Andrew Pam first discovered an interest in boolean logic when his mother carried him in her arms at just the right height to reach light switches as they passed through doorways. He was lucky enough to go to a school with an obsolete PDP/8e: switches, lights, core memory, paper tape, punched cards and all. He first started programming on a TRS-80 model 1 level I and the first computer he owned was a Commodore VIC-20. He has run the gaming Miniconference at linux.conf.au in the past and enjoys playing computer games on Linux systems. LUV Beginners February Meeting: Video security monitoring with Linux

He will demonstrate setups using a webcam and an ipcam. The software used will be Zoneminder and VLC. He will demonstrate installation of Zoneminder and configuration, and also how to override a current bug in the current Zoneminder Ubuntu package. He will also demonstrate some interfacing with VLC scripts. Daniel is currently secretary of LUV. He has a particular interest in free software in education, and has been using Linux for over 15 years as his main operating system. He claims to have never used a Microsoft OS on any of his machines as main OS. There will also be the usual casual hands-on workshop, Linux installation, configuration and assistance and advice. We don't normally have a Beginners Meeting in January, but we've had an offer from an interstate presenter who wanted to practice his tutorial before presenting it again at the Linux Conference. Therefore we're delighted to be able to offer a bonus meeting which will make a great follow up to our last Beginners Meeting in November on nmap: Tutorial: Packets don't lie: how can you use tcpdump/tshark (wireshark) to prove your point. Chelton Evans will present a series of examples on Maxima's programming language from a pragmatic view (cheat sheet provided) to show how Maxima can be used: For example as a calculator, graph plotting, and solving a quadratic equation. He will offer an introduction to solving an equation f(x)=0 and why this is important. e.g. if a cannon fires - where does it hit? He will also provide an introduction to Newton's method for calculating the square root of two and a more complex solver, Newton's method with third order convergence, with an elementary discussion on numerical solvers and their merit. Chelton D. Evans is a teacher of systems administration (particularly Linux) and programming at RMIT's School of Life and Physical Sciences (SLAPS). His research interests have for the last five years been building a higher dimensional calculus of which the standard calculus is a projection, and a theory of sum and integral convergence at a point at infinity. He will talk about why you would want to use Nmap and give an example of a few scans he did on his own network to show the kind of information that others could collect. Or you could collect on others - depending on which way you lean. Scott used to live in a world where Free and Open didn't really mean much more than being naked and promiscuous at festivals. Then he decided to try a little programming and his world changed forever. He loaded the Fedora OS onto his Macbook and hasn't looked back. But feeling the guilt of taking advantage of everyone else's hard work in the world of free software got to him, so he thought he should find a way to give back even though he's not really competent at writing useful software yet. Scott is now the Vice President of Free Software Melbourne and does his best to help other people who'd like freedom or just any old help with computers in general. He hopes one day to be a Network Admin, and perhaps write some code that some one else thinks is cool. He's helping his son build his first computer too. But what is actually happening under the hood? How can we troubleshoot and identify the problem when things go wrong without feeling like we are working on some alien lifeform? This talk will focus on the basics of networking, the absolute fundamentals to any sort of connectivity. It will get deep into packet analysis using tools such as tcpdump and wireshark, help understand the underlying protocols and use this as a tool to troubleshoot some real life networking issues. Fraser McGlinn is a Network Engineer who has been working in the ISP industry for just shy of five years. Day to day, his role has varied from running a core MPLS network and provisioning new services to building and maintaining services such as Radius, DNS and NMS Monitoring. Fraser has been a Linux fan since a young age, and built his first Linux PC in 2007 running on old parts that he scraped together from the junk pile at the local computer recycler. It ran for a few years hosting web servers etc from under his bed. Sam McLeod, High Performance, Open Source Storage Sam McLeod has designed and implemented a purely solid-state, high performance modular storage system - that is completely configured and provisioned in code. The meeting will be held in the Boardroom of Electron Workshop at 