Scott Penrose, Sending Linux to Antarctica: 2012-2017
=====================================================
A discussion on hardware and software and techniques used to send
hardware to one of the hardest places on earth and constantly transfer
data via satellite.
Scott Penrose is a Perl hacker with an interest in home automation. He
has been playing with electronics since he was old enough to burn his
fingers with a soldering iron. His first job was working with 6800
embedded CPUs in the early 90s. During the development of his solar
powered house in 2000 he knew that the only way to be safe and not
damage the batteries would be to fully automate the power and lighting
throughout his home. Scott has continued hardware hacking on a causal
basis, building musical toys, helping with the design and building of a
sophisticated glide computer and doing design and embedded coding for
buoys to measure waves in ice in the Antarctic. Although his day job
involves programming complicated CPUs, mostly under Linux, he has
retained a passion of for simplicity and feels that the Arduino meets
those requirements.
Annual General Meeting and lightning talks
==========================================
Notice of LUV Annual General Meeting, 4 October 2016, 19:30.
Linux Users of Victoria, Inc., registration number A0040056C, will be
holding its Annual General Meeting at 7:30pm on Tuesday, 4th October
2016, on the 6th floor of 200 Victoria St. Carlton VIC 3053.
The AGM will be held in conjunction with our usual October Main Meeting.
As is customary, after the AGM business we will have a series of
lightning talks by members on a recent Linux experience or project.
If you would like to give a talk, please pre-book your spot by mailing
luv-ctte(a)luv.asn.au.
AGM BUSINESS
The only matters of business to be considered at this meeting are:
* Confirm minutes of annual general meeting on 19th September 2015.
* Receive and consider annual report of the committee.
* Receive and consider financial statements.
* Elect committee: office-bearers (President, Vice-President, Secretary,
Treasurer) and ordinary committee members.
Nominations:
Nominations for committee positions will be accepted at the meeting. You
can nominate yourself, or another member if that other member agrees to
the nomination. If you wish to nominate yourself or another member, and
can't be at the AGM, you should nominate a proxy to do the nominating on
your behalf.
Proxies:
You may appoint another member of LUV as your proxy for this meeting, to
speak and vote on your behalf if you are unable to attend.
If you are submitting your proxy on paper, you should sign and date it.
If you are emailing your proxy, then the date and act of emailing will
be taken as the equivalent of signing and dating a paper proxy.
You can use the following form, which you can copy from between the
horizontal rules, inserting your own name and that of your proxy as
appropriate:
I, [insert your name], being a member of Linux Users of Victoria,
appoint [insert name of your proxy], being also a member of Linux Users
of Victoria, as my proxy to vote on my behalf at the Annual General
Meeting of the association to be held on 4th October 2016, and at any
adjournment of that meeting.
[You can add here any specific instructions to your proxy, such as
directions to vote in a particular way on a particular item. If you have
no specific instructions, you can delete this bracketed paragraph.]
Notes about proxies:
* You can appoint any LUV member as your proxy. However, the committee
suggests that it's practical and convenient to appoint the President,
Andrew Pam, as your proxy, who can be trusted to act on your proxy
faithfully.
* Emailed proxies should be sent to luv-secretary(a)luv.asn.au, and must
be received at least 24 hours before the meeting.
* Members who wish to send a paper proxy by post should contact the
Secretary for the postal address to use. Such proxies also must be
received at least 24 hours before the meeting.
* Paper proxies can also be presented at the commencement of the meeting
itself.
* We recommend using the above form. However, under the new model rules,
you can instead use any form that clearly identifies your proxy and is
signed by you.
Questions about this meeting are best posted to luv-meta(a)luv.asn.au.
-- Andrew Pam, as LUV President.

Before and/or after each meeting those who are interested are welcome to
join other members for dinner. We are open to suggestions for a good
place to eat near our venue. Maria's on Peel Street in North Melbourne
is currently the most popular place to eat after meetings.

Lev Lafayette, Spartan: A Linux HPC/Cloud Hybrid
------------------------------------------------
High performance computing offers preferred architectures for tightly
coupled multi-node multi-core task parallel computational problems.
Cloud computer architectures offer flexible and cost-efficient options
for single-node data parallel tasks. In the past these two solutions
have been developed and implemented independently, however a new hybrid
system called HPC/cloud architecture developed at the University of
Melbourne combines the two approaches with Linux as the core operating
system, SLURM as a workload manager, and OpenStack for the cloud component.
This approach better suits the existing workloads, while making it easy
to expand to meet the demands of the future, including plans to have
heterogeneous architectures as part of the overall Spartan system. As a
whole Spartan serves as a template for any future general purpose
implementation of mass compute resources.
*Lev Lafayette* is the HPC and Training Officer at the University of
Melbourne. Prior to that he served a similar role at the Victorian
Partnership for Advanced Computing for several years. He collects
degrees for fun and profit, and is an incorrigible community activist,
including as a long-serving LUV committee member.
Paul Fenwick, The Future is Awesome (and what you can do about it)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Technology is advancing at a faster rate than society's expectations,
and can go from science-fiction to being consumer-available, with very
little in the way of discussion in between, but the questions they raise
are critically important: What happens when self-driving vehicles cause
unemployment, when medical expert systems work on behalf of insurance
agencies rather than patients, and weapon platforms make their own
lethal decisions?
*Paul Fenwick* is an internationally acclaimed public speaker,
developer, and science educator. Paul is well known for presenting on a
diverse range of topics including privacy, neuroscience and neuroethics,
Klingon programming, open source, depression and mental health,
advancements in science, diversity, autonomous agents, and minesweeper
automation. His dynamic presentation style and quirky humour has
delighted audiences worldwide.
Paul was awarded the 2013 O'Reilly Open Source award, and the 2010 White
Camel award, both for outstanding contributions to the open source
community.
As a Freedom Loving Scientist, Paul's goal is to learn everything he
can, do amazing things with that knowledge, and give them away for free.
