The Dell server is now online, we have heaps of compute power for BBB! Also we should arrange some online training using VMs, gotta make use of the 72G of RAM there (currently less than 16G is in use). Andrew, the VM for the new version of BBB is now running so you can continue doing whatever you want with that. For reasons unknown to me the server doesn't like one of the SSDs. BTRFS reports no errors, but I'll replace the SSD anyway. The SSD is a M.2 SATA device in a M.2 to regular SATA converter and that might be what the PERC doesn't like. Years ago I accidentally bought a M.2 SATA when I wanted a M.2 NVMe for a client and opened it before I realised my mistake. I was going to send this to the committee, but I figured that others would be interested. The main LUV server is a VM in a DC in Germany. The new server has much less bandwidth and less reliability (no redundant links or UPS) but low latency for Melbourne. Some years ago I ran a hands-on training session on BTRFS and ZFS using VMs. Would there be interest if I ran that again online with BBB for video- conferencing? Stripes, this may interest you as it will give you the chance to try stuff out on ZFS with no risk to your data. Firefox menus disappear

Hello, I thought I had already raised this issue, but I can't see any emails. So maybe mistaken. But anyway, the problem is when I click on a pull down menu - any pull down menu - in Firefox, it previously appears, but then disappears immediately. e.g. right click on a web page (any web page). On click on the one of the Firefox plugin menus. Or the Firefox menu. Unlikely many of the reported similar problems restarting Firefox solves the problem, and it doesn't appear to be a problem with my Profile. As in I have completely rebuilt my profile from scratch several times, and eventually the problem comes back. Rather, I have found what triggers it appears to be clicking on a link within notmuch inside emacs. The page loads OK. Then the very next menu fails however. It only happens if I open a page from emacs. If I manually run "firefox-esr http://www.google.com/" or "xdg-open http://www.google.com/" it works fine. This has happened a while now on a range of different computers, running different profiles, on different versions of Debian. Just noticed running strace on the emacs process, the firefox invocation is a bit more complex then I might have noticed. I don't see any URL even on the command line. Wonder if there is something here that is killing menus. PERC wasted space

I put a 1TB SATA disk in a Dell server with PERC RAID controller and configured that disk as a single virtual disk (IE the disk gets a RAID signature the PERC likes and is passed through to the OS). The disk when viewed on a regular SATA controller has 1953525168 sectors, when it goes through the PERC it has 1952448512 sectors, that is 525MB less space when going through the PERC! CamLink / Linux / Bullseye

Hello, I have a CamLink original which worked fine under Debian buster. But then I upgraded to Debian Bullseye. Now I no longer get the vl4 driver for the device. Running a Buster VM on the computer, and then redirecting the USB port inside the VM, this works fine. But ideally would like to get this working without a VM. Any ideas on how to debug this issue? The closest I can see is this bug report: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=966541 - but I don't get any stack trace in my kernel log files. Also this is Camlink, not the newer CamLink 4K. September Main Meeting

The meeting went well, we had some interesting discussions about things to do for LUV. I had the browser tab open for hours after I had stopped listening. When I closed the tab at 1:40AM there were still people talking. We should have these meetings more often. https://web.archive.org/web/20200510230233/https://luv.asn.au/ One issue that was discussed is copying data from the old web site. The above URL has the Wayback Machine link for the LUV web site. We need volunteers to go through that and find what's worth copying to the new web site. I don't think that a 1:1 copy would be a good idea, some things can be done differently. For example I think that the FAQ should be a page linked at the top rather than a link in the sidebar that is less likely to be seen. If you are interested in helping out with this then contact me off-list. We had at most 26 "users" in the room (I was 2 "users" so I think 25 unique people). We did use most of the available network bandwidth for the server when we had more than 6 people sending video streams. If we keep the number of active video cameras low we could have many more users, I think 50+ is quite possible.
