The bulk of the presentation will demonstrate various UNIX/Linux style CLI tools (M4, Make, Plantuml, Pandoc, Graphviz, ...) and how they can be part of a build chain to keep your docs up to date and relevant. There will also be a discussion on why this toolchain is used, instead of tools like Javadoc or Swagger. The material is based on a short talk given at LCA 2018 'Using "old skool" Free tools to easily publish API documentation' *Alec Clews* founded Melbourne Raspberry Jam. He can be found online as alecthegeek in to many places. He drinks too much espresso, uses Linux as much as possible and wishes he was a better Go programmer. We're still looking for more people who can talk about the window manager they are using, what they like and dislike about it, and maybe demonstrate a little. Please email me at <president(a)luv.asn.au> with the name of your window manager if you think you could help! There will also be the usual casual hands-on workshop, Linux installation, configuration and assistance and advice. Bring your laptop if you need help with a particular issue. This will now occur BEFORE the talks from 12:30 to 14:00. The talks will commence at 14:00 (2pm) so there is time for people to have lunch nearby. We're attracted to Linux and open source because we want community solidarity and because we want to build things in the interests of the common good rather than the interests of shareholders or short term profit. And we all know that in software lies power: More than any other job, software developers have the power to shape the future. And yet, we're throwing away power because we don't unionise and organise and stand up for our rights at work. Why let our bosses keep all the power? Why squander our ability to be a powerful political voice? Why let our bosses control the technology, make all the decisions, and take all the money we software workers generate through our long hours of labour? Robert will talk about the importance of unionising and organising, and how to build a movement that gives us real power against the bosses and the ruling class, helping us build better software, better communities, and a better future. Robert Lechte works on software for the union movement in Melbourne, and on a few of his own open source projects. Robert likes talking about software at length. He likes talking about politics even more. Some say his ideas cannot be truly explained, only experienced. But he'll try to explain anyway, with slides. Food and drinks will be available on premises. Feel free to bring your own tablets and phones and have a go, but please ensure you back them up if there is anything you still need stored on them! IMPORTANT UPDATE: Change of location for picnic this Sunday

Start: Jan 28 2018 12:00 End: Jan 28 2018 18:00 Location: Infoxchange, 33 Elizabeth St. Richmond PLEASE NOTE NEW LOCATION The Linux Users of Victoria Annual Penguin Picnic will be held on Sunday, January 28, starting at 12 noon BUT *NOT* at the Yarra Bank Reserve, Hawthorn. Due to the predicted extreme hot weather on Sunday, the LUV committee has decided to change to an indoor picnic with dips, cheeses, cured meats, fruits, cakes, icecreams and icy poles, cool drinks, etc. instead of a BBQ. The meeting will now be held at our regular workshop venue, Infoxchange at 33 Elizabeth St. Richmond, right by Victoria Parade and North Richmond railway station. Please bring salads and drinks. The Annual Penguin Picnic is a big social occasion for members of LUV, a great opportunity to see in the New Year and LUV's first meeting of the year. As usual, there will be no LUV main meeting nor beginners' workshop in January. Main meetings will resume on Tuesday 6 February and the next beginners meeting will be on Saturday 17 February. Linux Users of Victoria report for 2017 ======================================= 2017 was a very significant year for LUV, as the first and oldest Linux user group in Australia finally disincorporated and became a subcommittee of Linux Australia. Many thanks to the LUV members and committees past and present and to the president, treasurer and commitee of Linux Australia for making the transition fairly smooth! We held twenty-one events over the course of the year and contributed to a couple of others including Software Freedom Day in September and a Melbourne Meetup end-of-year party in December. We had fifteen presentations by nine different speakers at our main monthly meetings, plus eight monthly workshops and a Debian 9 release party. UPDATE: LUV Main December 2017 Meeting - ISC and TERATEC: A Tale of Two Conferences / nfatbles

Start: Dec 5 2017 18:30 End: Dec 5 2017 20:30 Location: Mail Exchange Hotel, 688 Bourke St, Melbourne VIC 3000 Link: http://mailexchangehotel.com.au/ PLEASE NOTE NEW LOCATION Lev Lafayette, ISC and TERATEC: A Tale of Two Conferences ========================================================= This year the International Supercomputing Conference and TERATEC were held in close proximity, the former in Frankfurt from June 17-21 and the latter in Paris from June 27-28. Whilst the two conferences differ greatly in scope (one international, one national) and language (one Anglophone, the other Francophone), the dominance of Linux as the operating system of choice at both was overwhelming. This presentation will provide an overview of the two conferences concentrating on the two items of particular focus. Firstly, the advances and use of Linux in the field of automated vehicles, which was prevalent at ISC, and secondly, health care data metrics, which was prevalent at the second. The presentation will also provide some reasons for how Linux has come to dominate in the field of research computing, and what threats and opportunities exist to its use. Lev Lafayette is the HPC and Training Officer at the University of Melbourne. Prior to that he worked at the Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing (VPAC) in a similar role for several years. Since 2006 he has done a few things for LUV as well. Duncan Roe, nftables ==================== nftables replaces the popular {ip,ip6,arp,eb}tables. This software provides a new in-kernel packet classification framework that is based on a network-specific Virtual Machine (VM) and a new nft userspace command line tool. nftables reuses the existing Netfilter subsystems such as the existing hook infrastructure, the connection tracking system, NAT, userspace queueing and logging subsystem. This presentation concentrates on nftables from the user perspective. Duncan Roe has had a Linux desktop since 1993. A software developer, he first used Linux professionally in 1994.
