The Linux Users of Victoria Annual Penguin Picnic will be held on Saturday, January 19, starting at 12.30pm at the Yarra Bank Reserve, Hawthorn. This is just near the intersection of Bridge Road, Burwood Rd, and Creswick Street Google Maps: -37.819794, 145.015785 Melways : 2H H-J 6-7 LUV will be providing various items for the BBQ, e.g., plates, sausages to cater for carnivores, pouletvores, piscevores, and herbivores, bread, onions, and sauces, and fruit. Please bring salads and drinks. The Annual Penguin Picnic is a big social occasion for members of LUV, a great opportunity to see in the new year and LUV's first meeting of the year. LUV Needs A New Server: Please Donate!

Dear LUV-members, The time has come for a generous person or organisation to donate a server to Linux Users of Victoria. It doesn't have to be brand new; a few year's old is fine. As long as it's rack mountable (1RU or 2RU) and comes with rack mounting rails, that has 4 GB of RAM, 2*120 GB disks, and 64 bit CPU(s). Of course, if you can provide better than that, that's really good too. As you can imagine, LUV will be deeply appreciative of any company or individual who makes such a donate. Assuming they are not deeply embarrassed by such recognition we will sing their praises on our mailouts, on our website, & etc. Not only this, you will also be providing a benefit for Wikimedia Australia, who also share space on our system. Chris Samuel, senior systems administrator at the Victorian Life Sciences Initiative, will be introducing Avoca - currently the 33rd most powerful computer in the world; and housed right here in Melbourne. Martin Paulo: An introduction to OpenStack Martin Paulo is a software developer with VeRSI (the Victorian eResearch Strategic Initiative). Way back when Martin started out writing assembly for embedded systems. From there, via grid programming, he made the move to more conventional software development, as a Java developer in the financial services arena. At VeRSI Martin has worked on and with the NeCTAR (National eResearch Collaboration Tools and Resources) research cloud: possibly the largest and most complex OpenStack deployment in Australia. OpenStack OpenStack is open source software that provides a cloud computing platform. From its early origins as a small Nasa project, OpenStack is rapidly gaining broad industry acceptance. Its ongoing development is guided by the OpenStack Foundation, a foundation backed by many key technology companies. In this talk Martin will provide an introduction to the concepts underlying OpenStack, and show how you can get going with your own personal OpenStack deployment. Unlike many other online learning systems (Learning Management Systems) such as Moodle, Whiteboard etc which are content management systems (CMS) with added learning support features, eLiveLearn was design designed from start to fully support the complete Learning-Assessment-Reporting process in a fully integrated system. Educators can create online lessons and assessment tasks, Students can step through online lessons and carry out assessement tasks. Educators can then mark and provide feedback on students work and generate live reports. In this talk, I will look at some design features of eLiveLearn and run through a very simple usage scenario (hands-on). I will also talk about work that still needs to be done to make it a fully functional ready to use system and some problems with the system. Audience comment and feedback will be most appreciated. This talk may likely be of interest to Educators at secondary and tertiary level. Daniel is an educator and runs his own IT company, Greenware IT. A Linux Roundup - Russell Coker My presentation will be a series of lightning talks about various things I'm investigating, covering new Linux PC and server stuff (including ZFS) and Android. Russell Coker does general Linux programming and systems administration. He is most well known for his work on NSA Security Enhanced Linux. LUV-Tech List Established ------------------------- Following requests and a vote at the Annual General Meeting the committee has established a luv-tech list. This list is for discussions of technical issues which are not Linux related (which should go to luv-main), such as other operating systems, devices etc. To subscribe: http://lists.luv.asn.au/listinfo/luv-tech Software Freedom Day Report --------------------------- Software freedom day was held in Melbourne with a series of lectures, a games room operated by Free Software Melbourne, 3D printer demonstration courtesy of the Melbourne Community Hackerspace, movies, stalls from the Free Software Foundation, Raspberry Jam, One Laptop per Child, and Linux Users of Victoria, along with a free lunch with open sauce. About eighty-five people turned up during the day, with a height of around 75 just before noon. The day was opened by Dr. Alison Parkes, a lecturer from the University of Melbourne and candidate for Lord Mayor. Other speakers included Lev Lafayette on free software and business logic, Chris Samuel, from the Victorian Life Sciences Initiative discussing, "Free Software in Supercomputers and Science", Tony Forster from OLPC discussing that project, Alec Clews on the Raspberry Pi, Andy Gleme on 3D printing technologies, Daniel Jitnah on free software in the education sector, and Andrew Pam from Electronic Frontiers Australia on data retention legislation.
