October 2018 meeting

Hi all Thanks for everyone who made the October meeting possible and especially to Wen Lin and Shannon Pace for the very interesting presentations. Also, my apologies for ducking out on everyone after the meeting (I got little enough sleep as it is!). Are there any membership fees to LUV? Keeping an old email address going

Would be grateful for advice at the naive user level for help on how to proceed with following problem rhn(a)jeack.com.au is a functioning email address; that is I can send (eg this one ) and recieve emails from it ; the history is that ownership seems to have been taken over by different companies following amalgamations : jeack pty. ltd was taken over by hotkey was taken over by iprimus....etc. Question: iprimus now seems to have disowned the domain name (conversation with iprimus support ) ; basicly even 2nd level support doesn't know or can't be bothered working out how the current arrangement can exist. My suspicion is that somehow "rhn(a)jeack.com.au" has become an alias for "rhn1(a)hotkey.net.au" (which is acknowledged to exist) I would like to keep the email address; but their technical support seems to be suggesting I host the domain somewhere else, is this possible ? Just off the top of my head even if the domain name is no longer registered; surely this would have consequences should there be any one else with a 'jeack.com.au' email address ?; BUT if it was possible what is the proceedure ? regards Rohan McLeod

An Algorithm for couriers ?

Assembled Cognoscenti just wondering if there is a gap in the software market; especially the smart phone "app" market The problem identified seems to be a variant of the 'traveling salesman problem' TSP; which is old and presumably has multiple algorithmic solutions and software implementations. Problem is how to distribute packages to multiple addresses, whilst minimising travel time, and waiting time for deliverer and deliveree ! Tentatively an algorithm might go something like this; 1/ Sort addresses into an order which minimises delivery time and explicitly returns travel times (This seems quite 'do-able' as a TSP application augmented with GPS functionality) 2/ Minimising waiting times might be accomplished by: , -ringing first drop-off address[1] and offer drop-off time based on 1/ if no response or time not acceptable , -drop the address off the list and resort list ( repeat1/); if time is acceptable suitably increment drop-off time for address [2] - ring second drop-off address [2] and offer drop-off time ; 3/ repeat until address list or deliverer is exhausted ( :-)) 4/ add yesterdays dropped addresses to new addresses , next day The reason I know , no such software is used by at least one courier company, is they told me contact numbers for their drivers is purely voluntary ! regards Rohan McLeod

61GB DVD ?

Assembled Cogniscenti small mystery: I was looking at this DVD "The Lovely Bones" with a view to ; assembling the .vob files into one file to play on my machine. The 'DVD drive is actually a Blu-Ray R/W drive ; which can read and write 100GB M-disks. But I was still astonished when this "DVD", seemed to have 61 GB of files ! At first I thought it was just corrupt and reporting false file sizes; but when I started copying files they all seemed to be correct. Instead of say 4 - 6 .vob files totalling about 4-6 GB ; there were 6 groups of 6 vob files; anyone come across this kind of thing and why does it exist ? regards Rohan McLeod
