Need to tweak Postfix to use SMTPS on port 465, outgoing.

Internode has recently stopped accepting outgoing email on port 25, with a switch to SMTPS on port 465. (Found out after outgoing mail was blocked by their mail sevrer, and their helpdesk sent a link to related info.) Though I'd prefer proper postconf commands, the only related postfix config info I've found on the intertubes is a direct edit of /etc/postfix/master.cf to uncomment the SMTPS lines: #smtps inet n - - - - smtpd # -o syslog_name=postfix/smtps # -o smtpd_tls_wrappermode=yes # -o smtpd_sasl_auth_enable=yes # -o smtpd_client_restrictions=permit_sasl_authenticated,reject # -o milter_macro_daemon_name=ORIGINATING A quick check of /etc/services shows we already have: ssmtp 465/tcp smtps # SMTP over SSL So after a "postfix reload", outgoing mail was ... still rejected by mail.internode.on.net Hmmm, a "postconf | more" showed: default_transport = smtp so I commented out the SMTP line in /etc/postfix/master.cf : smtp inet n - - - - smtpd Another "postfix reload", and outgoing mail is ... still rejected by mail.internode.on.net The question now is what am I missing? (I'm most reluctant to blow postfix away and start figuring out how to make mutt talk SMTPS by itself At least I have a history of good experiences with postfix MTA.) IRC based self education

One thing I've been thinking of doing for a while is IRC based self education. The idea is that a group of people who are interested in a topic arrange to go on IRC at a set time to learn about it. When you get stuck on something you ask the channel and probably someone else will be working on it and be able to help you. One thing I've been thinking of doing is try running some BSD variants in VMs. Anyone interested in doing this? SpamAssassin questions

Does anyone know of a good Australian whitelist of domains that are totally legit but trigger SA checks? For example seek.com.au triggers checks about lots of money but I want a job paying lots of money. Is there a way of configuring SA to have a per-user Bayes path for virtual mailboxes? EG mail is stored under /mail/$DOMAIN/$USER and I want Bayes under /bayes/$DOMAIN/$USER but there is no entry in /etc/passwd for the user. Why does the command "spamc -d 127.0.0.1 -c -u russell(a)coker.com.au < msg.txt" give a spam score way different from that which was generated when the mail was received? Seems that running spamc from the command-line gives different checks than when it's run by spamass-milter. https://wiki.debian.org/DebianSpamAssassin What's the pros and cons of SA as a Postfix content_filter vs spamass-milter? Prior to reading the above page I never realised that there was any way other than spamass-milter (which seems to work ok for me). What's up with the files like /etc/spamassassin/v340.pre /etc/spamassassin/ v341.pre /etc/spamassassin/v342.pre on Debian? log analysis

Whats a good FOSS log analysis system? I'm after something that will aggregate the logs of multiple systems and give results on demand through a web interface and allow alerts to be propagated to a monitoring system. Also what's a good FOSS system for graphing all the metrics of a system (network use, disk IO, CPU use, and arbitrary other metrics? Rebuild after disk fail

Hi All, I recently experienced an SSD failure, and so I have purchased another to set up my system again. I received some substantial help from this list early in 2019 to build my machine with this SSD as / and /home under Ubuntu 18.04 with two x 2Tb conventional drives in RAID for storing my work, all are running btrfs. After the machine was running I was asked if I had set up the machine using Ubuntu Server, I hadn't, because at that time I didn't see those options. I am thinking, then, for this build, perhaps I should set it up using Ubuntu Server. I will need to get my system to recognise the RAID drives as well. So before I jump in the deep end again, are there any "gotchas" of which I should be aware. Will the server version make life more reliable? Many thanks Andrew Greig

BTRFS and ZFS training

As they involve deliberately corrupting data to exercise the filesystems it's a good idea to to this on a VM so a typo won't cause problems. I can give access to a VM for doing this if anyone needs it. But the system in question doesn't have a lot of RAM so anyone who gets a VM will need to complete the training reasonably quickly. Hi All, I found this document from Feb 2019, and after some amazing help from Craig and others I came up with this: Proposed road map for an installation of a system disk and two Data disks set up as a RAID1 array 1Tb SSD and 2 x 2Tb SATA HDDs Using Gparted partition the SSD 512MB EFI Partition dev/sda1 formatted FAT32 primary (boot?) 8 Gb SWAP rest of the disk _*/*__dev/_sda3primary formatted btrfs Partition the first HDD /dev/sdb1primary formatted btrfs (Disk has data now so leave this alone) Second HDD same size leave completely blank (also leave this alone) Remove the gparted disk and insert the Ubuntu Server disk commence the install Install the system and add the GUI using tasksel After the system is installed run the- /device add/ - process and the /balance/ commands two lines in the terminal - my question is will these commands remain the same? sudo btrfs device add -f /dev/sdc1 /data sudo btrfs balance start -dconvert=raid1 -mconvert=raid1 /data You can do this after the system is installed, or from a root shell while booted on gparted. It doesn't matter either way, although it's probably better/easier to do it from gparted (there'll only be the one /data fs for the ubuntu installer to detect so you won't end up with /data0 and /data1 again) craig Many thanks Andrew Greig
