Changing permissions for an external hard drive

Hello, I was trying to backup some data from a Ubuntu 12.04 linux installation when all of a sudden the external hard drive I was using (My Passport 300Gb) changed to read only.I have spent about 2 hours trying to set the permission back to read write without success.For example I have tried the following command sudo chmod 755 "/media/My Passport" and sudo chmod 777 "/media/My Passport" the message given both times was chmod: changing permissions of `/media/My Passport': Read-only file system I'd also like to mention that I do not recommend Ubuntu 12.04 to anyone as it has far too many bugs to be usable.Linux Mint is much better for example. I hope someone can help me to get my external drive back to read write mode. regards Peter

hi I need some help with this simple bash script, I ran the script twice, the first time it failed on some bash arithmetic, I then ran it again without changing anything and it worked, so I slightly puzzled as lines 8&11 are the same and sometimes it evaluates it and sometimes not. Thanks for the reply. This was what I figured may be the case. The problem is that they [the recipient] deny the presence of any log entries showing rejection from our address. I know the DNS entries are correct, I can send to the address from a number of remote emailers, but it will just not accept [or, apparently even acknowledge the existence of] our messages. They say that they have opened all possible channels for our emails - these are vital commercial negotiations, and so I believe them here - but we still cannot get through. Are there any settings I can make in OUR dns records or IP settings that may correct the problem? Are there other tools that I can use to obtain a better diagnosis? Hi Duncan I thought that may have been the case but any online checking I did came back negative. There is also the fact that this is a single domain that we cannot email to, there are no other bounces or fail to connects. The sending domain is roadgear.com.au just in case you can find any positive tests that I have missed! The owners of the offending domain say that they have opened all of their firewall and anti spam blocks to allow our email address but that they cannot even see connection attempts hitting their servers. I have tried using the sending domain address in headers sent from another machine [not on the same domain] and have connected successfully. I have sent from the genuine domain to two different addresses and had one receipt and one failure and so I am confident that the sending machine is connecting successfully to at least part of the internet. email delivery problem

I have been asked to investigate a problem with undeliverable emails. The problem is that email to a particular domain is not being sent but all other emails from the same server are apparently working correctly. The administrator of the receiving domain insists that our server is not handing the mail off correctly to the internet. Our set-up consists of a windows network using a windows 2003 server domain with a gateway server running Fedora 9 and using Sendmail 8.14.12. Both servers are due for replacement in the near future. Mail transport from Outlook on the windows network appears to have no problem using the mail server, only in the case of this one particular domain does delivery fail. I have tried sending an email to the "undeliverable" domain and cc'ing it to another external address. The message failed on one address but succeeded immediately on the other. hi local network has a few machines on it address 192.168.1.9 through 192.168.1.15 all connected over via cable behind a router on 192.168.1.14 (as i3-530) my usual desktop (Fedora-16 with KDE) with firefox running (vsn 10.0) open a konsole window I start a connection to 192.168.15 (D805) a storage box (CentOS 5.7 with KDE) with the command "ssh -Y 192.168.1.15" reply with password check location with "uname -r ; /sbin/ifconfig" give the command /usr/bin/firefox (vsn 3.6.10) and a firefox session starts with the firefox from the local box not the remote. running konqueror, kate and kwrite gives the remote versions on the local box. So what is going on ? Steve

Accounting software for linux

Hello, I am would like to know what the best accounting software is for a business that has to deal with GST.Or at least some of the best ones.I don't mind paying for it if it's worth it.I am using GNU cash at the moment but wonder if there is something better.Also I need something very easy to understand as I have not studied accounting.I would prefer to hear from people that have actually used the software for a business for a number of years.Thanks.Sorry I won't give out more details about what I am doing for privacy reasons. regards Peter

where does Ubuntu software centre store its packages?

Hello, I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 and have been trying to get the GnuCash package onto CD.I tried APTonCD but couldn't find the relevant package with it.I assume its just a matter of finding the package on my hard drive if it even exists.GnuCash is definitely installed.I tried googling for about 15 minutes and also the inbuilt Ubuntu help which is not working properly for me. regards Peter

Installing a Lexmark X1195 printer on Ubuntu

Hello, I have been trying to get the above printer working with Ubuntu 11.04.Firstly I don't really know what I am doing and have spent an hour or two on it already.I tried adding the printer via the usual user friendly way however there is no printer driver listed for that model.I looked at some information on the Ubuntu forums which led me to the Gentoo Wiki Archives.I tried a few scripts from those sources but they didn't work for me.Does anyone know how to get the above printer to work with Ubuntu? regards Peter
