printing with HL2130 in fedora

Hi all, I'm having trouble getting the Brother HL2130 mono laser to print in fedora. When setting it up in ubuntu I just plugged in it, and it automatically added to the list of printers and worked. A forum post about a similar problem with another brother printer suggested installing some foomatic packages, so I've installed all of them in the fedora repos. I've also installed both the drivers available from the brother website for the HL2130 ( http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_prn.…) and rebooted both the computer and printer. It is now recognising the printer and identifying its' model correctly. If I send any job to it, whether it be to print something, even the printers own test page (which is stored in the printer) or checking the toner levels I just get a notification say that's it's starting the job, and then another one that it's completed, without anything being printed or any of the LEDs on the printer changing. I just checked as I wrote this that it still works fine with ubuntu. Any ideas? Cheers, Bianca

Hi to any Thunderbird wizards out there, Have tried to install a copy of TB 13.0.1 onto my desktop system, as somehow my laptop has that, and it is running smoothly there. Have gone to this web page, and followed the instructions on "install the newest release". > https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/installing-thunderbird-linux Have rebooted, and run System > Admin > Update Manager. But all I get on the new desktop system install is 13.0 not 13.0.1 Hmmm. Thanks very much for any info, or pointers to good web pages on this particular topic. btrfs and corruption

One of my Xen DomUs is getting memory corruption. I'm not sure why. I've replaced all the RAM in the system and run memtest86+. The other DomUs work well. Everything was fine before I upgraded to Debian/Testing a week ago, so presumably it's a software bug. The most common symptoms are application SEGVs and GLIBC reporting heap corruption for no apparent reason. Anyway I moved that system to btrfs and since then I've got a couple of corrupted files. Both files were from Debian packages so the --reinstall option to apt-get fixed that. strange mysqld CPU use

Running strace on process 20033 shows that it's stuck in a system call (see the above strace output). So it appears that one of the child threads of 20033 is using the CPU time. How do I determine which one it is? Does anyone have any general suggestions for debugging the case where mysqld is using a lot of CPU time while not doing anything? ZFS and kernel 3.2.0

I have a Debian/Squeeze system that's running ZFS quite nicely. Now I've just tried to install ZFS via the http://zfsonlinux.org/ method on a Debian/Testing system. I'm deploying a new server in the next week or so and it'll ramp up to full production over the course of the month after that, so it seems best to start with Wheezy even a little before the full release to avoid a painful upgrade later. The code doesn't currently build with kernel 3.2.0. Has anyone got it to work? Also has anyone got root on ZFS to work with Debian? ZFS wants to partition the disks itself so it can use 4K sectors and properly align things. I don't want to mess with that and the server in question will have an internal USB port that's ideal for booting such configurations. So I want to get a USB device with GRUB and an initramfs that starts ZFS for the root filesystem. USB TV card and Linux

Hi all. I have searched for info on setting up a USB TV card under Linux and have been overwhelmed with the amount of info. Harvey Norman have a Kaiser Baas USB TV stick on sale at present for $48 and a Kaiser Baas dual device for $87. I thought I would take my notebook (Suse 64 12.1) down there and try the device in-store. What programs should I install before I get there, please? What is the advantage of the dual tuner stick? DSCP ECN

We've got networks people claiming that we're killing their network link with packets claiming to be so high priority that they're swamping VOIP. Previous correspondence with them imply it's ssh and ftp connections that are responsible. Specifically, they're saying that we're setting DSCP to 0x2, which is not defined. Anyone know how to read the RFCs to say whether we're doing something wrong (we're not doing anything to change ftp, ssh or iptables rules from default settings)? Anyone seen this before? Indeed, http://bogpeople.com/networking/dscp.shtml has no setting for dscp=0x2. I doubt anything, particularly the alledged ssh, is using the old RFC791/RFC1349 interpretations of bits 3 => 1 = High Throughput; 0 = Normal Throughput This: http://www.quora.com/How-can-I-identify-interactive-SSH-but-not-SCP-packets shows that ssh/scp use QoS that don't map to any defined DSCP numbers. But that shouldn't be a problem, no? The routers shouldn't kill the network just because a client told them to watch out for the flying elephants. -- Tim Connors

Audioproblem after upgrading to kernel 3.4.4

I recently upgraded one of my systems from kernel 2.6.39.4 to 3.4.4. both are custom complied kernels. With the new kernel some videos have problems playing with some players. Xine and mplayer don not work but VLC does. The major error message from both xine and mplayer is "Unable to open audio: No available audio device" Mplayer gives more information, the problem is any video that uses a AAC (MPEG2/4 Advanced Audio Coding) sound track fails (formats so far that do not work is flash video and MP4), other soundtracks appear to be OK, The actual failure appears to be caused by the sound driver not exepting the hw setup arguments from Xine and mplayer. It sort of appears in the latter kernel something has changed in the sound driver. A search on the net produced little information, only a single report stating simliar symptoms , the report being only a week old. Anybody know anything on this. BTW the system uses Debian 6.0.x
