It is one of the hotkey domains. So I don't think there is anything
you can do. If the email still works then good. If not you will need
to find a new one.

Are domain names like company names in that they become available ;
if and when someone ceases paying the registation fee ?

When the domain expires then after a wait of 30 days anyone can register
it but with .com.au domains only the registrar knows the expiry date.
