Hey all!
October is around the corner and it's time to plan for the main meeting.
One proposed idea is to pick *Ubuntu 20.10* as the main topic since it will
be released mid-October. We can have a short talk on what Ubuntu is for
beginners and more advanced talk on what's new in Ubuntu 20.10.
What do you think?
We can also do "*the latest news*" like we did last month and in December
last year. You can prepare for talking about a news item or simply reply on
this thread and we'll bring it up at the event.
*Lightning talks* are also very welcome. Lightning talks can be any of the
following:
- A topic you like to tell the community about
- A technical challenge you'd like to share with the community in case
someone has a hint or happy to help
- A hubby project you are working on, like a show and tell
- Announcing an event
If you have an idea for a lightning talk and not sure how to go about it,
feel free to contact the committee at <luv-ctte(a)luv.asn.au>
All suggestions on the format or content of the event is welcome.

I think I'm too late to arrange anything for this weekend. Should we have it
on Thursday next week or should we have it on a Saturday next month like the
previous schedule for Saturday meetings?

Hi to all,
I need to replace the internal battery of my Dell XPS 13 (9360). Could you
recommend reputable sellers? Details of the battery/performance attached.
Thank you

The Dell server is now online, we have heaps of compute power for BBB! Also
we should arrange some online training using VMs, gotta make use of the 72G of
RAM there (currently less than 16G is in use).
Andrew, the VM for the new version of BBB is now running so you can continue
doing whatever you want with that.
For reasons unknown to me the server doesn't like one of the SSDs. BTRFS
reports no errors, but I'll replace the SSD anyway. The SSD is a M.2 SATA
device in a M.2 to regular SATA converter and that might be what the PERC
doesn't like. Years ago I accidentally bought a M.2 SATA when I wanted a M.2
NVMe for a client and opened it before I realised my mistake.
I was going to send this to the committee, but I figured that others would be
interested.
The main LUV server is a VM in a DC in Germany. The new server has much less
bandwidth and less reliability (no redundant links or UPS) but low latency for
Melbourne. So it will work very well for video conferencing and for online
training.

Some years ago I ran a hands-on training session on BTRFS and ZFS using VMs.
Would there be interest if I ran that again online with BBB for video-
conferencing?
Stripes, this may interest you as it will give you the chance to try stuff out
on ZFS with no risk to your data. A large part of the exercise is
intentionally doing dangerous things and observing how ZFS recovers.

Hello,
I thought I had already raised this issue, but I can't see any emails.
So maybe mistaken.
But anyway, the problem is when I click on a pull down menu - any pull
down menu - in Firefox, it previously appears, but then disappears
immediately. e.g. right click on a web page (any web page). On click on
the one of the Firefox plugin menus. Or the Firefox menu.
Unlikely many of the reported similar problems restarting Firefox solves
the problem, and it doesn't appear to be a problem with my Profile. As
in I have completely rebuilt my profile from scratch several times, and
eventually the problem comes back.
Rather, I have found what triggers it appears to be clicking on a link
within notmuch inside emacs. The page loads OK. Then the very next menu
fails however.
It only happens if I open a page from emacs. If I manually run
"firefox-esr http://www.google.com/" or "xdg-open
http://www.google.com/" it works fine.
This has happened a while now on a range of different computers, running
different profiles, on different versions of Debian.
Just noticed running strace on the emacs process, the firefox invocation
is a bit more complex then I might have noticed. I don't see any URL
even on the command line. Wonder if there is something here that is
killing menus.
[pid 16180] execve("/usr/lib/firefox-esr/firefox-esr", ["/usr/lib/firefox-esr/firefox-esr", "-contentproc", "-childID", "13", "-isForBrowser", "-prefsLen", "7297", "-prefMapSize", "185946", "-parentBuildID", "20200720181548", "-greomni", "/usr/lib/firefox-esr/omni.ja", "-appomni", "/usr/lib/firefox-esr/browser/omni.ja", "-appdir", "/usr/lib/firefox-esr/browser", "11615", "true", "tab"], 0x7fe29880c900 /* 54 vars */) = 0

[Online event described will be at 9am Sunday AEST, Melbourne time.]
The first virtual meeting of CABAL, the LUG that normally meets in West
Menlo Park, California (which as a reminder is one of the relatively
sane parts of the USA).
Thanks again to Trent W. Buck for the cool timezone-dumping trick, which
he'll note I swiped.
There will be no special topic, though I might give a briefing about my
experience installing in a tearing hurry and administering Jitsi Meet on
Amazon EC2 to provide one of major functions of the recent World Science
Fiction Convention ('Worldcon') in Wellington, New Zealand, when it was
obliged to operate as the first-ever virtual Worldcon.

Hi ho! Seeing that the world is falling apart, the sky is the
colour of a dead television channel, and the air is barely breathable,
let's get together on Jitsi Meet!
CABAL Virual Edition: Saturday, Sept. 12, 2020, 4pm - 8pm Pacific
Daylight Time.[1]
Where? Here, via videoconferencing: http://meet.jit.si/cabal
You will need:
o Computer w/supported Web browser. Best results reported with:
o Chromium
o Chrome
o Microsoft Edge v. 79.0.309 or later
o (some others, e.g., Firefox, might work but are not guaranteed)
o A computer with mic and speakers/headphones. Headphones/earbuds
are recommended (because they avert audio feedback loops).
Upon joining @ that URL, your browser will probably ask if the page
may have permission to connect to your microphone and speaker. Say yes.
If you haven't done computer videoconferencing before:
o You can check your setup for problems at https://test.webrtc.org/ .
(Don't worry about minor bobbles like 'Reflexive connectivity'
getting dinged.)
o You might want to show up 15 minutes early, to thrash out problems.
(Problems are common during first-time videoconferencing.)
I will have fresh garlic bread and other home cooking. You probably won't,
unless you're in my household, but, hey, that's the year 2020 for you.
I expect we'll continue with 2nd Saturday 4-8 pm online CABAL meetings
for the duration of the Martian Death Flu.
When will reality get restored? Haha. "Der mentsh trakht un got lakht."
I will promise with extreme insincerity to give a prize to the farthest
flung videoconfercing participant. Astronauts calling from the ISS
will automatically win.
[1] If not in the Pacific Daylight Time time zone, check using
https://www.worldtimebuddy.com/ Or try something lik this Bourne shell
recipe (tested on Debian):
:r! grep worldclock .bashrc
alias worldclock='zdump America/{Los_Angeles,Mexico_City,New_York,Sao_Paulo} Europe/{London,Berlin,Moscow} Asia/Calcutta PRC Japan Australia/{Perth,Melbourne}'

I put a 1TB SATA disk in a Dell server with PERC RAID controller and
configured that disk as a single virtual disk (IE the disk gets a RAID
signature the PERC likes and is passed through to the OS). The disk when
viewed on a regular SATA controller has 1953525168 sectors, when it goes
through the PERC it has 1952448512 sectors, that is 525MB less space when
going through the PERC! That's 1% of a 500G SSD.
Is there any way to configure PERC to reduce it? Is using "HBA" mode
worthwhile?
