Hi All, Excuse the cross post but think this is worth a look... Since '95 I have been regularly following the Netcraft Web Server Surveys and thought I should point out that the 'net is about to crack the 1 Billion site mark. In their April Survey: http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2014/04/02/april-2014-web-server-survey.h… The first line of the report makes me think that the 1 Billion mark may have already been cracked... "In the *April 2014* survey we received responses from *958,919,789* sites — 39 million more than last month." Granted, a large portion are parked ( the early bleat in the report around IIS seems to indicate MS have been busy with the marketing dollars and parked domains) but in the end...1 Billion is an astounding growth over just shy of 20 years... :-) Its also worthy noting how NGINX has EXCEEDED IIS share in both the Active Sites and Top 1 Million Sites... Probably the only thing that saved him from bankruptcy was the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. http://www.pullman-museum.org/theCompany/ So other people's money was spent to make railway platforms narrower & tunnels bigger to accommodate the oversized rail-car and the Pullman Palace Car Company was able to operate along that route & eventually grow to monopoly status. http://www.chicagohs.org/history/pullman/pul1.html This is not the only example of corporate welfare in the USA transport industry, eg. some of the railroad companies lobbied to be purchased by governments. On the other hand http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amtrak points out that companies using privately funded railroads & now Amtrak were/are expected to compete with other transports using government funded highways & airports. A lot of different calculations are covered in that Wikipedia article & I guess anyone can find ways to support their own belief. In Australia, we might argue there is proportionally more government financial support for motorists, especially motorcyclists, due to more public health-care for the injured. If the Victorian government wants to support local car manufacturing, why don't they, (as John Cain Jr's government did,) replace car registration fees (& GST at purchase?) with increased fuel taxes? The "need" for road building in say, Greater Melbourne, isn't determined by the number of cars but by their weight, size & amount they are driven, all of which are reflected in fuel consumption. While this would be especially fairer for car collectors like Lindsay Fox, it would also be fairer for the rest of us too! And it might encourage those who occasionally need a big vehicle for their caravan or off-road trips etc. to use something smaller for their daily commute & use less or perhaps hire the gas-guzzler only when needed. Dav* - (I'm so pessimistic sometimes I think I'll NEVER manage to read everything on the World Wide Web!)

Hi all Yes this is a lecture - deal with it. Some things need saying. When someone decides to unsub from a list, things tend to be well beyond problematic. It's not the time to argue with them over the validity of their move, or the semantics of what constitutes name calling and who did what. The atmosphere has gone sour and continuing to argue on whatever aspect of it merely indicates that you're not getting that point - which is possibly also the origin of the problem. Bianca Gibson is an awesome member of the open source community, and if she decides to make this moves you can be assured that various other less outspoken people have also disconnected (not don't go off checking the unsubs to nerd-argue with me, as that would again miss the point). Losing anyone from our community, particularly for these reasons, is a bad thing. It is very important we are inclusive and accepting as a group. If it's "just" luv-talk people unsub from rather than all of LUV, you may consider yourself lucky, and it'd be an opportunity for a second chance - show those people in the other lists and at live events that you're a sensible individual who positively contributes. Our community has people of many different skills and skill levels. Yes some of us spell better than others. You can offer suggestions and help, just don't bet a jerk about it. And in terms of politics... while overall we're probably more on the progressive end, there'll still be a wide range of viewpoints. Making sweeping statements about people in the context of a broader group tends to be fairly uncool as well as regarded as extremely unfair - so just don't do that. I think it's cool to discuss politics online, just remember that email and online communication lacks the instant feedback that tends to keep live chats within sensible boundaries - and politics are, particularly now, of course a hot topic. Everybody has very strong opinions, and that's not a bad thing. Even when you feel (or know!) you're right about something, if you tick off everybody in the group by you blatting them over the head with it, what's the use? If you tone it down a bit, you may have more and longer opportunity to interact with the people with whom you currently disagree - and perhaps, who knows, you might convince them later with your insights and thoughtful contributions. Stewart Smith and others have summarised these things very eloquently at talks: don't be a jerk. Please axe the East West Link. It is a dude, the business plan so weak that you not even dare to publish it, and not even in sync with your own proposals before the last election. I also have a problem to understand why $50 billion for National Broadband is a waste while $16 billion for one local road is money well spent. Please start to work in the interest of Victorians, not in the interest of construction companies and financial institutions. My wife started economics in New Zealand. She gets utterly confused these days. She learnt that the GDP is only part of our well-being, looking after the young, the sick and the elderly is important too. I think that is in our interest too.
