MySQL question
by Russell Coker 08 May '12

SELECT type, email FROM lists, aliases WHERE lists.uid='user(a)example.com'; SELECT type, email FROM lists, aliases WHERE aliases.alias='user(a)example.com' and lists.uid=aliases.uid; The above MySQL queries return results almost instantly. The below query takes ages but it should just give the union of the results of both the above queries. How can I get the result of the above two queries with a single query that doesn't take ages? I guess that the problem is that it's looking up the aliases table for every row in the lists table. How can I stop it doing that? SELECT type, email FROM lists, aliases WHERE (lists.uid = 'user(a)example.com' or (lists.uid=aliases.uid and aliases.alias='user(a)example.com')); -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

Word/Excel 2 view in Web App, Libre/OpenOffice or others
by Peter Ross 07 May '12

Hi, I am writing a PHP Web application and look for a way to convert and show documents (esp. Word and Excel, old and new format) I found a Open/LibreOffice converter service: http://zawmn83.wordpress.com/2008/08/12/php-convert-microsoft-word-doc-docx… I would like to restrict the LibreOffice to this tool only. I glanced over the Makefile but could not make sense of many options. Did someone achieve this before? Or are there other ways? Thanks for ideas Peter

Arduino
by Russell Coker 07 May '12

avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00 I'm getting the above error when I try to upload code to an Arduino Uno clone (DFRduino) from the "arduino" program on Debian/Unstable. Any suggestions on what I should do to try and fix this? Google searching suggests that the error in question can mean that the wrong board type is in use, I don't think that's the case and I tried using other board types with no success. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

I don't suppose anyone has ported arc_summary and zilstat to read the linux spl structures? http://constantin.glez.de/blog/2011/02/frequently-asked-questions-about-fla… I suspect I'd benefit greatly from l2arc in my usage (not so much zil). But I don't wanna go out and buy this yet, until I *know* it will help improve upon the 40iops I currently suffer from :) http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/69269 -- Tim Connors

shop open on Sunday in Vic
by Russell Coker 05 May '12

05 May '12

A project I'm working on needs the below part tomorrow. Do you know of a shop in or near Melbourne that would sell one on a Sunday? Thanks. Replacement: DEV-10009. The new version does not have the 6-pin header. This page is for reference only. Description: This is a basic breakout board for the FTDI FT232RL USB to serial IC. The pinout of this board matches the FTDI cable to work with official Arduino and cloned 3.3V Arduino boards. It can also be used for general serial applications. The major difference with this board is that it brings out the DTR pin as opposed to the RTS pin of the FTDI cable. The DTR pin allows an Arduino target to auto-reset when a new Sketch is downloaded. This is a really nice feature to have and allows a sketch to be downloaded without having to hit the reset button. This board will auto reset any Arduino board that has the reset pin brought out to a 6-pin connector. The pins labeled BLK and GRN correspond to the colored wires on the FTDI cable. The black wire on the FTDI cable is GND, green is DTR. Use these BLK and GRN pins to align the FTDI basic board with your Arduino target. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

Bash quoting oddness
by Chris Samuel 04 May '12

04 May '12

Hi folks, I'm banging my head against how to properly pass a list of arguments in a variable through to a command in bash where the list of arguments itself has quoted values in it. Here's a test case script: $ cat odd-quoting.sh #!/bin/bash a='--debug --make-maker=--make-maker="INSTALLDIRS=vendor INSTALLMAN1DIR=none INSTALLMAN3DIR=none" --no-sign' echo cpan2rpm $a If I run that script with dash on Ubuntu it looks fine: $ sh -x odd-quoting.sh + a=--debug --make-maker=--make-maker="INSTALLDIRS=vendor INSTALLMAN1DIR=none INSTALLMAN3DIR=none" --no-sign + echo cpan2rpm --debug --make-maker=--make-maker="INSTALLDIRS=vendor INSTALLMAN1DIR=none INSTALLMAN3DIR=none" --no-sign [...] But if I run it with bash on either Ubuntu or my actual target, RHEL6, it gets it wrong: $ bash -x odd-quoting.sh + a='--debug --make-maker=--make-maker="INSTALLDIRS=vendor INSTALLMAN1DIR=none INSTALLMAN3DIR=none" --no-sign' + echo cpan2rpm --debug '--make-maker=--make-maker="INSTALLDIRS=vendor' INSTALLMAN1DIR=none 'INSTALLMAN3DIR=none"' --no-sign [...] I get the same problem if I run bash from its /bin/sh symlink on RHEL6. Any ideas what I'm missing here ? cheers, Chris -- Chris Samuel : http://www.csamuel.org/ : Melbourne, VIC

I have searched many tables manually but no luck. Is there a mysql command to find the contents of a field containing a specific word somewhere in the database? Apologies for OT Roger

gvfs mount vs mount.cifs
by Colin Fee 28 Apr '12

28 Apr '12

On my work notebook running LMDE with cinnamon I can use nautilus to "connect to server", in this case my 'home' share on the Monash windows AD service. The connection I get gives me all pertinent file system rights and appears in the .gvfs folder in my home folder with the expected rights as well. However if I issue a direct mount.cifs command thus: ~$ sudo mount.cifs //ad.monash.edu/home/my-server-name/colinfee/home/colinfee/ad-home -ocredentials=/home/colinfee/.smb/ad-credentials It mounts but with the /home/colinfee/ad-home and subfolders etc owned by root. Varying the mount command thus makes no difference ~$ sudo mount.cifs //ad.monash.edu/home/my-server-name/colinfee/home/colinfee/ad-home -ocredentials=/home/colinfee/.smb/ad-credentials,uid=colinfee,gid=colinfee,setuids ~$ ls -ald ad-home drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 0 Apr 16 16:42 ad-home/ I've also tried the forceuid/gid options too. I can use file_mode=0777 and dir_mode=077 to override the issue but it seems like cheating. Is what I'm seeing an artefact of my local LMDE system or the remote Windows AD share? As it works via the nautilus fuse method, why not mount? Ultimately what I'm trying to do is mount the share and use rsync to sync my local files to the server. -- Colin Fee tfeccles(a)gmail.com
