So it seems the best way of getting Raid1, for the purpose of protecting your data if one hard disk fails, is to use Software Raid, and then put bttrfs on top? Is this correct? Is it ok to run bttrfs in a VM using virtualized disk? I have heard people say you shouldn't do this, because there is no guarantee that data has been written to physical disk when requested by the VM. Is this correct? Overly paranoid?

systemd btrfs timeout

Hello, I seem to get intermittent systemd time out errors when trying to mount btrfs, which throws the system into systemd rescue mode. e.g. "Job dev-sdb1.device/start timed out." I can't actually see any reason for the problems in the systemd journal. Furthermore, "mount -a" from rescue mode works perfectly. Maybe the hard disks just aren't "waking up" fast enough in the boot sequence. I have reported slowness here before when system is cold, which I suspect is hard disk related (spinning WD disks). Hmm. It is now booting fine again, maybe I need to leave the hard disks on for a while before they start working properly... smartctl reports nothing abnormal. Any ideas? Maybe time to get new hard disks? Thanks

Timeline

Hi All, Recently I've been using a little python program called Timeline on my Ubuntu 15.04 system. Today, however, it stopped working and now gives me the following error when I try to launch if from the command line. (timeline.py:10359): Gdk-CRITICAL **: _gdk_pixmap_new: assertion '(width != 0) && (height != 0)' failed (timeline.py:10359): Gdk-CRITICAL **: IA__gdk_cairo_create: assertion 'GDK_IS_DRAWABLE (drawable)' failed Segmentation fault (core dumped) As Timeline relies on wx widgets (python-wxgtk2.8 on Ubuntu) and associated libraries to run I thought there might be a problem with the package though a purge and reinstall of these has not fixed the issue. I redownloaded the source in case something in the local install had changed, still no joy. A look through other recent updates show no other obvious candidates that could have caused the breakage. I've also spun up a lubuntu 15.04 live session where Timeline ran without issue. Any idea where to look next? Tim Ps As Sourceforge is (partly) down, so is the Timeline mailing list and homepage. wifi authentication by certificate

Hi All I am trying to connect my tablet running mageia 5 to the wifi in my local secondary school. When I was an employee it was quite easy to do this using wpa2 enterprise with a username and password. However I am now a casual and so don't have that any more. The school tech has provided me with a root certificate and a machine certificate which is how the school owned windows netbooks are connected. Does anyone have any idea how to use the certificates? My searching has only found certificates paired with username and password. Cheers Nic

Many thanks for the replies, James reply put me on the track, vnstat just reads /proc/net/dev this give full stats for all up interfaces. All I need to do is when ppp0 comes up is to start reading /proc/net/dev and feed it to grep ppp0, extracting the transmit and recieve count will be trivial. Flamming horrible weather must be making my brain freeze. Up here in NE Vic we normall get frost mornings and sunny days. We have had lots of cloudy days either drizzle (mostly) or rain top temperatures of between 7 and 10 degrees. To cold to do anything outside particularly in the machine shop. My fitness program has gone completely to the dogs.........sigh...... Lindsay

On the poll on the LUV web site they have missed out the best window manager ever programmed. A lot of people regard it as old hat, this is largely to do with its standard config has not changed in around 10 years, so it looks something from the dark ages. I am talking about FVWM of course, its ____THE____ most flexible WM to config there is, there is almost nothing you cannot do in it as long as you are willing to dive into the config files, and this does apply to making it look top class . Its very flexibilty though makes it a challenge to config, but in the end its the ___ONLY__ window manager that one can change to suit you. Nearly every other one forces something down ones throat. Note FVWM does provide tools that help one experiment with the config. I am not trying to sell FVWM to anybody just mentioning a program I cannot get on without. Uisng linux for 21 years, Lindsay

Recording and displaying total internet traffic.

Now I have 3G radio broadband, this is fast but its also expensive. I wish to be able to show the total amount of data thats travelled both ways on a particular interface, eg eth1 or ppp0. The idea being I can easily see how much data/dollars I have used to allow me to manage my internet usage better. It would not be chronically difficult to write a script to be run with poff that displayed total traffic as displayed by ifconfig. I wonder if there already is a way around this. Lindsay

mysql emulation layer for postgres

Is there any project to build a mysql emulation layer for postgres? All my searches come up with the April1 post from a few years ago. Would anyone else find such a thing useful? I have a few servers where I'm running mysql only because the application I am using demands it (wordpress, mainly). Thanks James
