Booting Ubuntu on EFI PC
by dan062 25 Oct '11

25 Oct '11

HI guys, Having problems booting with Ubuntu 11.10 The PC works perfectly on live CD, detecting and configuring video correctly. Ubuntu install with no errors using default options. However when booting off newly installed OS, it just shows a blank white screen after showing a few bios stuff - I am not even sure if it has booted and it is just a video issue or a complete crash - but it does not seem to respond to keyboard. This is a new ASUS built box with a P8P67 LE Mobo. This has a EFI bios. So Is there a different installation procedure that needs to be done for EFI ? (its my first experience with EFI) Most EFI stuff from google seem to relate to Mac booting! Cheers Daniel

Imagemagick - convert to same format as another image
by cory seligman 24 Oct '11

24 Oct '11

Hi all, I have an little microcontroller and LCD that can display windows bmp files, but it only seems to work with the ones provided. When I create a bmp file with the same basic resolution, colour depth etc, it fails to display. Does anyone know of a way to convert an image to bmp format having the same characteristics as a reference image? I'm sure I could work it out for this specific case, but it would be handy thing to be able to do in general. anyone? cory

joining video files
by Lindsay Sprinter 21 Oct '11

21 Oct '11

I have downloaded a 4 part video that had been split into parts for down loading and I wish to put back into a single file. Any one have any sugestions for a decent utilty for this. I minor point is it plays the files at the wrong aspect ratio the correct being 4x3. The files are a fairly rare german film of the history of the Schnellboots (literaly fast boats, the german ww2 torpedo boats).. The following is part of the status from mplayer.......... ========================================================================== Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family Selected video codec: [ffh264] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg H.264) ========================================================================== ========================================================================== Opening audio decoder: [faad] AAC (MPEG2/4 Advanced Audio Coding) FAAD: compressed input bitrate missing, assuming 128kbit/s! AUDIO: 44100 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 128.0 kbit/9.07% (ratio: 16000->176400) Selected audio codec: [faad] afm: faad (FAAD AAC (MPEG-2/MPEG-4 Audio)) ========================================================================== Lindsay

help urgently needed tomorrow when I buy new hardware
by James Sinnamon 19 Oct '11

19 Oct '11

Dear Linux users, Firstly, Sheila has asked me to apologise because, due to interruptions, she is still working on an article about the FOSS and GNU Linux Open Day in Victoria, As I am writing, Sheila is working feverishly on that article and says it should be published soon on http://candobetter.net . My existing hardware configuration and/or the Linux distributions I have tried to install have got the better of me. See APPENDIX 1. For this reason and because I want a PC with sufficient grunt to be able to run a java application (which will run the order of 100-200 or more threads ( http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/db/conf/pdpta/pdpta2004-3.html#Sinn…) It seems that a 64 bit processor will be needed as a 32 bit processor cannot address more than 4 Gig of memory (see http://developer.amd.com/Pages/1130200686.aspx http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/microarc… ). I intend to go to a hardware dealer (possibly MSY in Cheltenham tomorrow) so i need advice as to what will be a hardware configuration that: 1. has sufficient power to run the multi-threaded Java application mentioned above; and 2. will mostly allow at least one Linux distribution to be installed and quickly without causing me anywhere the number of problems I have faced for at least the last two weeks (see APPENDIX 1). I would also be interested in what Linux Distribution others would recommend. I have had serious problems with Debian and Saboyan and have found Linux Mint and Ubuntu wanting (see APPENDIX 1). With the latter I two, I simply could not get the Apache server to log its rewriting of URLs with the Rewrite module. If you aren't able to help with an e-mail before 10.30AM tommorow, could you please consider texting me on 0412 319669 so I can ring you back and get advice from you after I have left home? Thanks, James Sinnamon APPENDIX 1 : Problems I experienced trying to create a Linux installation on which I could develop an test Drupal web-site It seems as if I won't be able to install the Linux configuration I need to update and test the Drupal content-managed site I help administer ( http://candobetter.net) I just could not get Apache to write logs of its rewriting of URLs on either my Ubuntu or Linux Mint distributions and have not yet got the advice I need from a Linuxquestions forum ( http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-server-73/how-to-log-apache-m…) I tried installing Debian Linux, then Samboyan Linux. Debian just may have worked but it came with almost no Apache configuration files. I would have had to write everything myself or copy them from elsewhere, So I tried to install Samboyan Linux. Samboyan promised to work "out of the box" but after it spent many hours downloading over 1 Gig of files, most programs failed to work. Some programs simply failed to appear after I selected them from the menu, I wish I had persevered with Debian. What subsequently bothered me about Debian was that when I told it to re-boot it simply re-booted straight back to Debian! it somehow skipped over both BIOS and the Boot sector boot menu. I could only see BIOS or the boot sector meu if I hit the reset button. What had it done to BIOS and the boot sector to make that happen? It seems that Linux Mint also tampers with the boot sector making some earlier Linux installations inaccessible. I found that the Linux distributions I used were unable to cope with my having two hard disk drives. They created boot sectors which contradicted each other on both Hard disks. Also, confusingly more than one Linux distribution was written to the same partition. One partition seemed to have the exact same Linux distribution written to it twice.

On Sheila's behalf: Wishes to interview open source activist woman on 3RPP Women's Show, midday this Thursday
by James Sinnamon 17 Oct '11

17 Oct '11

Dear Linux users, (Firstly, thanks to those who responded to my email with the subject "help urgently needed tomorrow when I buy new hardware". I have been too busy to respond, but will shortly.) Sheila would like to interview a woman from the open source community on the 3RPP feminist show Freewaves which is broadcast live this Thursday at 12:00PM. (Please don't look at the 3RPP schedule at http://www.3rpp.com.au/schedule hoping to find it. It's maintained by volunteers and is out of date.) Ideally the interviewee would also be from around the Mornington Peninsula. So, if you would like to talk on radio about open source software and women with Sheila this Thursday please contact her by dialing 97835047 or by e-mailing Sheila Newman <astridnova(a)gmail.com> . Thanks, James

can't start xen vm "Cannot Plug VIF" October 2011
by Craig Sanders 16 Oct '11

16 Oct '11

i've got a VM on a citrix xenserver 5.0.0 machine that won't start. it was running find until it was rebooted on Fri afternoon. starting it from the (windows-only) xencenter GUI results in: "This VM cannot be started, as its network interfaces could not be connected. One of the NICs is in use elsewhere." starting it from the command line results in: # xe vm-start uuid=88915b63-d794-e021-4f78-b03f46e352b0 Cannot plug VIF VIF: 5dfd3886-8b48-20e5-4231-30284d7b185d anyone seen this before? know how to fix? i've tried deleting and re-creating the network interface for the VM. i've tried booting the VM without any network interface at all. i've tried "xe vif-unplug --force uuid=5dfd3886-8b48-20e5-4231-30284d7b185d" (doesn't work, expects the VM to be running, not halted). in fact, i've lost track of all the things i've tried doing that haven't worked. I haven't rebooted the xen server and *really* don't want to have to do that. I'd rather create a new VM and copy the OS (debian, fortunately so relatively easy to do) than reboot the server. craig ps: I've found this[1] via google, which looks like the same problem. the answer given by J Cannon at the bottom is flat out wrong. http://forums.citrix.com/message.jspa?messageID=1431119 -- craig sanders <cas(a)taz.net.au> BOFH excuse #32: techtonic stress
