noobish help with Virtualisation (virtual box)

I am a hobbyist, running a desktop, latest version, open-suse (15.0) system. I have recently changed to an AMD processor having used intel for a long time. I generally format and do a clean install on /, but have a /home partition which has been around for many years and may contain entries related to the intel processor rather than the amd one. I am trying to install and run virtual box. On starting a virtual machine I get a message: AMD-V is disabled in the BIOS (or by the host OS) (VERR_SVM_DISABLED). My BIOS says that "Secure Virtual Machine" is enabled. cat cpuinfo |grep svm shows that svm is on each core. dmidecode does NOT list the svm flag Further system info: Base Board Information Manufacturer: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. Product Name: B350M PRO-VDH (MS-7A38) Version: 2.0 Processor Information Socket Designation: AM4 Type: Central Processor Family: Zen Manufacturer: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Signature: Family 23, Model 1, Stepping 1 Thinking there may be detritus in my /home partition, I have created a new user, but experienced the same problem when starting the virtual machine. Any help on 'how to make virtual box work' would be appreciated, also any info on why cpuinfo says svm is available, but dmidecode does not? strange date issue

I'm running kvm with the -rtc option to try and test a bug related to the start of daylight savings time. strange swaks error

Seems that the VM receiving mail had the right daylight savings configuration while the system running swaks had the right date but gave the wrong timezone (thus triggering an alert for mail taking an hour to deliver). apcupsd / system reboot

Hello, For a while now I have had this problem that apcupsd doesn't restart properly on system boot - e.g. after power failure. The log appears fine: 2018-10-11 16:43:44 +1100 apcupsd 3.14.14 (31 May 2016) debian startup succeeded I can't remember for sure if the process is running or not. I think it might be, just to confuse matters more. However there is no connection been establed to the device (using SNMP over IP) and "apcaccess" reports dummy values. Furthermore it doesn't do anything on a power failure. If I manually restart it it starts working fine: /etc/init.d/apcupsd restart The logs appear as before: 2018-10-11 18:48:15 +1100 apcupsd exiting, signal 15 2018-10-11 18:48:15 +1100 apcupsd shutdown succeeded 2018-10-11 18:48:15 +1100 apcupsd 3.14.14 (31 May 2016) debian startup succeeded But now "apcaccess" returns correct values. Any ideas? I thought maybe the problem was using the hostname in /etc/apcupsd/apcupsd.conf and putting the lookup in /etc/hosts - should work but was wondering if it was trying to use DNS regardless and DNS is provided by a VM on the box that is still booting. The problem is the "RX errors" which correspond to ICMP packets missing. The system at the far end of the 6in4 link has monitoring that includes "ping6 www.google.com", until recently that was fine, since upgrading to Debian kernel 4.9.0-7-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.110-1 problems have started. The problems are somewhat intermittent. I don't expect that the recent Debian kernel upgrade broke this, maybe the reboot exposed some other problem. Does anyone know what "RX errors" means in the context of 6in4 interfaces on Linux? Is there any way of getting the kernel to log every error to dmesg or something? I expect this will be a really easy problem to solve once I know what the errors mean. When the errors happen I run tcpdump on the far end of the 6in4 link and see the packets going out, I run tcpdump on the ethernet device and see the encapsulated packets going in, and when I run tcpdump on the 6in4 device I don't see those packets but I do see packets for local ipv6 addresses. Apache + Open Office Headless

Hi there, I have a VM with 16GB RAM and 8 Cores. It's job is to accept a HTTP request using PHP, take the data (documents) and run open office to convert it to plain text and return it. Up until now this process has been fine. It seems that the server hangs as it just gets overloaded. I've just changed the cron jobs from the sending servers to space them apart and also upped max / min spare servers. Previously I have tried other approaches like the JAVA headless and running OO as services and using HA Proxy. They haven't been successful (could have been my implementations). The script loads its own version of OO each time a connection is made. Is there a better way of doing this? Seems like an awfully big VM to falls over/hang all the time. Your help / ideas / rants are appreciated. Thanks Piers

Appointment reminder app

I am looking for a simply appointment reminder app, I am NOT interested in anything online. As well as normal appointments I would like to be able to put in events that occur on particular day of the month, such as "2nd saturday, Local market". BSD Calendar would do exactly what I want but i cannot get it to print anything. When the command is run it does read the "calendar" file (checked that with ltrace), but never prints anything. Has anybody got BSD calendar to work, what should the data file look like. It would not be to difficult to write a simple app to do this but SURELY there must be something out there, hmmmmm a look at the source of BSD Calendar would probably be usefull. Lindsay

Hi All, If we have any photographers in the list, has anyone been able to use the Display Colorimeter and Photo Spectrometer features of this device under Linux? (Specifically Ubuntu 18.04)? It is an expensive piece of kit, but I need to be able to print with certainty, because printing is so damn expensive. The alternative is to find a way to profile the roll printers used by Office works or other print services. Many thanks Andrew Greig

MTP probe of USB drive

Upon attaching a USB hard drive to an old, but up to date, Linux laptop last weekend, the block device corresponding to the drive was not created. The kernel logs showed that the USB device was probed for mtp support, which failed. After searching the Web, the solution that I found was to create a script in /etc/profile.d containing Export MTP_NO_PROBE=1 Are there better solutions than disabling MTP probes altogether?
