FSF fires a broadside at W3C

The World Wide Web consortium is considering a proposal to specify standards for HTML extensions to implement Digital Restrictions Management (DRM). The proposal is supported by Netflix, Microsoft, Google and the BBC. HTML was initially designed to describe the semantics of text and give control to the browser over how to present it. Since it became common for companies to have web sites, they have steered the development of HTML towards precise control over what the user sees and the behavior of the page -- arguably going in the wrong direction, but not an injustice ... until now. Of course, the W3C cannot prevent companies from grafting DRM onto HTML. They do this through nonfree plug-ins such as Flash, and with nonfree Javascript code, thus showing that we need control over the Javascript code we run and over the C code we run. However, where the W3C stands is tremendously important for the battle to eliminate DRM. xterm escape codes for some things sometimes screwy

Every now and then, I don't release the shift key in time before pressing <enter> in a terminal, and it just works and I don't cry. Sometimes, after running *something* that I haven't identified yet, it doesn't just work - it craps out and puts in some escape sequences: goodterm> cat -v <shift-enter> badterm> cat -v <shift-enter> ^[[27;2;13~ Anyone know how to restore the previous mappings and/or identify what screws it up (presumably some damn ncurses crap)? -- Tim Connors

Unrelated, I looked for a password changer myself yesterday, for a LDAP backend, and found http://www.symfony-project.org/plugins/upSimpleLdapPlugin It is written in PHP (as PostfixAdmin) and the source code isn't huge # wc -l *.php 157 ldapAuth.class.php 14 ldapException.class.php 171 total so it wouldn't take too long to replace the LDAP calls (connect, get and set) with database calls. I plan to use it in Symfony so will use a provided validator for the input. Regards Peter

http://sourceforge.net/projects/postfixadmin/ I've been using PostfixAdmin for a while to manage multi-domain mail servers. I've been using MySQL for the backend although PostfixAdmin also supports PostgreSQL (not sure if it did years ago when I first started using it). As an aside I'll consider using PostgreSQL in future although MySQL has been working well. Anyway my problem is that a client wants a web interface to allow users to change their own password. Using the System Rescue Disc

Hi, I downloaded and burned the System rescue disc (Gentoo + X), I have a 2.5 inch Sata drive hooked up with a usb to the computer. I plugged the drive in after booting from the system Rescue disk, should I pug everything in and then boot up? I ask because I do not have the drive with me at this time. I am trying to recover some data from the drive for my boss, and for the sake of security, I refrained from bringing it home. Dmesg says this (plugged in after booting): [629.870083] usb 1-1.4: new high-speed USB device number 5 using ehci_hcd [640.064013] usb 1-1.4: New USB device found, idVendor=174c, idProduct=5106 [640.064019] usb 1-1.4: New USB device strings Mfr=2, Product=3, SerialNumber=1 [640.064022] usb 1-1.4: Product : AS2105 [640.064024] usb 1-1.4: Manufacturer: ASMedia [640.063857] usb 1-1.4: can' set config#1, error -110 Given that I will have to mount this drive (Win XP) what values do I extract from dmesg to do that? Gentoo has some empty directories set up in /mnt so I could use one of those, or should I be mounting into /media? mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/usb (what) /mnt/drive ???? or would booting the system up with drive powered up and connected produce a better outcome? Many thanks Andrew It would seem to me that either the hdd is stuffed or the usb box is. I suggest that you take the hdd out of the box and plug it into your sata or ide ports directly. Murray

The Australian Internet Governance Forum, curated by auDA, has been run for the last few years as an open, collaborative workshop promoting and facilitating discussion on the key topics driving the future of the internet. The 2013 event will be held in Melbourne on 16th-17th October. This year's topics include gTLDs, rights of children online, legal rights and cybercrime and several others. Linux Australia is proud to be working in partnership with auDA and intends to provide financial support (subject to Council approval) to the event, with the specific aim of assisting diversity of representation at the forum. rsync and overwriting files

By default when rsync transferrs a file named foo it will create a temporary file named .foo-xxxx and then rename it over the previous file. The advantage of this is that there is an atomic operation replacing one version of the file with another. The disadvantage is that if you use a filesystem like BTRFS or ZFS with deduplication disabled (as you will do unless you have unusually large amounts of RAM to space) then creating a new file will break copy-on- write. I have some situations where I want to transfer backups of data to ZFS and BTRFS filesystems and not use excessive disk space by using multiple copies of database files. I'm aware of send/recv functionality, but it's not ready for use on BTRFS and on ZFS it requires that the sender be running ZFS. Can I make rsync overwrite files in place instead of recreating them? If so how? Yes I've read the rsync man page and didn't find it.
