Maildir to mbox
by Russell Coker 26 Jun '13

Is there a good program in Debian to convert a Maildir of mail to an mbox file? A quick search only turned up one that is part of the qmail package. I'd rather have something that doesn't conflict with my favourite MTA. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

changing size of partition
by Russell Coker 26 Jun '13

What's the best way to change the size of a partition? I've got an image for a 2G CF card that I need to change to fit a larger CF card while remaining bootable. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

CCISS data structure
by Russell Coker 25 Jun '13

25 Jun '13

I have just received a free HP DL-385 system, it's quite a nice server with 16G of RAM, 3*SATA and 5*SAS disks. I want to set it up to run Linux software RAID-1 with Ext4 on a pair of SATA disks for booting and ZFS RAID-Z2 on the 5*SAS disks for data storage. The problem I have is that the boot disks were wiped, the DVD drive is broken and ILO isn't licensed for remote disk access. This combined with the fact that USB booting apparently doesn't work (it doesn't boot with my usual USB boot device) means that I have to make the SATA disks bootable before connecting them. The fact that the HP system takes ages to boot and is really noisy means that I don't want to make dozens of attempts to get it by trial and error. Does anyone know what the CCISS disk format is for a single disk RAID-0 (IE a JBOD)? Presumably there is some offset where I can just put an image of a regular bootable SATA disk and have it work. Thanks. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

svn bisect across forks to find fix for openwrt dropped ARPs
by trentbuck＠gmail.com 25 Jun '13

25 Jun '13

The IRC channels are asleep, so it's time for Plan Omega - ask LUV. 2,123 is a lot of commits to just eyeball, and I'm not sure how to deal with the fact that e.g. r33965 isn't in the a_a branch. Any insights from a fresh perspective ? To #openwrt: | Anybody ever run across ARP not propagating to wifi devices across a | wired/wifi bridge? | | I see it in 10.03.01rc4, but not in 12.09.01. The problem is, | $customer is using some hobbyist board that doesn't use stock openwrt, | so I want to track down the fix so they can apply it to their fork. To #svn: | OK, so I'm in the... exciting position of trying to do a bisect across | three repos - a fork of a fork - and I don't have the equipment to | actually perform tests myself, and I'm a git weenie who doesn't know | svn very well. | | I'm trying to work out a reasonable strategy to find the commit that | fixed the bug, so I can tell the devs, and they can either merge that | entire tree in, or cherry-pick that specific commit. Symptoms present on Gateworks GW2347 as at r11689 (in-house svn repo) Symptoms present on TP-Link 1043ND as at 10.03.1-rc4, r24045 (svn://svn.openwrt.org/openwrt/backfire) Symptoms absent on TP-Link 1043ND as at 12.09.01, r36088 (svn://svn.openwrt.org/openwrt/attitude_adjustment) Allegedly in-house repo is based off http://svn.gateworks.com/generic/trunk r402. Allegedly gateworks repo is based off svn://svn.openwrt.org/openwrt/trunk r33965. I *think* in both cases, the fork simply committed upstream-as-at-N as a monolithic commit, rather than importing all the commits or using externals or whatever. Symptoms: - as a wired or wifi device, attempt to ping a wifi device. ARP fails. tcpdump on AP indicates in some cases ARP never hits the AP, in other cases it does but no reply is seen. - wifi devices associated with different APs can ARP each other. - wifi device can ARP a wired device. * * * I suppose the other things to do, while I wait for you lot, is to look through the openwrt BTS for likely-looking closed tickets, and to find the appropriate MLs on gmane to punt the question to.

The last time I had to use a "branded" CD drive was in the 90ies when Sun SPARC machines failed to boot from "no Sun" CD drives. For that reason I kept one external Sun CD drive which was probably 20 times slower than everything else available at the time. At least the install wasn't putting time pressure on me, I could go for lunch after a few clicks to kickstart the process;-) Regards Peter

I don't think that K9 allows you to have multiple sender addresses in a single account. But it does let you have multiple accounts and use the correct sender address for each one. The Gmail option seems better than the apparent functionality of K9 in this regard. On Mon, 24 Jun 2013, "Trent W. Buck" <trentbuck(a)gmail.com> wrote: > You want to run this from android? register name into windows dns
by James Harper 24 Jun '13

24 Jun '13

The DNS on our network is managed by windows domain controllers. I have been managing entries for Linux machines manually but with IPv6 it's getting painful. Is there a daemon or script that can do this for me? Google hasn't given me any answers yet... Thanks James

"Secure Boot", Windows 8, and Linux
by Toby Corkindale 24 Jun '13

24 Jun '13

Hi, There's been a bit of discussion on the list in recent months about problems with Windows 8, Secure Boot and Linux. I just thought I'd chip in to say that I've actually found it to be fine -- Ubuntu 13.04 installed really simply, resizing the Windows 8 partition down, and adding itself to the BIOS boot menu. I needed to go into the BIOS and disable Secure Boot, but this hasn't prevented Windows 8 from continuing to work fine too. -Toby

Just a warning if you're writing shell scripts...
by Tim Connors 20 Jun '13

http://mywiki.wooledge.org/BashFAQ/105 (subshells in bash don't always inherit "set -e" from the parent. depending on bash version, whether posix is set, and the current phase of the 16th moon of Jupiter. And some idiot thought it was a feature to remove this functionality at some point because it was ambiguously worded in POSIX, so make it never ever work. silently.) If you frequently use "set -e" (aka "set -o errexit"), so that you don't have to explicitly check every error code, because you want something to fail immediately rather than potentially cause havok down the line because you accidentally missed one exception check, then don't. Every short little bash script you write is eventually going to become a convoluted mess anyway, so you might as well start off in Perl and be done with it. Changing PCI IDs of Intel wireless cards from Linux for Thinkpad laptops
by Toby Corkindale 19 Jun '13

19 Jun '13

So I bought another Lenovo Thinkpad laptop recently. (I like them, they work well with Linux, they're solidly built.) After having some minor annoyances with the Broadcom wireless in my previous thinkpad, this time I ordered one with an Intel wireless chip that'd be well supported in Linux. However once the laptop arrived, I discovered that the Intel option doesn't support the 5GHz band, which I really need at home. (There's some kind of ridiculous non-802.11 interference on the 2.4GHz band) Oh well I thought, I'll just pop a different mini-PCIe card into the laptop. I popped the one out of my old thinkpad and put it into the new one.. Which then promptly refused to boot with "Error 1802 - Unauthorised wireless card detected" *sigh* You'd think a card from one Thinkpad would be authorised to work in another, but apparently not :/ The detection is done via the PCI ID. So anyway.. I found some rumours online about being able to switch the PCI IDs of the Intel wifi cards from within Linux, permanently. (I guess it's adjusting the EEPROM somehow) (If I can switch the ID of the new card to the old one, then I'll also need to recompile the Linux driver to recognise it, but that's easy enough) I don't suppose anyone here has had to do this for their own Thinkpad (or HP) laptops, and if so, has any pointers? Thanks, Toby PS. It used to be the case that modified BIOSes existed that removed the stupid whitelist, or changed it, but with the advent of secure boot and Windows 8, it seems the BIOSs are cryptographically signed and so this is harder to achieve.
