for use, when the install completes. This WAS my experience, it just worked. Considering that my Linux box was driving my business I could not afford to stuff around when I wanted to upgrade. I recently discovered the joys of mapping under Linux (QlandkarteGT) but Mandriva was way behind the dev cycle and I needed to be running later versions of QLGT. So I switched to SuSe 11.4, and in general it was OK, but the dev of QLGT also happened to be the package maintainer for it so the RPMs were fresh and slick. And I ran with that for quite a while. And then I thought, "I'll see how Mandriva is doing lately" and I downloaded my "paid for" power pack subscription DVD, and installed it with both KDE and gnome. I was really surprised, I have never seen anything so bad emerge from that brand before, so much was broken, including QLGT. It lasted 24 hours. Next night I installed the Gnome version of the Suse 12.1 release, and I cannot see myself returning to KDE again. It has a clever blend of conventional desktop with the "App" style of a tablet or smart phone. There is a small "Favourites" bar down the left side of the screen, and all of the windows in use are shrunk and presented in one view, if you want something different Clicking on "Applications will display the full set with subset options down the right hand side. When you get used to this, it is a very fast way to get around. I had some initial difficulty getting my two screens to work properly, just a learning curve. But hey!, I love this green piece of German engineering, 9.5/10 from me. Andrew Greig

Can anyone on the list give me any recommendations for online stores to buy computer parts or for that matter warnings of places to avoid. I am looking to build my first system since coming to this country and don't know any of the suppliers. I always used to use http://www.ebuyer.com when I was in the UK and am looking for something similar in Melbourne. Stripes.

jpeg file weirdness

Hello, I have an Apache server that serves a large static jpeg file. It originally came from a scanned photo. Most programs display this fine, including Firefox and Chromium that come with the latest Ubuntu. If I look at the file, I can't see any signs of missing regions or other corruption (not including spots from the original scanned image of course). Firefox under windows displays a message that the image cannot be displayed due to errors. Android 2.3.4 running on my Galaxy S2. says "An internal server error occurred. Please try again later." which is nonsense, as the apache log file says the server provided the file without errors. Programs like Gimp, gthumb, and display all seem to load the file ok. Unable to install Linux (Debian, Ubuntu and Mint) on to laptop

Ubunutu and Mint both fail when trying to modprobe hardware just after detecting the hard drives. Debian (using the NetInst 6.0.4 CD) gets in to the installer but can't detect either the GigE network card nor then Wifi card that are in my laptop. The GigE card is an Atheros AR8151 NIC. I've googled for suggestions, it appears that the 'atl1c' and/or 'atl1e' driver should do it, but the version of both included on the Debian install CD doesn't help the installer detect the NIC. I've not yet started on trying to figure out the WiFi card, as I was hoping to get the NIC working, install Linux and then build a custom kernel with the WiFi driver I need. The Debian NetInst CD runs kernel 2.6.32, but does offer me the option of installing modules off removable media. What I don't know is what files, file names, and the like I'd need to have on a USB memory stick to do that. And then I'd also need to actually get the required files. The Atheros NIC uses VENDOR ID: 1969 and DEVICE ID: 1083. I am tempted to install Virtualbox on to my laptop, install Linux in there, and then build a custom kernel with the correct drivers, but I would prefer to avoid that if possible. Can anyone assist me, by providing a link to the appropriate files, so that I can put them on to a USB memory stick and get Debian on to my laptop? Alternatively, advise on other Linux distro's installers which DO support the AR8151 would be appreciated. I would prefer to stick to the Debian family.
