The IRC channels are asleep, so it's time for Plan Omega - ask LUV. 2,123 is a lot of commits to just eyeball, and I'm not sure how to deal with the fact that e.g. r33965 isn't in the a_a branch. Allegedly gateworks repo is based off svn://svn.openwrt.org/openwrt/trunk r33965. I *think* in both cases, the fork simply committed upstream-as-at-N as a monolithic commit, rather than importing all the commits or using externals or whatever. Symptoms: - as a wired or wifi device, attempt to ping a wifi device. ARP fails. tcpdump on AP indicates in some cases ARP never hits the AP, in other cases it does but no reply is seen. - wifi devices associated with different APs can ARP each other. - wifi device can ARP a wired device. * * * I suppose the other things to do, while I wait for you lot, is to look through the openwrt BTS for likely-looking closed tickets, and to find the appropriate MLs on gmane to punt the question to.

The last time I had to use a "branded" CD drive was in the 90ies when Sun SPARC machines failed to boot from "no Sun" CD drives. For that reason I kept one external Sun CD drive which was probably 20 times slower than everything else available at the time. At least the install wasn't putting time pressure on me, I could go for lunch after a few clicks to kickstart the process;-) Regards Peter

The DNS on our network is managed by windows domain controllers. I have been managing entries for Linux machines manually but with IPv6 it's getting painful. Is there a daemon or script that can do this for me? Google hasn't given me any answers yet... Thanks James

"Secure Boot", Windows 8, and Linux

Hi, There's been a bit of discussion on the list in recent months about problems with Windows 8, Secure Boot and Linux. I just thought I'd chip in to say that I've actually found it to be fine -- Ubuntu 13.04 installed really simply, resizing the Windows 8 partition down, and adding itself to the BIOS boot menu. I needed to go into the BIOS and disable Secure Boot, but this hasn't prevented Windows 8 from continuing to work fine too. -Toby

And some idiot thought it was a feature to remove this functionality at some point because it was ambiguously worded in POSIX, so make it never ever work. silently.) If you frequently use "set -e" (aka "set -o errexit"), so that you don't have to explicitly check every error code, because you want something to fail immediately rather than potentially cause havok down the line because you accidentally missed one exception check, then don't. Every short little bash script you write is eventually going to become a convoluted mess anyway, so you might as well start off in Perl and be done with it. Changing PCI IDs of Intel wireless cards from Linux for Thinkpad laptops

So I bought another Lenovo Thinkpad laptop recently. (I like them, they work well with Linux, they're solidly built.) After having some minor annoyances with the Broadcom wireless in my previous thinkpad, this time I ordered one with an Intel wireless chip that'd be well supported in Linux. However once the laptop arrived, I discovered that the Intel option doesn't support the 5GHz band, which I really need at home. (There's some kind of ridiculous non-802.11 interference on the 2.4GHz band) Oh well I thought, I'll just pop a different mini-PCIe card into the laptop. I popped the one out of my old thinkpad and put it into the new one.. Which then promptly refused to boot with "Error 1802 - Unauthorised wireless card detected" *sigh* You'd think a card from one Thinkpad would be authorised to work in another, but apparently not :/ The detection is done via the PCI ID. So anyway.. I found some rumours online about being able to switch the PCI IDs of the Intel wifi cards from within Linux, permanently. (I guess it's adjusting the EEPROM somehow) (If I can switch the ID of the new card to the old one, then I'll also need to recompile the Linux driver to recognise it, but that's easy enough) I don't suppose anyone here has had to do this for their own Thinkpad (or HP) laptops, and if so, has any pointers? It used to be the case that modified BIOSes existed that removed the stupid whitelist, or changed it, but with the advent of secure boot and Windows 8, it seems the BIOSs are cryptographically signed and so this is harder to achieve.

stable filesystem

Can anyone comment (anecdotal will do) on the most stable filesystem for USB backup disks? I just had a server stop (no keyboard, no ping, etc) because I attached a usb disk with an ext3 fs that had gone bad. The event log was being hit so hard with messages that it couldn't do anything else. Unplugging the disk made the server responsive again, but obviously this isn't the behaviour I was expecting. A FS with better quality kernel code (eg rate limiting in kernel logging would be a good start!) would be preferable to something that might perform a few % better. I've gone with xfs for now but changing is easy enough. (The disk itself could be bad, but a SMART selftest doesn't indicate that this is the case.) Thanks James

I see issues reported around ZFS and NFS under FreeBSD but I did not bother to look into it - I don't use it that way (and can afford to avoid it;-) Arjen, I am surprised to hear the ZFS is faster than ext4. I did not benchmark (the performance is "good enough" for my purposes) but I believed a COW system isn't the best for databases. Regards Peter
