CUPS problem on upgrade from Squeeze to Wheezy

I have a workstation with a Brother_MFC-7362N printer running with CUPS. It was working fine running Debian/Squeeze on i386 but now that I've replaced it with Debian/Wheezy on amd64 it's not working. It says that everything works and claims that jobs are printed but nothing comes out of the printer. PostgreSQL and indexing with json types

Hi, Just something interesting I noticed today.. As you've probably already seen, PostgreSQL 9.2 added support for storing JSON documents in a 'json' type field. It also adds the V8 javascript engine as a first-class procedural language. Initially I thought that you'd probably end up with a lot of tables with key metadata separated out into your int/char/etc types so you could index it.. but someone has pointed out that you can index into the json data using the v8 engine and Postgres' functional indexes. That is reasonably nifty. Currently you need to write a couple of helper functions yourself, but I suspect we'll see more of this brought into the built-in functions by 9.3. This is test to see if gmane.org.user-groups.linux.luv.general works bidirectionally. If it does, I can move LUV from mutt ("personal; deal with immediately") into gnus ("lists; when I get around to it"), where it belongs. Yay! PS: yes, I know that gnus can do IMAP, and that it's allegedly much faster in Emacs 24. It's a workflow decision, not a technical support decision.

debian stable vulnerabilities

1. Apparently there are *LOTS* of vulnerabilities which are unpatched vulnerabilities in debian stable but presumably people just live with it or am I missing some part of the picture? - See below 2. Is there a version of java plugin that I can run under iceweasel/firefox that I can install in debian stable? My firefox warns me that Java Plug-in 1.6.0_26 (disabled) is known to cause security or stability issues... If there is a better mailing list for these debian specific questions - please let me know but there may be others who are might interested in these answers as well. Pulseaudio - output to all devices?

Heya, I use Pulseaudio, and I frequently use a USB audio device. However I find that when I plug the device in, I have to go into the settings (eg. pavucontrol) and switch output over to the new device from the default built-in audio. What I would love is for Pulseaudio to just output to EVERYTHING. I realise it'll waste a bit of CPU time sending audio to the hdmi monitor and the built-in soundcard.. but eh, whatever. There's an i7 CPU in this machine, it'll cope. Any suggestions on how to tweak it to do this? Cheers, Toby PS. Please, no Pulseaudio hating comments. I quite like it, and think it does a good job. YMMV, but keep it to yourself.

different MTU on different VLAN's

I want my regular eth0 interface to have an MTU of 1500, and have eth0.12 with an MTU of 9000, but Linux seems to want to keep the MTU consistent across all VLAN interfaces. Has anyone done this before? I don't know if it's a limitation of my Ethernet hardware or of Linux. In theory, as long as Linux only transmits <=1500 byte packets it shouldn't matter what the underlying hardware is set to, so I don't know why this restriction exists. Thanks James

broken lvm partition

Hello, Just want to double check my facts before I do something wrong here. I discovered a computer trying to read past the end of it's disk. attempt to access beyond end of device sdq: rw=0, want=488022554, limit=488017920 fdisk reports: Disk /dev/sdq: 249.8 GB, 249865175040 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30377 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x000d7193 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdq1 1 30 240943+ 83 Linux /dev/sdq2 31 30378 243770310 8e Linux LVM My assumption is that specifying end=30378 is invalid for a disk that only has 30377 cylinders. Have I got this correct? Another identical computer does have end=30377, so I suspect this one got it right. Also wondering why dmesg reports 488017920 blocks but fdisk reports 240943+243770310 block size (and on good system reports 240943+243762277 blocks) - is there a difference in block sizes here? /dev/sdq2 is LVM, and has three partitions for root, swap, and var. --- Physical volume --- PV Name /dev/sdq2 PV Size 232.48 GB / not usable 966.00 KB Allocatable yes PE Size (KByte) 4096 Total PE 59514 Free PE 50403 Allocated PE 9111 PV UUID 58fU6l-MLlo-h5Ar-n9jx-0poC-axdS-VoAmND How do I recover the LVM partition with minimum disruption?
