Replicator model detaching

I've got the LUV Makerbot Replicator working, I will demo it at some meetings some time soon. One problem I'm having is that the model in progress will often get detached from the platform. The "Calibration Dual" model file that ships with the replicator has become detached three times, each time the front left corner lifts from the platform first and then eventually it all comes unstuck and the model is destroyed. I tried the "Cube Slide" model file that ships with it once and it detached when it was on the last black segment, so the model was mostly OK but it's still not a successful result. ALSA capture not working

Hi, This is on a fresh install of Debian 7.1 XFCE AMD64 on an Optiplex 780. It's multiarch - i386 added so Skype i386 can be installed. Skype appears happy, but calls to the Echo / Sound Test Service don't return my audio. The simplest manisfestation of this problem is that ALSA capture doesn't capture anything, but silence. I'm using: arecord -d 5 --vumeter=mono /tmp/foo.wav The meter doesn't move, and playing back with: aplay --vumeter=mono /tmp/foo produces silence (but playing another .wav file is OK). In alsamixer, I've maximised all Capture settings, and have set the input sources (both of them) to "Front Mic" (this _should_ be the correct input - the Mic is connected at the front and in the playback devices cranking up "Front Mic" results in the Mic audio going to the headset (i.e. sidetone)). According to lspci, the audio device is a: "Intel Corporation 82801JD/DO (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)" Curiously, we had the same problem with a completely different machine earlier this year - all OK but Microphone Capture not working (Debian installation report at: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=701171 We never "solved" that - the workaround was to use a "USB" headset/microphone (i.e. USB Sound "card"). wildcard expansion

ls -l *.mkv *.avi *.mp4 The above command will give me errors if I happen to have no .avi files or no .mkv files. How can I write a command to give a list of all video files and not give an error if some don't exist? Preferably in bash, but I'm willing to try another shell if necessary. It would be better if you have the livecd or install cd, but you can also use other livecd as well e.g. knoppix. root (hdx,y) setup (hdx) x is the mbr usually points to hd0. y is the partition where your grub stage 1 is, just press the tab key to auto-complete. Let us know if it works. LMDE update, now have boot error

Hello All, My LMDE laptop just went through a huge update, and now can't boot. Every grub boot option returns "error: no such partition". There are quite a lot of stories on this, and many suggest using grub rescue mode, then use "ls" to see what partitions are seen. This doesn't work, always returning this same error message. I guess I will have to boot from a rescue disk, but not sure what I then need to do. Any help appreciated. Cheers, -- Regards, Terry Duell

Path MTU discovery and bridged ADSL PPPoE

Hi, This is perhaps more of a networking question than Linux, but all the devices involved are running Linux.. I have what is probably a common home setup -- an ADSL modem operating in "pure bridge" mode, connected by ethernet to a Linux server running pppd with the PPPoE plugin. Same linux server is providing DNS, DHCP and NAT for other clients connected via wireless and ethernet. This setup was running fine for many years with a Billion 7300RA ADSL modem. I just switched it over to a newer Billion 7800NL modem in the hope it'd provide better sync speeds on my hopeless phone line. (It does, with some SNR tweaking) However for some reason path MTU discovery has completely broken when using the newer modem. The primary Linux box is fine, but all clients (whether wired, wireless *or even virtual*) fail to work unless I manually set their interfaces to an mtu of 1492. I'm pretty confused by this -- pppd was setting itself up with a 1492 mtu even on the old modem, and that managed to propagate out just fine. The only thing that changed was the modem, but that shouldn't affect this issue. I'm bamboozled. Could anyone advise me on what could possibly be done to figure out what has happened? Or better, a way to fix it? Investigative notes: 1) New router was switched back to standalone mode (where it does pppoe, dhcp, nat etc) and in this mode, all clients worked fine. So the ADSL link and ethernet ports seem OK. 2) Old router was booted up to verify settings and that stuff works OK with it. Settings for ADSL line were similar, and stuff does work with it.
