LUV Main November 2014 Meeting: Raspberry Pi update + systemd
Start: Nov 5 2014 19:00
End: Nov 5 2014 21:00
Event Link: http://luv.asn.au/2014/11/05
Location: The Buzzard Lecture Theatre. Evan Burge Building, Trinity
College, Melbourne University Main Campus, Parkville.
Location Link: http://luv.asn.au/meetings/map
Please note that the November meeting is on Wednesday night rather than
Tuesday night due to the Melbourne Cup.
Speakers:
* Alec Clews, Raspberry Pi update
* Russell Coker, systemd
Alec Clews, Update on Raspberry Pi
Alec will be talking about the latest news from the Raspberry Pi world:
The new Model B+ and A+*
New Pi hardware add-ons from local Melbourne developers
Native working cloud storage for the Pi. Ya!
News from the Foundation
Cool projects you may not have seen
Pi set-up scripts
(*The A+ is not released yet and anything I say will be based on
reasonable conjecture only)
Alec helped to break the Raspberry Pi order site when the product was
released and founded Melbourne Raspberry Jam. He can be found online as
alecthegeek in to many places. He drinks too much espresso, uses Linux
as much as possible and wishes he was a better Go programmer. He also
very proud of his Pi set-up scripts for IoT developers.
Russell Coker, systemd
What is involved with running systemd? What changes for a user? What
changes for a system programmer? What are the benefits and problems?
This talk will provide a high level overview of the changes.
Russell Coker has been working on SE Linux since 2001. He writes most of
the policy for Debian. He has done lots of other Linux development over
the years, mostly involved with Debian development.

Before and/or after each meeting those who are interested are welcome to
join other members for dinner. We are open to suggestions for a good
place to eat near our venue. Maria's on Peel Street in North Melbourne
is currently the most popular place to eat after meetings.

Mike Hewitt will be introducing newcomers to Linux to the use of the
"command line".
Mike has been interested in programming and electronics since his early
teens. He has worked on software and electronic projects using
mainframes and microprocessors and enjoys hacking (crazy word) existing
and new projects. He has been a keen Linux user since the Redhat floppy
disk installs of nearly thirty years ago. He spent 9 years as a teacher
and is now recovering from that experience and enjoying re-immersing
himself in Linux. He enjoys communicating with amateur radio satellites.
He enjoyed using CCNP and Dutch language skills to troubleshoot remote
networks. He enjoys working with Raspberry Pi, Arduino and so on along
with hardware recovered from discarded electronic equipment. He runs an
electronics club in Altona.

LUV Main October 2014 Meeting: History of MySQL, Content-Centric Networking
Start: Oct 7 2014 19:00
End: Oct 7 2014 21:00
Event Link: http://luv.asn.au/2014/10/07
Location: The Buzzard Lecture Theatre. Evan Burge Building,
Trinity College, Melbourne University Main Campus, Parkville.
Location Link: http://luv.asn.au/meetings/map
Speakers:
• Stewart Smith "A History of MySQL"
• Hank "Content-Centric Networking"
A History of MySQL
When MySQL was owned my MySQL AB it was doomed because it was a "toy"
database. Soon after Sun bought MySQL AB for $1billion there was concern
that MySQL was doomed at Sun.... and when Oracle bought Sun things
looked even worse. That being said, the truth is a lot more nuanced than
what has been widely reported.
We'll look at why MySQL development has been so centralized and where it
may be opening up. Who is doing actual development? What are they
working on and is it going to help you with new or existing
applications? How are they interacting with distributions and has there
been any change in adoption?
Why have so many hardware and software "next big things" in the MySQL
world just vanished and does this have an implication for the MySQL
variants of today?
This is an insiders look at where the MySQL world has come from and
where it's going. We'll look at Oracle MySQL, MariaDB, Percona Server
and other MySQL distributions.
Why do options other than Oracle MySQL exist? Are they seeing any
significant adoption and is Oracle's MySQL 5.6 seeing any adoption or
when may it see any?
Should you switch to MariaDB? Is MariaDB becoming an entirely different
database server? What other options do you have?
Stewart currently works for IBM in the Linux Technology Center on KVM on
POWER and OPAL firmware, giving him a job that is even harder to explain
to non-Linux geek people than ever before. Previously he worked for
Percona as Director of Server Development where he oversaw development
of many of Percona’s software products. He comes from many years
experience in databases and free and open source software development.
He’s often found hacking on free software, taking photos, running,
brewing beer and cycling (yes, all at the same time). He once helped
build a monorail in the middle of the desert.
Content-Centric Networking
This talk will discuss shortcomings of the TCP/IP-based architecture of
the internet and present the general idea of content-centric networking
as a viable alternative, as well as Xerox PARC's CCNx implementation of
the concept and related academic efforts under the name of Named Data
Networking.
This will look at:
• Scalability problems of TCP/IP and the concept of "intelligence at
the edge of the network"
• Content-centric networking as a new "thin waist" of the hourglass
architecture Comparison with CDNs and other ad-hoc solutions
• CCNx/NDN implementations: Questions answered and left open
• Opportunities for machine learning
• Scalability-stability tradeoff
• Speculation on impact on business and society
The talk is an invitation to join research in this area in a
hands-on manner.
Hank is a physicist by education and application programmer by vocation.
Having joined the internet pre-WWW he thinks it all went wrong at some
point and only disruptive changes will bring it back on track.