3.30pm. The only business to be conducted at this adjourned meeting is that on the notice of the original AGM (to which you should refer), namely committee and financial reports, and election of the committee. Explanation: Under the new Model Rules, the original AGM, on 1 September, had to be adjourned because it did not reach quorum. If the adjourned meeting does not reach quorum within 30 minutes, then the members present (so long as there are at least three) can conduct the business as if a quorum were present. Note that the meeting is scheduled at this time and place for convenience, since we expect a number of LUV members to be attending the Software Freedom Day event anyway. However, keep in mind that this adjourned AGM is a separate LUV meeting, and is not part of the Software Freedom Day program. Software Freedom Day Meeting 2015

This month, Free Software Melbourne[1], Linux Users of Victoria[2] and Electron Workshop[3] are joining forces to bring you the local Software Freedom Day event for Melbourne. As the LUV AGM was adjourned due to lack of a quorum, the adjourned AGM will be held at this event. If you cannot attend, please consider sending your proxy. Notice of LUV Annual General Meeting, 19 September 2015 Linux Users of Victoria, Inc., registration number A0040056C, will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Saturday, 19th September 2015, at Electron Workshop, 31 Arden St. North Melbourne. AGM BUSINESS The only matters of business to be considered at this meeting are: 1. Confirm minutes of annual general meeting on 20th September 2014. 2. Receive and consider annual report of the committee. 3. Receive and consider financial statements. 4. Elect committee: office-bearers (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer) and ordinary committee members. Nominations: Nominations for committee positions will be accepted at the meeting. Running applications on the Web usually means that you must target it explicitly during development, encoding your application logic in JavaScript and HTML in order to run inside the browser. But with recent advances in Web technology, we can more and more treat it like a generic computing platform. Given an existing codebase in C or C++, it is no longer necessary to re-write the code in JavaScript in order to run it on the Web. Instead, you can port it using a standard cross-compiler workflow, emitting JavaScript as though it were the assembly language of a (somewhat quirky, but very widely available!) foreign machine. In this talk, Ryan will give some history on attempts to compile native applications so they will run on the Web, demonstrate the current state-of-the-art tools for doing so and the technology that makes them possible, and give a preview of the next generation of work underway to make the Web a generic computing platform. Ryan Kelly is a software developer with over 10 years broad experience, from contract development work to a failed cloud-storage startup to a stint working with logic programming in academia. He currently works on the Identity Services team at Mozilla, wrangling the code behind Firefox Accounts, Firefox Sync and other cloud services. In his spare time, Ryan has been porting the PyPy python interpreter to run on the Web, and has been consistently surprised by how well this seems to work in practice. This tutorial will be run on Xen servers run by Russell. The OS images will be available on USB sticks for anyone who wants to run it on their own virtual machines. Xen and Kvm should work without much effort and other virtual machines should work with a little more effort. Russell has done lots of Linux development over the years, mostly involved with Debian. There will also be the usual casual hands-on workshop, Linux installation, configuration and assistance and advice. Bring your laptop if you need help with a particular issue. First, Open software was built on closed toolchains such as compilers and source code management systems. Then the toolchains themselves opened up, giving us a fully Open software stack and toolchain. Then Open Source Hardware (OSH) began to give us accessible physical platforms on which to run our code, but the hardware itself was still designed on closed tools. Then the rise of FOSS CAD (Computer Aided Design) projects such as KiCad and gEDA allowed us to design our OSH projects using Open tools. But even OSH projects designed using FOSS tools are typically manufactured using big, expensive, closed-source machines such as pick-and-place robots. Now even that barrier is being broken down by Open Source. The last 12 months has seen a rapid expansion of the Open revolution into the electronics manufacturing space, with a combination of motion control systems, machine chassis reference designs, and FOSS CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) software projects maturing into credible competitors to the entrenched proprietary CAM equipment suppliers. In this talk Jonathan will demonstrate how he