I'm interested in accessing files on a Mac OS machine over the network
from a Linux host.
They're both my laptops, and currently on the same network, but this is
not always the case (i.e., doing this over the Internet may be desirable
at some point).
I read a while ago that Apple was moving to SMB for file system access.
Is this what I should be looking at? Are secure authentication and
encryption supported? Or should I be considering sshfs or NFSv4, or
something else? There's no LDAP infrastructure in my home environment.
With thanks and regards,
Jason.
Hello to all,
Have a problem with a very old Dell XPS M1330. The box is 12 years old
(2008) and runs Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. It has only been used recently to
play frozen bubble as it has a very good keyboard.
The problem:
It does not pick the wifi. The switch on the side of the box doesn't seem
to be working.
I have checked the BIOS and both wifi and blue tooth seem to be turned on
there (ENABLED).
I tried iwconfig which listed the following interfaces and that nothing was
wifi capable
lo
eth1
vboxnet0
I tried
sudo ifconfig vboxnet0 up
and
sudo ifconfig vboxnet0 down
which show I can turn the vboxnet0 interface on and off. With it turned on
I again tried
iwconfig and still there are no wifi capable interfaces.
This happens with the Ubuntu that is on this box and with Mint 17 booted
from a USB key.
Any ideas? Is the wifi internal card dead? old system?
Thanks in advance,
Take care and be safe
J.

I just got given a HP ML 350 G6 server that I had hoped to use for LUV
training etc. It has 18G of RAM (9 DIMM slots used out of 18 total and the
only DIMM I could read was 2G), 2CPUs that each probably are in the 3000-5000
speed range according to https://www.cpubenchmark.net/ and 6*146G 15000rpm SAS
disks. It's a nice mid range server.
The problem is that it appears to have a broken power supply backplane (the
thing that connects to the hot-swap power supplies).
Does anyone know where to get a backplane cheap? I'm not paying $80 given the
possibility that whatever damaged the backplane damaged the rest of it in the
process. Does anyone have a similar HP system they want to use for swapping
parts or something?
Also as an aside I've got a box of 3.5" SAS disks.

Hi All.
I have used Meeting Requests in T-bird for some time but recently I have
had trouble with the Invitees dialogue. It used to be wholly contained
within around 50% of a screen width, but now it spreads across three
screens which is an irritation as I use only one screen. The info I need
to enter is on the very far left and the OK Button is on the far right.
Here is the link to my screenshots:

I have written to Mozilla to get a solution, but have had no reply.
Perhaps there is an easy solution to this. Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks

I'm running Einstein at home to search for pulsars and Asteroids at home to
determine the shapes of asteroids. While searching for pulsars is unlikely to
have any health effects, we could suffer the same fate as the dinosaurs so
research into asteroids is a really good thing.
Folding at home is a worthy project, but they probably have plenty of people
subscribing to it now. If you haven't setup Boinc before then Folding at home
is a reasonable choice for a first project. Make sure you monitor CPU
temperature if you want to have good performance for other things too.

Hi to all,
Now my university is closed for the duration of the health crisis, I have
to give at least 16 hours of tutorials / lectures a week via zoom. The
audience varies between 20 and 80 students. As my only internet
connections are:
1. is a dongle (with Vodafone) that has 3GB , and
2. my mobile phone with 60GB (also with Vodafone)
I am urgently in need of a much better connection.
Any advice on what and with whom? I am in rented accommodation in Macleod,
pretty much a mobile blackspot, and the landlord doesn't like the idea of
cable being brought to the premises.
Thanks
Joanna
