Brilliant, this works perfectly. Thanks, I'll use a cronjob to push all messages through every 5-10 minutes that should work well enough. -- Mike Fabre

Connecting linux laptop to eduStar networks
by Daniel Dalton 15 Mar '12

15 Mar '12

Hi, I'm attempting to connect my linux laptop to my government school's wifi network via wpa_supplicant. Firstly, I've been given some instructions for network-manager, which are as follows: open network manager (probably top right) and manually add a new wireless network use eduSTAR as the SSID Security: WPA & WPA2 enterprise - (WPA2) Authentication: TLS Identity: host/8808-DDLINUX.services.education.vic.gov.au user certificate: point to extracted folder: computers.crt CA Certificate: point to the extracted folder: cacert.pem Private key: point to the extracted folder: key.pem Password: password Next I've looked through some example wpasupplicant config files and also consulted man wpa_supplicant.conf And developed the following: network={ ssid="example wpa2-eap network" key_mgmt=WPA-EAP proto=WPA2 pairwise=CCMP group=CCMP eap=TLS identity="user(a)example.com" ca_cert="/etc/cert/ca.pem" client_cert="/etc/cert/user.pem" private_key="/etc/cert/user.prv" private_key_passwd="PKCS#12 passhrase" } Next I modify this file for my school's network according to the instructions I got at the top. network={ ssid="eduSTAR" key_mgmt=WPA-EAP proto=WPA2 # pairwise=CCMP # group=CCMP eap=TLS identity="host/8808-DDLINUX.services.education.vic.gov.au" ca_cert="/path/to/cacert.pem" client_cert="/path/to/computers.crt" private_key="/path/to/cacert.pem" private_key_passwd="password" } I'm suspecting this probably won't work though since it's usually the case:) So some questions: 1) HOw do I make this configuration file accurately reflect the configuration for this network, according to the instructions for network-manager? 2. Do I need those lines which I commented out in my final configuration file which has been modified to reflect the information my school provided me (my last paste) 3. The original "private_key" certificate in the raw instructions I got from the man page was a "prv" file. However, my school says to use the .pem file. Will this work? 4. The same is true for client_cert, the original config specifies a "pem" file while my school says to use the "crt" file. Which makes me a bit confused about what to do for 3 and 4. So does anyone have any ideas how to make this network configuration likely work? I haven't tested it yet, but I thought I'd try and get it as perfect as I could first before testing since I don't really know what I'm doing :) Thanks very much for any help. Dan

Delay emails
by Mike Fabre 14 Mar '12

Hi, I have a postfix & dovecot server set up, and I have been given the task of making it put a arbitrary 5-10 minute delay for every email that comes through, whether it be for sent mail or received mail doesn't matter. The first thing we thought of was to make all users use procmail, and set up a global procmail rule with a sleep in it, while this will almost certainly work, the users must not be able to run commands on the server, which they can do with a ~/.procmailrc file. I have tried to set up a postfix filter which would delay the mail (similar to this: http://pintant.cat/2010/04/14/how-to-delay-the-mails-postfix/) but that has an issue where it will only allow 5 of these filters to be running at a time, so if I where to send 10 messages with a 5 minute delay, the first 5 will take 5 minutes and the next 5 will take 10 minutes. I can change this limit within postfix but I would prefer to use a method that is more scalable. Anyone got any ideas? -- Mike Fabre

Ah sorry, Mailing list fail >.< I haven't got access to those files, oh and there is a proxy.pac file on the server. You'll be able to find the location of it by going in windows Network -> Connections -> settings and searching around for it. Otherwise you'll only get local access and access to ngv.vic.gov.au education department, and other govt. sites. I was able to connect to the network with internet after getting the proxy.pac file using a laptop and an ethernet connection. Sorry for the rushed mail, I'm very busy today =) Regards, luke On Sun, Mar 11, 2012 at 1:33 PM, Luke Martinez <me(a)luke.asia> wrote: > I'm watching this thread closely, is anyone able to provide me with the > computers.crt .pem and password files. error from ISP when fetcmail runs
by Lindsay Sprinter 08 Mar '12

08 Mar '12

The following errors occur when I run fetchmail, the errors are not serious ie fetchmail still works. The first started around 6 months ago, the expired one only a few weeks ago. The ISP has never sent anything stating they were changing or upgrading any security. As far as I know nothing has changed at this end for fetchmail. fetchmail: Server certificate verification error: self signed certificate fetchmail: Server certificate verification error: certificate has expired Lindsay

grub2 and serial console
by James Harper 08 Mar '12

08 Mar '12

I have a machine with a bios redirected serial port and after updating grub it now won't boot. The server runs the backups so it's important but users will still be able to do their jobs tomorrow if it's not working, but I'd still like to try and fix it remotely if I can. The serial port shows : GRUB loading. Welcome to GRUB! error: ELF header smaller than expected. Entering rescue mode... grub rescue> But it's redrawing the screen constantly so I can't enter any keystrokes. One theory I have is that in crashing, grub is just restarting itself over and over, but maybe someone else has another theory about it that might help? Thanks James

Apropos last night's talk

(Copypasta from FSF) Last Fall, Richard Stallman published an article[1] in which he states that, "for a computer user that values freedom", the most important question to be asking yourself about the Android operating system is: "[t]o what extent does Android respect the freedom of its users?" For help finding the answer to this question, the Free Software Foundation Europe has just the resource for you! Their new campaign, *Free Your Android*, delves into issues of freedom, privacy, and control as they relate to the various services, markets, and apps for Android. * <http://www.freeyourandroid.org> While there is only one distribution of Android that does not include some nonfree software -- Replicant [2] -- the site does provide helpful information, as well as cautionary warnings on other, nonfree distributions of Android. The purpose of the site is to eliminate proprietary software for Android and replace it with free software -- or, as they write: "Liberate your Android device: learn how to regain control of your data, with a free operating system and free apps!" Here at the FSF, many of us are fortunate enough to own phones that are able to run Replicant. But, we have put Replicant on our list of High Priority Reverse Engineering Projects[3] to encourage people to work on Replicant so it will be able to support more devices than just the HTC Dream and the Nexus One phones. Please support FSFE's campaign, and also stay tuned[4] for more news very soon about the FSF and GNU working in the area of mobile device freedom! centering mplayer
by Russell Coker 05 Mar '12

05 Mar '12

I want to play videos in the center of my screen. I don't want to run them full-screen because for some videos that takes too much CPU time and gets video and audio out of sync and for some other videos the resolution isn't high enough (anything scaled up by more than a factor of 2 looks bad). There are mplayer options for putting the window at a specific position, this would be fine if I had many videos with the same resolution. But I want to play arbitrary resolution videos in the center of the screen. Any ideas on how to do this? -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

For those whom think the NBN is not a good idea(tm) -- please read the following article. There are some arguments in the comments that debate the issues, but mostly many of them are "likely" from the un-informed or worse, those preferring to deny anything that might be positive from our current government.... GPG key signing request (second attempt)
by Peter Drake 04 Mar '12

04 Mar '12

Hi All I am trying to get my GPG key signed and I am wondering if anyone who will be attending the Tuesday meeting could do so. I need the key for my work due to a request from Red Hat for a signed key. If at all possible I would like someone that is part of the Red Hat circle of trust but someone from Debian's trust web would also be good. My email is peterrdrake(a)gmail.com or peter.drake(a)vu.edu.au and my GPG key details are below gpg: key 32B68545: "Peter (This is my 4096 RHCX gpg key) < peter.drake(a)vu.edu.au>" Cheers Peter Drake
