training

It seems that we may have access to hardware for running training on Xen. At this stage it's not certain whether we get hardware and whether we get hosting. But it's a possibility and the outcome of this discussion may change the probability of it happening. A good time for this might be the beginner's SIG, not because training would be just for beginners, but because it's a good way of getting net access. If that isn't a good option then we could do it at some other time and place. I have enough unused quota on my 3G Internet connection for this that I can share via Wifi and apart from long ping times 3G net access is quite good for such things (ssh requires little bandwidth). I'm thinking of running training on some of the basic Internet protocols. DNS (including dynamic updates), SMTP (including SMTP-auth, IMAP, and maybe SQL authentication), DKIM, HTTP (maybe setting up something like Wordpress or MediaWiki), and whatever gets interest. If this idea takes off then probably other people would offer various training. Ideally all the virtual servers would have public IP addresses so anyone who wishes could go home and keep working on it - and discuss it on this list. Also we can use real world DNS etc so things can work the way they really work. When you setup a mail server you can send mail to gmail etc for testing. Note that we haven't necessarily got the hardware or a place to run it. So at this time there's no guarantee that it will happen. I can probably get hosting with plenty of IPv4 addresses but it will have limited bandwidth - but enough for 30 DomUs if everyone plays nicely. Firstly should I bring it to the BBQ? Next we need more stuff. The absolute best thing for the hardware library is RAM. This is because adding RAM is a really quick and easy way of making an old system usable again and also because RAM is small and light. ECC RAM for servers would be good too, but please label it really clearly (otherwise it will be mistaken for broken non-ECC RAM and discarded). The minimum speed of RAM that's useful would be DDR-333 AKA PC-2700 and the minimum size is 512M DIMMs, adding small DIMMs isn't a good option because motherboards don't have enough sockets. RAM that is DDR2-533 AKA PC2-4200 or faster is extremely useful, there's a heap of old Core2 Duo and Pentium-D systems out there that can be useful again with some of that. Laptop RAM is REALLY useful, not only because of old laptops needing an upgrade but because printers often take laptop RAM. PCIe expansion cards would be good. PCIe has been out for long enough that surely someone has some old stuff that they don't use. A collection of spare PCIe video cards would be handy and PCIe Ethernet cards would be really good. USB flash storage sticks are also useful and small. If you have some 32M and 64M sticks that you don't use then please donate them (after securely erasing them). One use for those is for MP3 files for car music systems which often don't have a suitable UI for changing albums other than removing one USB stick and inserting another. The Kia Cerato is one vehicle that really benefits from such use. SATA disks are useful. Probably a couple of 40G disks for systems that don't need much storage would be handy to have and some disks >100G for more serious use. As 3TiB disks are cheap nowadays there should be some unused 300G disks out there. SAS disks are really useful as some servers don't work properly with SATA disks. Even small disks can be good, a pair of 36G SAS disks can make for a really useful server. Note that I won't be bringing a lot of disks to meetings. So anyone who wants disks should email me a day or two before the meeting with a request. Yep, another small ISP I've heard of, Smelly Black Dog, offers native IPv6 on their ADSL services. Looks like they only offer a /64 but that should get you by. (At the moment where I work, I'm doing dynamic /56's, and will do static /56's once I teach our customer database to speak IPv6.)

Good practice or not, I'd say very few (this list would be an unrepresentative sample, skewing estimates very much higher than reality). Haven't had that issue, because I run VMware, and it is good at detecting when you've moved or copied a VM, and recommends you to say "I copied this VM" if you're not sure. I was debugging the MAC address issue over 10 years ago on a mostly Windows network. We had some IP, as well as Novell IPX/SPX, and a couple of Linux boxes, mostly (all?) in the DMZ, which wouldn't have helped with the troubleshooting. Yep, would have thought someone other than Internode would be offering IPv6 by now. Internode IPv6 is rock solid. Only times I notice IPv6 is either if I can be bothered checking what IP I'm connecting to, or when something screwy happens. Had a good one last week. Several people complained a site wasn't working, but I never had any issues. Turned out the site was IPv6 capable, but there was a DNS screwup with the IPv4 RRs, so only IPv4 users were affected, and I had no issues. :-D > > 2. If my server was part of a money making concern, I'd go this route, but it isn't. At this stage, SixXS via New Caledonia looks like the best of a bad lot for me. :) Latency isn't too severe (35-40 mS from Adelaide and 50 ish mS from my DSL connection here), and their PoP is lightly loaded (6 tunnels, 1 routed subnet). 73 de VK3JED / VK3IRL http://vkradio.com
