Fraser McGlinn, Networking Fundamentals, Troubleshooting and Packet Analysis
Let's be honest, the concept of networking seems like it is pretty
simple and most of the time it "just works". But what is actually
happening under the hood? How can we troubleshoot and identify the
problem when things go wrong without feeling like we are working on some
alien lifeform?
This talk will focus on the basics of networking, the absolute
fundamentals to any sort of connectivity. It will get deep into packet
analysis using tools such as tcpdump and wireshark, help understand the
underlying protocols and use this as a tool to troubleshoot some real
life networking issues.
Fraser McGlinn is a Network Engineer who has been working in the ISP
industry for just shy of five years. Day to day, his role has varied
from running a core MPLS network and provisioning new services to
building and maintaining services such as Radius, DNS and NMS
Monitoring. Fraser has been a Linux fan since a young age, and built his
first Linux PC in 2007 running on old parts that he scraped together
from the junk pile at the local computer recycler. It ran for a few
years hosting web servers etc from under his bed.
Sam McLeod, High Performance, Open Source Storage
Sam McLeod has designed and implemented a purely solid-state, high
performance modular storage system - that is completely configured and
provisioned in code.
Ops lead at InfoXchange and active DevOps community member, originally
from Christchurch, New Zealand and now a Melbournite for four years Sam
is driven by the idea of improving both the technology sector and the
product delivery journey or as Larry Wall said "Easy things should be
easy, and hard things should be possible". You can find him ranting on
twitter under the user @s_mcleod or on his neglected blog:
https://smcleod.net. He has also recently started an online DevOps
community: https://zendevops.com.

Before and/or after each meeting those who are interested are welcome to
join other members for dinner. We are open to suggestions for a good
place to eat near our venue. Maria's on Peel Street in North Melbourne
is currently the most popular place to eat after meetings.
LUV would like to acknowledge Red Hat for their help in obtaining the
venue and VPAC for hosting.

Hi Folks,
Heard about GPG, but never quite gotten around to getting set up? Well
Software Freedom Day on Saturday is your chance. Stoo's talk at 11:30am
has all the details and we're hodling a Cryptoparty / GPG keysigning
session at 12:30pm.
http://www.sfd.org.au/melbourne/
Don't have a GPG key? Take a look at the FSF's guide to email
encryption, and complete steps 1 and 2. If it all seems too hard, we're
happy to help you on Saturday.
https://emailselfdefense.fsf.org/en/
Have a GPG key now? Run the following command in a terminal, copy
the output into a text document and print it out on slips of paper to
give out at the key signing:
gpg --fingerprint [your email address]
Look forward to seeing you on Saturday!
Regards,
Ben

Confirmation of adjourned LUV 2015 AGM
This notice is to confirm that Linux Users of Victoria Inc. will be
holding the adjournment of its Annual General Meeting, on Saturday 19th
September 2015. The meeting will be held in the Boardroom of Electron
Workshop at 3.30pm.
The only business to be conducted at this adjourned meeting is that on
the notice of the original AGM (to which you should refer), namely
committee and financial reports, and election of the committee.
Explanation: Under the new Model Rules, the original AGM, on 1
September, had to be adjourned because it did not reach quorum. If the
adjourned meeting does not reach quorum within 30 minutes, then the
members present (so long as there are at least three) can conduct the
business as if a quorum were present.
Note that the meeting is scheduled at this time and place for
convenience, since we expect a number of LUV members to be attending the
Software Freedom Day event anyway. However, keep in mind that this
adjourned AGM is a separate LUV meeting, and is not part of the Software
Freedom Day program.
Electron Workshop is on the south side of Arden Street, about half way
between Errol Street and Leveson Street. Public transport: 57 tram,
nearest stop at corner of Errol and Queensberry Streets; 55 and 59 trams
run a few blocks away along Flemington Road; 402 bus runs along Arden
Street, but nearest stop is on Errol Street. On a Saturday afternoon,
some car parking should be available on nearby streets.
LUV would like to thank Electron Workshop for making their boardroom
available for this meeting, also Red Hat for their help in obtaining the
Trinity College venue and VPAC for hosting.

