android-x86 and fails to boot grub2

Hi All After the posts last week about android I thought I would try android-x86 on my Samsung Slate currently running Debian Buster. At first I tried the rpm version using alien. The scripts configure android with qemu and also adds a grub entry for dual booting. The qemu version works well. When I tried to boot neither android nor Debian would boot. Android would just return to the grub screen and Debian would stuck at ' Loading Linux 4.19.0-4-amd64' . So more fool me for trying the alien rpm root. So boot with rescue usb, chroot, and alien -e android-x86 to remove android. Update-grub and reboot. All OK boots into Debian. So make Android-x86 boot usb and reboot into installation mode. Install Android into /dev/sda1 without formatting as per http://www.android-x86.org/documents/installhowto. Do not install grub. Installation finishes. Option to run android with out rebooting, works fine. Reboot and can't get passed grub. Same symptoms as before. Booting with rescue usb, chroot, and update-grub appears to work but after reboot won't get passed grub. Then at grub screen click on c and get grub shell. set root(hd0,1) and get the grub prompt again, using ls I can see all of the required files with tab to autocomplete so, linux /boot/vmlinuz-4.19.0-4-amd64 root=/dev/sda1 sticks. Doesn't return to grub prompt. No timeout. Get supergrub usb. Boot, sees the partition and can boot Debian. What am I missing here? I getting close to nuking everything and reinstalling. Any ideas? linux heart rate monitor / activity tracker?

I'm looking for both wearable hardware and software for heart rate monitoring on linux. On wrist or chest strap is fine. Heart rate monitoring is essential. Oxygen saturation and ECG functionality would be nice too. I've got a better idea of what I **DON'T** want than what I do. I don't want anything that requires sync to a corporate server, I want to BUY a product, not BE one (optional syncing is fine, I can choose not to use it). I just want something that gathers data and either transmits it in real time to my bluetooth-paired desktop machine and/or android[1] device, or logs the data for later download. I'll also need software to display and/or analyse the data. I've seen lots of cheap devices on ebay for $10-$20 but have no idea if they can be made to work with linux or if they use their own proprietary protocols and only work with their spyware app. I'd prefer to avoid brand name equipment, because I see no good reason to pay $300 or $400 for hardware not significantly better than the stuff that sells for under $20 - especially when I explicitly do not want any "value added" cloud services they provide, services that get promoted as features but I see as spying malware. in short what i'm after is: * cheap * open source data acquisition, visualisation, & analysis * open data formats * no mandatory spyware service Any clues or pointers to relevant hardware or software would be appreciated. Wicd network

Is anyone seeing this problem and if they are do they know a solution? About 2 twice a week when waking the box from suspend wicd fails to connect to the wifi with a bad password error. The solution usually is to suspend the box again and on wake the second time the wifi is connected and working. Occasionally on wake the suspend dialogue is still on the screen and everything except movement of the mouse is frozen. In this case a hard reset is the only solution. I am using the latest Devuan with LXDE but have ca-certificates, elogind, libelogind0, libpam-elogind, openssl held back to earlier because the city supplied wifi here uses SSL3 upgrading these disables my ability to connect. grsync

Hi All, I have just used grsync to ensure that my RAW datafiles on my RAID 1 drive and a copy of the RAW datafiles on my External hard drive are consistent by effecting necessary changes on the external drive as necessary. But what I now have (5 hours later) is a whole new copy of the RAW datafiles inside the existing directory on the drive, this has doubled my storage (200Gb to now 400GB), I plan to delete the parent folder on the drive and retain the new folder. But what is going to happen when I want to update with more RAW files? There is a check box "ignore existing" but how far does that go? If I make changes to the contents of an "existing folder" on my RAID 1 drive will those changes also be applied to the folder in the External drive? For the moment I will rename the NEW folder to RAW2files move it to the top level and then delete RAWfiles. and rename RAW2files to RAWfiles. Many thanks Andrew Greig

What currently available media would you suggest to your prior self when starting out, or to someone just starting now? Studying this closely would have been good for me. Note open access. RAID drive folders now multiplying on desktop

Hi All, Having recently set up my machine with btrfs RAID 1, I now have 13 folders named "Data" on my desktop, and I expect that with each new access to my RAID drive I will get another one. I have not set my system to populate the desktop as I like to keep it clear. Normally the only item on my desktop is Trash. Is this a Gnome setting? I access my data through Dolphin file manager, and I have never seen this before (I have never used btrfs or RAID 1 before either). If I delete these instances am I likely to encounter one which will damage my system on deletion? Many thanks Andrew Greig

Hi All Now it is time to see if I have learned anything. 1Tb SSD and 2 x 2Tb SATA HDDs, motherboard is a UEFI board but I have never used UEFI with this board. Ubuntu desktop obviously ignored it. Using Gparted partition the SSD thus: 512MB EFI Partition /dev//sda1, formatted FAT32, primary (boot?) 8 Gb allocated to SWAP rest of the disk _*/*__dev/_sda2, primary, formatted btrfs mounted as / Partition the first HDD /dev/sdb1primary, formatted btrfs , mounted as /data Second HDD same size leave completely blank Remove the gparted disk and insert the Ubuntu Server disk commence the install Install the system and add the GUI using tasksel After the system is installed add the second HDD withtwo lines in the terminal sudo btrfs device add -f /dev/sdc1 /data sudo btrfs balance start -dconvert=raid1 -mconvert=raid1 /data Enjoy the set up. Please add any corrections. The reason I choose to use the g-parted step is because the ubuntu partitioner was difficult to use.

Skype oddities

Has anyone seen this behaviour with skype on Linux? I just changed my password and tried to log in, Skype rejected the new password even though they sent me an email confirming the reset. I reset it again same result. I reset it for a third time same result On the fourth reset it worked fine. The only thing I can think is that the first 3 passwords all had a y or a z in them and I have my location with Skype set to the UK while my keyboard is Swiss German which has the y and z changed over. Is it even possible for a system to get confused like that? Or is this perhaps just normal Microsoft / Skype behaviour? Richard -- Stripes Theotoky -37 .713869 145.050562

Disaster (was Re: Boot problems after adding 2 new disks)

Hi All I modified the /etc/fstab file to remove the reference to the /dev/sdc2 I used gparted live to delete the /dev/sdc2 partition I saved and quit and rebooted the machine, it stopped in an emergency condition Used CTRL + D to move forward, just came back to the same menu I removed the two SATA drives /dev/sdb1 and /dev/sdc1 and tried again, and it ended with the emergency state again. Now my SSD drive sda2 is not functional What is the best Rescue disk to use to clean out my new data and start again. Or, at a stretch , what do I need to do to set up uefi boot? Or should I avoid it? Many thanks Andrew Greig
