Hi LUVers 1.Linux (Debian Wheezy) running on a cloud server 2.Everything working fine for weeks/months 3.Last nite, for some reason all disk writes to server stops 4.Even root cannot write to anywhere on the disk, and plenty of space left on disk (~80%) All file permissions look OK. 5.After reboot all return to normal.(ie problem is fixed) My questions: Is it fair to assume that the problem was caused by something that the cloud provider has done? Or could it be something on server OS side? What can cause this? (I am thinking the virtual disk hosting the VM has become readonly somehow, but how? ) Cheers Daniel.

The performance of the ZFS became very bad - resulting in disk write timeouts in the Ubuntu VM. The Ubuntu server assumed a faulty disk and remounted the disk as read-only to prevent further damage. Although you are very unlikely to have FreeBSD/ZFS underneath there are other ways to "produce" high I/O latency. If so you should find these disk I/O related errors in your kernel logs. I am afraid there is not much you can do (if you do not run the host system). It only needs a short period with this problem and your system becomes unresponsive. Monitoring.. I did not do that for the read/only mount but all services running on that VM turned red on the Icinga webpage. Regards Peter

File transfer between Linux and Apple iOS

What's the best way to transfer files (images, media files, etc.) between a Linux machine and an Apple iPad running iOS 7.1? It should preferably be achieveable from the shell and amenable to scripting. I've started looking at http://libimobiledevice.org/ and it appears there are utilities available from that project, but I'm yet to find a good howto and I don't know what other options are open and which protocols are available. Also, I would rather avoid taking any risks that might adversely affect the device.

Ubuntu touch not "marginalising" carriers.

At Melbourne mobile last night I participated in a Google Hangout with Ubuntu Phone product manager Richard Collins where he said some rather controversial things about Ubuntu Touch / Ubuntu Phone. Namely that it would succeed because it wouldn't "marginalise" the poor carriers out of customising their device and that access to the filesystem would be "up to the individual manufacturer". I'm curious to see if anyone has the same "what the hell" reaction I did to hear the Ubuntu brand and all it represents being pitched this way. Postscript clipping box, why a line when not stroked

Hello All, I have a Postscript calendar program which I use to print out a calendar I can put up on a wall for planning purposes. From what I have seen, a clipping box should not "appear", but it does with the following code. For the interested, I can email the main calendar code as well, but not included here for brevity. There are two routines, callmonth and calendar defined prior in the one file. Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy - Frequent X crashes and user switching keeps breaking

Hi folks, I upgraded about a month or two ago from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10. I run an Nvidia card with the binary drivers (tried both the release and the -updates version). I have two displays, one 1920x1200 and one 1280x1024. I don't use Unity - to me it makes sense possibly for touch devices, but as I prefer using a keyboard and mouse, it's not for me... so I'm currently running gnome-panel etc. My card's: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G92 [GeForce GTS 250] (rev a2) I've found that after rebooting, sometimes after updates, user switching no longer works. I've found running this: sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults --show-manual-login true as documented here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/379485/problem-changing-users-in-ubuntu-13-10 ... seems to fix user switching, but I still keep getting xorg crashes ("An error has occurred in your system" or similar dialogs). Submitting reports comes up with nothing. Also, lightdm thinks my left display is my right display, and my right my left - yet once logged in as a user, all's right with the world? Am I right in thinking that Ubuntu have deliberately broken something to do with gnome and are trying to push me towards Unity? ... or do I need to blow away some config files somewhere and reset things to default? Thinking perhaps of switching to LXDE and/or back to Debian. Anthony

Yes. Have tried the helpdesk already. There is no support for Linux whatsoever. This means you can have a play without trashing or otherwise repartitioning the SSD. Last time I tried this, *something* didn't work (might have been not waking from screensaver? I forget exactly), and I never got around to figuring out what it was. This may well have since been fixed. I ultimately ended up just running my Chromebook in regular ChromeOS mode, as I'm really only using the thing occasionally as a a slightly glorified web browser, and I got sick of it whining loudly at me on every boot about the possible doom associated with being in developer mode. unexpected tcp behaviour

I have an application under Linux that talks to a windows machine. Previously I'd assemble each packet into a big buffer and write it out, eg: write(sock, buffer, length); But a recent change meant I am now writing out the header separately, eg: write(sock, header, header_length); write(sock, buffer, length); The packets are sent separately, but it's TCP and the reassembled stream at the Windows end is identical, but the windows end now gives an error. I changed it to: send(sock, header, header_length, MSG_MORE); write(sock, buffer, length); And it works again (and is better for network efficiency reasons), but it was something I didn't expect and I wasted a bit of time comparing packet traces... Am I right in thinking that this is a bug in the windows application and that it does read() instead of recv(..., MSG_WAITALL) (or whatever the winsock equivalent is), and doesn't handle when the read is less than expected, or is there something I'm not getting? If it matters, the windows application is SQL Server Management Studio. My application translates between TDS and postgres. Thanks James
