PLEASE NOTE CHANGED START TIME
Another group has the room before us, so we're starting half an hour
later this month.
7:00 PM to 9:00 PM Tuesday, August 7, 2018
Training Room, Kathleen Syme Library, 251 Faraday Street Carlton VIC 3053
Speakers:
* Roger, PF on OpenBSD
* Russell Coker, fail2ban
Roger will be discussing PF on OpenBSD including an explanation of what
PF is, how he uses it, the syntax and rules, logging, and tagging.
Roger is a *nix like OS enthusiast and a Django developer. Korn is his
shell, XTerm his terminal, vim his editor and PF his packet filter.
Python and C always sound good to him.
Russell Coker has just installed fail2ban on several of his servers and
will talk about how installing and configuring it was surprisingly easy
and why it offers significant benefits over iptables rate limiting or
having no protection against repeated connection attempts.
Russell has done lots of Linux development over the years, mostly
involved with Debian.
Many of us like to go for dinner nearby after the meeting, typically at
Trotters Bistro or Brunetti's in Lygon St. Please let us know if you'd
like to join us!
Linux Users of Victoria is a subcommittee of Linux Australia.

Docker is the currently the "kewl" way to both manage development
environments and deploy applications at extreme scale.
However it has new terminology, and a different architecture compared to
using virtual machines (the technology Docker is most frequently
compared with), so it can be confusing at first.
This talk is an entry level introduction to Docker. As well as
explaining what containerisation is and why it's useful, this talk
introduces key terminology and includes practical demonstrations showing
the basics of using docker images, containers and docker-compose.
Some basic Linux knowledge is assumed, as well as knowing what a network
port is.
Alec Clews has been using Linux since kernel release 0.99.13p17 (he
thinks, it was a long time ago) and works at PaperCut software as the
technical integration manager. He's a UNIX fascist and a beer snob but,
apart from that, is pretty laid back.

There will also be the usual casual hands-on workshop, Linux
installation, configuration and assistance and advice. Bring your laptop
if you need help with a particular issue. This will now occur BEFORE the
talks from 12:30 to 14:00. The talks will commence at 14:00 (2pm) so
there is time for people to have lunch nearby.
The meeting will be held at Infoxchange, 33 Elizabeth St. Richmond 3121.
Late arrivals please call (0421) 775 358 for access to the venue.
LUV would like to acknowledge Infoxchange for the venue.
