We've got networks people claiming that we're killing their network link with packets claiming to be so high priority that they're swamping VOIP. Previous correspondence with them imply it's ssh and ftp connections that are responsible. Specifically, they're saying that we're setting DSCP to 0x2, which is not defined. Anyone know how to read the RFCs to say whether we're doing something wrong (we're not doing anything to change ftp, ssh or iptables rules from default settings)? Anyone seen this before? Indeed, http://bogpeople.com/networking/dscp.shtml has no setting for dscp=0x2. I doubt anything, particularly the alledged ssh, is using the old RFC791/RFC1349 interpretations of bits 3 => 1 = High Throughput; 0 = Normal Throughput This: http://www.quora.com/How-can-I-identify-interactive-SSH-but-not-SCP-packets shows that ssh/scp use QoS that don't map to any defined DSCP numbers. But that shouldn't be a problem, no? The routers shouldn't kill the network just because a client told them to watch out for the flying elephants. -- Tim Connors

Audioproblem after upgrading to kernel 3.4.4

I recently upgraded one of my systems from kernel 2.6.39.4 to 3.4.4. both are custom complied kernels. With the new kernel some videos have problems playing with some players. Xine and mplayer don not work but VLC does. The major error message from both xine and mplayer is "Unable to open audio: No available audio device" Mplayer gives more information, the problem is any video that uses a AAC (MPEG2/4 Advanced Audio Coding) sound track fails (formats so far that do not work is flash video and MP4), other soundtracks appear to be OK, The actual failure appears to be caused by the sound driver not exepting the hw setup arguments from Xine and mplayer. It sort of appears in the latter kernel something has changed in the sound driver. A search on the net produced little information, only a single report stating simliar symptoms , the report being only a week old. Anybody know anything on this. BTW the system uses Debian 6.0.x

Minecraft on Debian/Testing

More than a year ago I installed Minecraft on a Debian workstation. The user was quite happy and had no interest in upgrading it or networking it. Now they want it upgraded to the latest version to support mods. I try to connect to the Minecraft server and I get the below error. Any tips on what I should do? connectivity issue Internode to Linode

I am totally confused by a networking issue I have. I have 3 servers with Linode and am having problems connecting to 2 of them. I have contaced Linode and they insist everything is OK from their end. So the symptons. I cannot connect to nicbaxter.com.au using ssh, web, mail for the last 3 hours or so. I haven't knowingly made any changes to the server. BTRFS conversion

I've got some filesystems that I want to convert to BTRFS. They currently are Ext3/4 on Linux Software RAID-1. My plan is to break the RAID, convert one of the constituent devices with the btrfs-convert program, and then add the other one via "btrfs device add". How do I get the new BTRFS device to use RAID-1 for data and metadata? Avi, from your talk I got the impression that this was already possible but the man page doesn't reveal how. I'm using btrfs-tools version 0.19+20120328-3 and kernel 3.2.0-2-amd64 from Debian/Unstable. Do I need to get a newer version of the kernel or the tools? Periodic ntp loss of synchronisation problems

I am having periodic ntp synchronisation problems. ntp doesn't directly log anything - but I am using nagios3 to track it's synchronisation and I periodically get problems - several times a day. I can't figure out what is causing the loss of synchronisation. Perhaps a burst of ntp packets dropped? But wouldn't ntp log something about this? Any suggestions on logging more info to find the cause or deeper insights into what is going wrong would be appreciated. Debian repository software

Hi, I wonder if I can get some advice from the list? I want to run a little Debian repository -- but I have a requirement which seems to be missing from the software tried so far. I want the repository to maintain multiple versions of the same package. ie. So I could do this: dput my-package_1.00-1_all.deb dput my-package_1.11-1_all.deb dput my-package_2.00-1_all.deb And then on a machine using my repo, be able to say something like: aptitude install my-package (> 1.10 & < 1.99) while on another machine, say: aptitude install my-package (>= 2.00) So far, repo management software I've seen will purge the older version out when you upload a new one. CPU clock speed

The below is the same from an NEC PC also running Debian/Testing. Both systems are under light desktop load at the moment, and the above Lenovo system still ran at 1.2GHz even when the MySQL bug I previously mentioned was afflicting it. Any ideas on how I can get the Lenovo system running at full speed? According to sensors(1) the Lenovo has a CPU temperature of just over 60C on both cores while the NEC is at 40C and 45C for it's cores. So it appears that there may be some cooling issue on the Lenovo, this would be partly due to the Lenovo being a compact desktop case while the NEC is a medium tower case with a big vent in the side. It would also be partly due to the fact that the Lenovo system is in the home of someone who keeps their thermostat turned up high. But those factors probably don't explain a 20C difference, so I presume that the Lenovo has some dust.