combined a variety of Open Source projects to build his own pick-and-place machine for about $1000 over just a few weeks of spare time, allowing him to assemble Open Hardware projects using Open machines right from the bare PCB. He'll also bring along his pick-and-place machine so you can see it in action. Jon Oxer is happiest when working right at the intersection of hardware, software, mechatronics, and magic. He's past President of Linux Australia, founder of web application development company IVT, founder of open hardware manufacturer Freetronics, and author or co-author of a number of books including "How To Build A Website And Stay Sane", "Ubuntu Hacks", "Quickstart Guide to Google AdWords", and "Practical Arduino". It combines multi-node software deployment, ad hoc task execution, and configuration management. It manages nodes over SSH or PowerShell and requires Python (2.4 or later) to be installed on them. Modules work over JSON and standard output and can be written in any programming language. The system uses YAML to express reusable descriptions of systems. Andrew Pam first discovered an interest in boolean logic when his mother carried him in her arms at just the right height to reach light switches as they passed through doorways. He was lucky enough to go to a school with an obsolete PDP/8e: switches, lights, core memory, paper tape, punched cards and all. He first started programming on a TRS-80 model 1 level I and the first computer he owned was a Commodore VIC-20. Jointly developed at Oracle, Red Hat, Fujitsu, Intel, SUSE, STRATO and many others, Btrfs is licensed under the GPL and open for contribution from anyone. Russell Coker has been working on SE Linux since 2001. He writes most of the policy for Debian. He has done lots of other Linux development over the years, mostly involved with Debian development. Lev Lafayette, Educating People to become Linux Users: Some Key Insights from Adult Education We all want people to use Linux in favour of non-FOSS operating systems. But how do we convince them to do so? Having done so, how do we convince them to become good computer users who will use their systems in an effective manner? "User education" is a much-lauded phrase in the IT world, but in many cases technology specialists have expressed a great deal of frustration in their attempts. However it doesn't have to be this way. Key insights from adult education can be applied to Linux user education successfully. In particular, educators will be successful if they take a systemic approach to the subject using andragogical techniques when evaluating the audience, the content, and the delivery. The end result is users who are motivated, who know what they are capable of, and have the motivation to find out more. Lev Lafayette is a committee member and past president of Linux Users of Victoria who collects postgraduate degrees when not being a political trouble-maker. He has been involved in computer systems education and training for quite a while, and in the past few years through his employment at the Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing (VPAC) has conducted such sessions for researchers at the University of Melbourne, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, La Trobe University, the Australian Synchrotron, the University of Sydney, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, the Australian Institute for Health Innovation at Macquarie University, the University of New South Wales... and many other places. LUV Beginners June Meeting: Getting started with Raspberry Pi

After some intro, he will take the audience through a brief overview of Raspberry Pi's latest development around the world as well as a quick glance of a sample of Raspberry Pi related projects in the Community. Then, in the second half of his session, Wen will go into some hands-on demos, focussing on getting a Raspberry Pi up and running as a micro computer running Linux. Wen is not really an expert in the field of Raspberry Pi, so please look at this session as one novice sharing his new found experience with other novices. Wen is currently the Treasurer of LUV. He has been in IT Profession for about 25 years, primarily in the system admin area - both Windows and Linux. He started to be active in the Free & Open Source Community since 2004, inspired by the first Software Freedom Day in Melbourne. Nowadays at work Wen is using RHEL. In his own time, his distros of choice are Ubuntu/Xubuntu, followed by Fedora & CentOS. For non-OS software, LibreOffice is one that he has spent a fair bit of time with. Recently he has also been fascinated with the wonder of Raspberry Pi. Wen has a particular interest in introducing friends to using Linux and FOSS, quite often breathing new life into old Windows PCs after converting them to Linux. There will also be the usual casual hands-on workshop, Linux installation, configuration and assistance and advice. Bring your laptop if you need help with a particular issue.
