Hi Chris, Thanks for your update. This is great! This means with the newer distros nowadays, we can basically treat SSD no different from conventional hard disks - when come to disk partitioning or formatting. I remember 2-3 years ago when I was installing Ubuntu onto my 2nd generation eeepc with SSD, I got instructions at the time to skip the swap space all together. Can I assume that with new distros on SSD - swap space is back in again? How about the "reserve 7% for overprovisioning" suggestion? Do you think it is still valid now? Anyway, the focus for Justin at the moment is to get his SSD to install Ubuntu 14.04 without error. linux noob - install problems, installfests?

Hi all, Total linux noob here trying and failing to install ubuntu 14.04. I would love to know if there is an installfest planned sometime soon so i can finally get the OS installed. if not i would be super grateful for any help. i posted my issue on askubuntu.com but not got any helpful responses yet, here is the link: https://askubuntu.com/questions/626934/cannot-install-ubuntu-14-04-on-new-s… basically i keep getting the "the ext4 file system creation in partition #1 (0,0,0)(sdd) failed" message when trying to install onto a brand new SSD. when i try to format and partition manually i get the "Error synchronizing after initial wipe: Timed out waiting for object (udisks-error-quark, 0)" message. If anyone can give me some pointers, i would really really appreciate it. thanks! Justin

hi the file is about 500MB, the source is local disk and the sink is a NFS mounted drive connected over 1Gb/s ethernet. The copy starts with a burst at 20MB/s then slows to less than 100kB/s. So the real time should have been about 30s not 13m30 ------------------------------------- $ time cp video.mp4 /media/audio/video/other/Salamander/video.mp4 real 13m30.489s user 0m0.004s sys 0m0.860s ------------------------------------- There are no entries in /var/log/messages on the sink server (Centos 6.6) and only many of these on the source machine (Fedora 20) Nov 12 11:35:42 hvamm systemd-udevd: failed to execute '/usr/lib/udev/socket:@/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event' 'socket:@/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event': No such file or directory. smart test on the drive shows no errors and hours=5330 (222 days), drive is 1TB Seagate where next to look

Hi all, am having an issue at startup. I get a notice saying "the disk drive for /media/datas is not ready yet or not present continue to wait or press s to skip mounting or m for manual recovery" nothing happens if i wait i have to press s. boot problems...Yay!

"This is all very good, the more mistakes I make the more I learn" he repeated to himself over and over again like wild eyed crazy man pacing up and down the lost halls of a forgotten mental asylum. For a while there I had something working. It was really cool, I was happy and free, my hair flowing behind me blown up by the magical breeze emanating from the cooling fan of my computer tower. I'd managed to dual boot Kali Linux along side Windows. The problem I had was that I was not able to get the two screens working as a single display. That is to say I was seeing double. I read the instructions on this page http://docs.kali.org/general-use/install-nvidia-drivers-on-kali-linux in an attempt to solve that problem. I knew it was a graphics card driver problem because when I went to the 'displays' section of the system settings the display showed as unknown and only showed one rather than two. After following the instructions to reboot I now get [...] Waiting for /dev to be fully populated...udevd[512]: specified group 'pcscd' unknown during the boot into Kali-Linux. And that's where the computer stays. Any ideas? Scott.