There will not be a regular LUV Beginners workshop for the month of
September. Instead, you're going to be in for a much bigger treat!
This month, Free Software Melbourne[1], Linux Users of Victoria[2] and
Electron Workshop[3] are joining forces to bring you the local Software
Freedom Day event for Melbourne.
The event will take place on Saturday 19th September between 11am and
4pm at:
Electron Workshop
31 Arden Street, North Melbourne.
Map: http://www.sfd.org.au/melbourne/
We will be demonstrating GNU/Linux distributions, the Raspberry Pi,
Arduino and more. You will also get to see free software games on the
big screen - bring your laptops (and perhaps a mouse) if you want to
help put some of them to a mutiplayer test! Newcomers will also be able
to get help trying out and installing GNU/Linux on their machines, and
can learn more about free software.
We will have several guest speakers throughout the day with talks on
contributing to free software, email encryption for beginners and more!
There will be a lunch break and light refreshments will also be provided.
More information about the event is available on the Software Freedom
Day Melbourne website: http://www.sfd.org.au/melbourne/
The day should be both educational and a lot of fun. Please spread the
word, and we'll see you there!

Software Freedom Day 2015 will be held at Electron Workshop, 31 Arden

adjourned due to lack of a quorum, the adjourned AGM will be held at
this event. If you cannot attend, please consider sending your proxy.
Notice of LUV Annual General Meeting, 19 September 2015
Linux Users of Victoria, Inc., registration number A0040056C, will be
holding its Annual General Meeting on Saturday, 19th September
2015, at Electron Workshop, 31 Arden St. North Melbourne.
AGM BUSINESS
The only matters of business to be considered at this meeting are:
1. Confirm minutes of annual general meeting on 20th September 2014.
2. Receive and consider annual report of the committee.
3. Receive and consider financial statements.
4. Elect committee: office-bearers (President, Vice-President,
Secretary, Treasurer) and ordinary committee members.
Nominations:
Nominations for committee positions will be accepted at the meeting. You
can nominate yourself, or another member if that other member agrees to
the nomination. If you wish to nominate yourself or another member, and
can't be at the AGM, you should nominate a proxy to do the nominating on
your behalf.
Proxies:
You may appoint another member of LUV as your proxy for this meeting, to
speak and vote on your behalf if you are unable to attend.
If you are submitting your proxy on paper, you should sign and date it.
If you are emailing your proxy, then the date and act of emailing will
be taken as the equivalent of signing and dating a paper proxy.
You can use the following form, which you can copy from between the
horizontal rules, inserting your own name and that of your proxy as
appropriate:
____________________________________________________________________
I, [insert your name], being a member of Linux Users of Victoria,
appoint [insert name of your proxy], being also a member of Linux Users
of Victoria, as my proxy to vote on my behalf at the Annual General
Meeting of the association to be held on 1st September 2015, and at any
adjournment of that meeting.
[You can add here any specific instructions to your proxy, such as
directions to vote in a particular way on a particular item. If you have
no specific instructions, you can delete this bracketed paragraph.]
____________________________________________________________________
Notes about proxies:
1. You can appoint any LUV member as your proxy. However, the committee
suggests that it's practical and convenient to appoint the President,
Andrew Pam, as your proxy, who can be trusted to act on your proxy
faithfully.
2. Emailed proxies should be sent to luv-secretary(a)luv.asn.au, and must
be received at least 24 hours before the meeting.
3. Members who wish to send a paper proxy by post should contact the
Secretary for the postal address to use. Such proxies also must be
received at least 24 hours before the meeting.
4. Paper proxies can also be presented at the commencement of the
meeting itself.
5. We recommend using the above form. However, under the new model
rules, you can instead use any form that clearly identifies your proxy
and is signed by you.
Questions about this meeting are best posted to luv-meta(a)luv.asn.au.
-- Andrew Pam, as LUV President.
