Hi all, I have a comprehensive listing of my plugins below, but Adobe says I have this installed You have version 11,5,31,137 installed (Chrome works OK) Firefox says I have the latest version installed File: libtotem-vegas-plugin.so Version: Shockwave Flash 11.1 r102 so I am confused as to why I cannot watch Flash Videos under Firefox. I would be really grateful for some light on this. Andrew Greig Firefox plugins Enabled plugins Find more information about browser plugins at mozilla.org. training
by Russell Coker 16 Jan '13

16 Jan '13

It seems that we may have access to hardware for running training on Xen. At this stage it's not certain whether we get hardware and whether we get hosting. But it's a possibility and the outcome of this discussion may change the probability of it happening. A good time for this might be the beginner's SIG, not because training would be just for beginners, but because it's a good way of getting net access. If that isn't a good option then we could do it at some other time and place. I have enough unused quota on my 3G Internet connection for this that I can share via Wifi and apart from long ping times 3G net access is quite good for such things (ssh requires little bandwidth). I'm thinking of running training on some of the basic Internet protocols. DNS (including dynamic updates), SMTP (including SMTP-auth, IMAP, and maybe SQL authentication), DKIM, HTTP (maybe setting up something like Wordpress or MediaWiki), and whatever gets interest. If this idea takes off then probably other people would offer various training. Ideally all the virtual servers would have public IP addresses so anyone who wishes could go home and keep working on it - and discuss it on this list. Also we can use real world DNS etc so things can work the way they really work. When you setup a mail server you can send mail to gmail etc for testing. Note that we haven't necessarily got the hardware or a place to run it. So at this time there's no guarantee that it will happen. I can probably get hosting with plenty of IPv4 addresses but it will have limited bandwidth - but enough for 30 DomUs if everyone plays nicely. Also I haven't discussed this with the LUV committee, I'm raising it here first because if there isn't interest then we can skip the committee discussion. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

LUV hardware library
by Russell Coker 16 Jan '13

16 Jan '13

Firstly should I bring it to the BBQ? Next we need more stuff. The absolute best thing for the hardware library is RAM. This is because adding RAM is a really quick and easy way of making an old system usable again and also because RAM is small and light. ECC RAM for servers would be good too, but please label it really clearly (otherwise it will be mistaken for broken non-ECC RAM and discarded). The minimum speed of RAM that's useful would be DDR-333 AKA PC-2700 and the minimum size is 512M DIMMs, adding small DIMMs isn't a good option because motherboards don't have enough sockets. RAM that is DDR2-533 AKA PC2-4200 or faster is extremely useful, there's a heap of old Core2 Duo and Pentium-D systems out there that can be useful again with some of that. Laptop RAM is REALLY useful, not only because of old laptops needing an upgrade but because printers often take laptop RAM. PCIe expansion cards would be good. PCIe has been out for long enough that surely someone has some old stuff that they don't use. A collection of spare PCIe video cards would be handy and PCIe Ethernet cards would be really good. USB flash storage sticks are also useful and small. If you have some 32M and 64M sticks that you don't use then please donate them (after securely erasing them). One use for those is for MP3 files for car music systems which often don't have a suitable UI for changing albums other than removing one USB stick and inserting another. The Kia Cerato is one vehicle that really benefits from such use. SATA disks are useful. Probably a couple of 40G disks for systems that don't need much storage would be handy to have and some disks >100G for more serious use. As 3TiB disks are cheap nowadays there should be some unused 300G disks out there. SAS disks are really useful as some servers don't work properly with SATA disks. Even small disks can be good, a pair of 36G SAS disks can make for a really useful server. Note that I won't be bringing a lot of disks to meetings. So anyone who wants disks should email me a day or two before the meeting with a request. The same goes for DVD drives. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

Yep, another small ISP I've heard of, Smelly Black Dog, offers native IPv6 on their ADSL services. Looks like they only offer a /64 but that should get you by. (At the moment where I work, I'm doing dynamic /56's, and will do static /56's once I teach our customer database to speak IPv6.)

Good practice or not, I'd say very few (this list would be an unrepresentative sample, skewing estimates very much higher than reality). Segmented networks can be a pain for non technical users with today's plug and play (pray?) devices which expect to find each other on the same LAN segment. 73 de VK3JED / VK3IRL http://vkradio.com

Yep, cloned VMs can certainly cause duplicate MAC addresses on their virtual Ethernet interfaces. Haven't had that issue, because I run VMware, and it is good at detecting when you've moved or copied a VM, and recommends you to say "I copied this VM" if you're not sure. I was debugging the MAC address issue over 10 years ago on a mostly Windows network. We had some IP, as well as Novell IPX/SPX, and a couple of Linux boxes, mostly (all?) in the DMZ, which wouldn't have helped with the troubleshooting. I had to logically deduce what was going on, and duplicate MAC addresses ended up being the only logical possibility (which was proved), after checking that the (Windows) DHCP server was working correctly and ruling out other possibilities. 73 de VK3JED / VK3IRL http://vkradio.com

Shouldn't be, but I have seen duplicate MAC addresses in the real world. It was only through detailed troubleshooting of some weird network issues that I discovered this. :) >This article discusses some of the merits of the 64 bit subnet >address - http://etherealmind.com/allocating-64-wasteful-ipv6-not/. >I almost stopped reading when I read that "IPv6 addresses are 296 >times more numerous than IPv4 addresses" until I realised that they meant 2^96. > >A lot of these arguments end in the circular statement that "subnets >are 64 bits because SLAAC is 64 bits", so I'm yet to be convinced. Agree, the reasoning is very circular. I'm not convinced either, and I'm sure usage changes down the track will see changes in addressing and routing policies, just as happened with IPv4 over the years. 73 de VK3JED / VK3IRL http://vkradio.com

I purchased sometime back a pair of OCZ 128g Vertex 4 drives under a recommendation from a salesman of long aquantence. While once installed the drive works OK, the first drive installed did some __EXTREMELY__ strange stuff on start up. Effectively delaying the boot up by minutes. Had to switch the system off twice to get it working. So the second drive has been dumped so if anyone wants it to play with you are quite welcome to it. I have since gone with IBM SSD drives although Samsung are getting some good writeups one review saying they actual make there own SSD chips unlike allmost every one else. Lindsay
