I am having periodic ntp synchronisation problems.
ntp doesn't directly log anything - but I am using nagios3 to track
it's synchronisation and I periodically get problems - several times a
day. I can't figure out what is causing the loss of synchronisation.
Perhaps a burst of ntp packets dropped? But wouldn't ntp log something
about this?
Any suggestions on logging more info to find the cause or deeper
insights into what is going wrong would be appreciated.

Hello All,
I have a turntable with both analog and streaming USB outputs. It is one
from Jaycar. What audio packages do I need to be able to record the
streaming USB on Ubuntu and Debian? I have been looking, and there are
vague references in the comments about recording, but not specifically
stating that they can capture from USB.
There is a CD of Windows software, and I am hoping that I do not need to
enable something first from a Windows box. That is a SNAFU about which I
do not yet have information, but will be looking at. I am thinking along
the lines of some USB devices with the software distributed as files on
the storage side, but flippable into an "active" device mode, such as
some wireless "modems".

Hi,
I'm struggling to get the idmapd component of NFSv4 mounts on Linux
(Debian Squeeze) to work properly.
However, it's a different kind of problem to the common issue everyone
has with it on the internet, so Googling isn't getting me very far :(
idmapd is running on all servers concerned, and with the verbosity
turned up to the max, syslog indicates it seems to be getting called
with expected values.
It seems to be working on the surface, in that if you 'ls' in a
directory, it has correctly mapped the users and groups over to the
local ones, so they match up.
ie. if toby has uid=1000 on one server and uid=1001 on another, then
looking at the files on both servers will show the owner to be toby.
However, actually attempting to manipulate/access files or directories
fails with "Permission denied" errors.
If I fudge the uid on one server to use the uid that I know is actually
in use on the other server, then I can access the file.. but a "ls" will
show it to be owned by another user.
So in other words, reads seem to be using the idmapping, but writes seem
to be bypassing it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Toby
I've been running a Centos 6.2 system for two months now. I've been using XFS
for the /home file system since I had the impression it would be better for
large file systems by avoiding long fsck times. At the same time the nvidia
driver has proved to be buggy and has crashed the system several times.
XFS has the habit of zeroing out some files each time there is a crash. This
would be understandable for files that were being written around the time of
the crash. But I've had files be erased that were created hours before the
crash and were read-only after creation.
I've set some sysctl parameters down to 5 seconds to flush more frequenctly
fs.xfs.xfssyncd_centisecs = 500
fs.xfs.xfsbufd_centisecs = 100
fs.xfs.age_buffer_centisecs = 500
fs.xfs.filestream_centisecs = 500
(The file system is mounted with options "defaults, relatime")
You wouldn't expect files last modified more than 12 hours before the crash to
be erased but that is what has just happened this Friday evening.
Perhaps there is some care and feeding of XFS that I'm not doing? Should I be
using xfs_repair?
I expect I'll just switch to ext4.

Hello,
I have an Apache server that serves a large static jpeg file. It
originally came from a scanned photo.
Most programs display this fine, including Firefox and Chromium that
come with the latest Ubuntu. If I look at the file, I can't see any
signs of missing regions or other corruption (not including spots from
the original scanned image of course).
Firefox under windows displays a message that the image cannot be
displayed due to errors.
Android 2.3.4 running on my Galaxy S2. says "An internal server error
occurred. Please try again later." which is nonsense, as the apache
log file says the server provided the file without errors.
Programs like Gimp, gthumb, and display all seem to load the file ok.
Any ideas?

Hi all,
I have tried to get the installation process for each of the three
distros mentioned in the subject to install on to my Laptop.
Ubunutu and Mint both fail when trying to modprobe hardware just after
detecting the hard drives.
Debian (using the NetInst 6.0.4 CD) gets in to the installer but can't
detect either the GigE network card nor then Wifi card that are in my
laptop.
The GigE card is an Atheros AR8151 NIC. I've googled for suggestions,
it appears that the 'atl1c' and/or 'atl1e' driver should do it, but
the version of both included on the Debian install CD doesn't help the
installer detect the NIC.
I've not yet started on trying to figure out the WiFi card, as I was
hoping to get the NIC working, install Linux and then build a custom
kernel with the WiFi driver I need.
The Debian NetInst CD runs kernel 2.6.32, but does offer me the option
of installing modules off removable media.
What I don't know is what files, file names, and the like I'd need to
have on a USB memory stick to do that.
And then I'd also need to actually get the required files.
The Atheros NIC uses VENDOR ID: 1969 and DEVICE ID: 1083.
I am tempted to install Virtualbox on to my laptop, install Linux in
there, and then build a custom kernel with the correct drivers, but I
would prefer to avoid that if possible.
Can anyone assist me, by providing a link to the appropriate files, so
that I can put them on to a USB memory stick and get Debian on to my
laptop?
Alternatively, advise on other Linux distro's installers which DO
support the AR8151 would be appreciated. I would prefer to stick to
the Debian family.

Tim Lyth

Hi,
I have a pretty simple remote setup that I wanted to replace with a Harmony
650, as they were on special.
However I haven't been able to get it going, since I've been working off
many partial tutorials.
Wondering if anyone here has some advice.
I'm running XBMC Eden on Ubuntu Oneiric.
I have a similar desktop I'm testing this new remote on, with the goal of
switching it over on the actual HTPC once I have a working setup.
I have 3 receivers to choose from.
1) A $20 'mce compatible' remote I got from Dick Smith. It just sends
keyboard events, which work great right now with XBMC, no need for lirc.
2) A TwinHan receiver, as documented here:
http://www.doctort.org/adam/general/update-on-twinhan-remote-for-mythbuntu-…
I believe it's quite flakey. I did get it to work using lirc as
documented on that webpage, but it broke on an upgrade at one point, hence
replacing it with the system above.
3) A HP OVU400102, which I thought from reading was the most compatible
with the Harmony, and setup would be a piece of cake. It hasn't been.
As I said, I've found many 'partial' tutorials, mostly people posting on
XBMC forums with similar setups. I've run dpkg-reconfigure lirc more times
than I can count, hand edited hardware.conf too many times, laughed at:
lircd-0.9.0[8283]: you are using an obsolete devinput config file: Success
lircd-0.9.0[8283]: get the new version at
http://lirc.sourceforge.net/remotes/devinput/lircd.conf.devinput: Success
this a few times. Right now, I can't even get irw to spit out keycodes.
Has anyone been in a similar situation?
- What should I configure the Harmony device as? A generic MCE remote? The
reciever in question?
- How do I configure the reciever in lirc? Generic devinput? A specific
reciever?
And this is before I then get to trying to match up keycodes in XBMC to get
it all talking properly.
Any advice?
cheers,
/ Brett
