Brett Smith will illustrate how copyright, licenses, patents, trade agreements, and other laws all play a role in deciding whether and how we can create, use, and share free software — and by extension, who controls our computers. Members of the public are welcome. No technical knowledge is required. Brett Smith is visiting Melbourne to speak with government negotiators about the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) and the impact on free software. About Brett Smith ----------------- Brett is a GPL Ninja. He works in the Free Software Foundation's Licensing Compliance Lab, as license compliance engineer. Brett answers complex licensing questions from the public, writes widely read and timely posts for the FSF's blogs, codes up Python programs, and dashes across the country to give input to policy makers. Brett also ran the GPL version 3 drafting process. Proprietary software companies love to talk about how they hire "ninjas." Well, free software has ninjas too! Unfortunately though, without an understanding of why their freedom matters, we watch many people drift slowly back to proprietary software. Fully-free distributions have an important role to play in spreading not only free software, but the values of our community. We'll discuss popular fully- free distributions, common arguments and sticking points, and how this can super-charge our advocacy. Ben is a free software developer from Brunswick. He's also a LUV committee member. If you're lucky he might not talk about software patents again. ** Anti-competitive Aspects of UEFI Secure Boot — Lev Lafayette ** The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) a defines a secure replacement for BIOS firmware by allowing verification of digital signatures before booting. Whilst this does protect against malware such as rootkits, legitimate concerns have been raised that certain non-free operating systems will use this hardware feature to prevent users from booting other operating systems (e.g., Linux). This presentation addresses the technical background to UEFI, the concerns raised on monopolistic practise, and the potential solutions. Lev is a systems administrator and quality management coordinator at the Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing, a graduate from Murdoch University and has recently completed an MBA in Technology Management from Chifley. Linux Users Victoria will be holding a mini-conference, install-fest and establishing yet another new regional chapter on Saturday September 29 in Shepparton! We already have a small number of speakers on some basic features of Linux and the Free Software movement (one on "Moving to Free Software" and one on "Office Applications". He never could quite let go of wanting the systems to work just right, so was given the keys to the observatory computers, ands lowly brought the systems kicking and screaming, into the modern age. Machines running Linux came to represent a far more sensible way of managing a heterogeneous network of custom controllers and hardware. And he's not joking about the modernising: halfway through his tenure, he took part in a project to replace what was almost certainly Australia's oldest continually operating production computer — the telescope control computer that had been faithfully reading and controlling the telescope's position 10 times a second for the past 35 years (and acting as a 10kW room heater), with an industrial Linux machine that only took up half a rack. This talk is a summary of that journey through time (but not space). Tim has since left the dizzying heights of the observatory, and helps ensure the Bureau of Meteorology keep the data flowing. When he's not busy failing over www.bom, he likes to hoon around on bikes that don't crash because of proprietary kernel drivers. ** OpenWRT: A GNU/Linux based firmware program for embedded devices such as residential gateways and routers — Bernie Schelberg ** OpenWRT is a GNU/Linux distribution for your wireless router, particularly common residential networking devices. It is a highly configurable system that enables you to do many things that normally require expensive equipment to do effectively. Bernie Schelberg has a Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, and works as a computer programmer by day (and night!). He is passionate about free (libre) software, and enjoys tinkering with various distributions, virtualization, and embedded devices such as phones. ** Note — BTRFS talk cancelled ** Unfortunately, the previously announced talk on BTRFS had to be cancelled / postponed. ** Library of LUV ** Library of LUV is a collection of books available for loan to members. LUV lists; down-time and unsubscribe notice

Hi all, You may have received an unsubscribe notice for one of more LUV mailing lists earlier today. Do not panic, you are still subscribed to all your LUV mailing lists. Earlier this week LUVs mail server broke down and a current backup of the list subscribers was not available. As I setup new lists ysterday, I temporarily used an older backup of list subscribers to populate these new lists. Today I rescued current subscriber data from the old server and used that to populate the new lists. Before I did that, I had to clear the lists, and I forgot to make the system NOT send notifications when doing that. You were all (silently) re-subscribed approximately a minute later. Apologies if I caused any unnecessary freak-outs :-) The list archives are not yet available on the new system, but rest assured these archives were backed up properly and are not lost.
