A client of a client has problems with Outlook and they are looking at moving to different software. A basic Postfix/Dovecot installation does everything they need for email but the issue is calendaring. They want "shared diaries" with Outlook clients and phones, I think mainly iPhone. Getting mate-sensors-applet to appear

Hi, I've downloaded and installed sensors-applet (AKA gnome-sensors-applet, AKA mate-sensors-applet) into my Linux Mint Mate 17 (Qiana) systems. But it doesn't appear on my (bottom-edge) panel, and none of those three names appear when I enter Menu - All Applications - All (so that I can right-click and Add To Panel). Searching my computer yields 107 files and folders, including 2 executables... /usr/lib/mate-sensors-applet/mate-sensors-applet 77.9 kB /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sensors-applet/sensors-applet 86.0 kB ... but I haven't been game to just execute them from the search window. Any suggestions on how I can... (1) get it running on each bootup (2) have it appear all the time in the panel (3) enter its configuration mode (to set the temps, etc.)? Woeful Thunderbird Performance

Hi, Hope you're all keeping cool on this rather oppressive day. I have an i5-2450M CPU @ 2.50GHz with 4Gb of memory running linux mint 17. As the title suggests I'm finding Thunderbird to be very sluggish so I would welcome suggestions to help boost performance. (actually evolution was better in this regard) I have moved about 6 years worth of emails into the archive directory -- I presume exporting these out of Thunderbird into a searchable format (which one?) would help matters. Alternative mail reader suggestions are welcome. I'm using gmail (imap.googlemail.com) should I look at hosting my own email server? Digital ocean? On a related note: is there a searchable online archive of luv-main posts? The only thing I can find is this: http://lists.luv.asn.au/pipermail/luv-main/ which doesn't seem very satisfactory. I was storing about 6 years worth of luv postings but I deleted them in a vain attempt to rectify the above problem.

The Hardware Library

Today at the beginners meeting I was asked about donations to the Hardware Library. I think it's worth discussing the matter here. P4 systems and most parts from that era generally aren't useful, systems based around the AMD64 architecture are just too common. AGP video cards aren't useful because they only fit older systems and people who still have such systems in use are usually using them as routers or something. PCI Ethernet cards have some use, 2 port Ethernet cards are useful and 4 port Ethernet cards are VERY useful. RAM from systems of most ages is often useful, and when it isn't useful it's small and light enough that I'm happy to take donations and sort them out later. SATA disks are always useful, even the small ones. Large IDE disks are useful, for IDE 300G is large. All PCIe cards are useful except for NVidia video cards. As an aside if anyone wants an NVidia PCIe card then I'll bring some along. I usually don't carry them around due to driver issues. I will bring the Hardware Library to the BBQ. Hi there, I just recovered this message - got burried in my spam folder. Can I infer from the Nvidia comments that there are many problems with them ? Or are they just tricky but do work? (Debian based) SteamOS, HDMI and Xorg

Hi, I installed Debian based SteamOS on a Intel NUK i5 Box with HDMI connecting a Samsung UA32C4000 TV. The graphical installer works but after installation the start of X11 fails (just stripes so it does not get the resolution right) well, some xorg.conf and xrandr magic seems to be required. I will come to that. However, the graphical installer works.. Could I "steal" the information from it to get the right monitor data? Any ideas welcome Peter

It's using the framebuffer with 1360x768, just for completeness but that is not the issue. I debugged my way through the start and found a lot of glitches. There was a missing Intel video Xorg driver, then Mesalib modules missing, then LightDM segfaulting because there was no X (created a symlink to Xorg) and now it starts simply an xterm. I do not see the mouse so I cannot click in it, that would be next. So, overall, something must have gone wrong in the install, terribly. But it looked all good and I did not see any obvious errors.. I cannot believe the path to a working play console should be that rocky. I wonder whether it is worth continuing or better to install Ubuntu, the Steam client and then going from there. Any opinions or alternative ideas? Regards Peter
