Software Freedom Day 2014: Saturday 20th September

There will not be a regular LUV Beginners workshop for the month of September. Instead, you're going to be in for a much bigger treat! This month, OpenTechSchool Melbourne[1], along with Free Software Melbourne[2], Linux Users of Victoria[3] and Electron Workshop[4] are joining forces to bring you the local Software Freedom Day event for Melbourne. The event will take place on Saturday 20th September between 10am and 4pm, and this year we have a new venue: Electron Workshop 31 Arden Street, North Melbourne. Map: http://www.sfd.org.au/melbourne/ We will be demonstrating GNU/Linux distributions, the Raspberry Pi, Arduino and more. You will also get to see free software games on the big screen - bring your laptops (and perhaps a mouse) if you want to help put some of them to a mutiplayer test! Newcomers will also be able to get help trying out and installing GNU/Linux on their machines, and can learn more about free software. We will have several guest speakers throughout the day with talks on OpenStreetMap, open source gardening, electronics, Bitcoin and more! Lunch will also be provided. The AGM will be held in conjunction with our usual September Main Meeting. As is customary, after the AGM business we will have a series of lightning talks by members on a recent Linux experience or project. If you would like to give a talk, please pre-book your spot by mailing luv-secretary(a)luv.asn.au. AGM BUSINESS The only matters of business to be considered at this meeting are: 1. Confirm minutes of annual general meeting on 3rd September 2013 and of additional general meeting on 3rd June 2014. 2. Receive and consider annual report of the committee. 3. Receive and consider financial statements. 4. Elect committee: office-bearers (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer) and ordinary committee members. Link: http://luv.asn.au/meetings/map Speakers: Richard Keech "Linux for monitoring and control in a sustainable house" Bernard Meade "Recent Developments in 3 Printing" Topics This talk will describe how the use of Linux with One-Wire bus sensors and controls can provide the smarts for an energy-efficient home. This will look at: * Hardware for monitoring of temperature, the use of water, and the use and generation of energy; * Wireless interfacing to smart meters; * One-Wire bus and how it interfaces to Linux; * How to switch devices using One-Wire bus; * Controlling data collection; * Choice of Linux platform (Raspberry Pi vs others); * Future work; * An overview of how energy and water use have each been reduced by 3/4. Richard completed a Masters of Environment at University of Melbourne in 2011. Richard's primary area of interest is energy technology and it's role in society's response climate change. Richard also has a Masters Degree (by research) in Digital Systems from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (1990). Richard works as a consultant to the Alternative Technology Association helping clients make best use of renewable energy and energy efficiency, and as a Systems Engineer for Solem Consulting analysing thermal system performances (like solar hot water systems). He has also worked for Beyond Zero Emissions, Red Hat as a senior consultant, and Cybersource as a senior consultant. Recent Development in 3D Printing 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, has started to influence a wide variety of research activities. Traditional areas such as Engineering and Architecture have greatly benefited from the new range of inexpensive yet highly capable machines, while areas such as Medicine and the Arts have just begun to recognize the potential impact. This is a truly disruptive technology that not only promises amazing things, it is already starting to deliver. This talk will be about how 3D printing is being used at the University of Melbourne, how it is changing research and teaching, and how it will change our lives in the next few years. It will also report on the recent "Inside 3D Printing" conference. Bernard Meade works at the University of Melbourne with the ITS Research team. In his role as Innovation and Outreach officer, he investigates emerging technologies and promotes them to the research community. He runs the Digital Fabrication service along with the University Digitisation Centre, which now offers several 3d printers and scanners to the University community. In this talk, I will be reviewing several web browsers that are available on Linux and look at some specific (advanced) features of a few of them. I will also look at some issues with specific browsers. At the end of the day, it is a matter of personal preference which browser one chooses to use, but more often than otherwise, having a few available on one's desktop can prove useful. Daniel Jitnah is currently vice-president of LUV. He has a particular interest in free software in education, and has been Linux for over 15 yrs as his main operating system. He claims to have never used a Microsoft OS as on any of his machines as main OS. In this talk Martin will introduce Heat. His goal is to give the audience enough information to enable them to start managing their own applications on the OpenStack cloud with Heat. Martin Paulo is a software developer with V3. Way back when Martin started out writing assembly for embedded systems. From there, via grid programming, he made the move to more conventional software development, as a Java developer in the financial services arena. At V3 Martin has worked on and with the NeCTAR (National eResearch Collaboration Tools and Resources) research cloud: possibly the largest and most complex OpenStack deployment in Australia. ________________________________________________________ Kevin Littlejohn, Docker – Containerize all the things! A short overview of Docker – what it is, how it works, how it’s being used, and some examples of what can be done with it (and war stories of what can go wrong). Kevin Littlejohn started life as a sysadmin, has spent much of the last few years as a developer, and is now being swept up into the devops world. There are two reasons for this revised notice: A. At the last committee meeting, the LUV committee decided that, since we were holding a General Meeting anyway, we would take the opportunity to present to members the proposal to make the mailing-list archives public, as an additional item of business. B. The new model rules require explicit mention of the option of proxies to go out with the meeting notice. Wen Lin will be giving a presentation on : Recent Developments and Extensions to LibreOffice LibreOffice is a free and open source office suite, developed by The Document Foundation. It was forked from OpenOffice.org in 2010. The LibreOffice suite comprises programs to do word processing, spreadsheets, slideshows, diagrams and drawings, maintain databases, and compose math formulae. It is the default office application suite in many distributions of Linux. LibreOffice supports many third-party extensions. As of June 2013, the LibreOffice Extension Repository lists more than 190 extensions. Wen Lin is the long-serving treasurer for Linux Users of Victoria and has provided several presentations in the past on Libre/OpenOffice. VPAC is on the ground floor of Building 91, RMIT, 110 Victoria Street, Carlton, on the north side of Victoria Street, about 50m east of Swanston Street, opposite the north side of Melbourne City Baths. Change to operation of LUV mailing lists

Dear LUV members and list subscribers: We the LUV committee have recently decided to change slightly the operation of the LUV mailing lists. The policy remains essentially the same: posts are generally accepted only from subscribed addresses. Up until now, posts to the lists from non-members (of the list) went to Lev and Les for moderation. Almost all such posts are spam. However, we had the moderation policy because, once in a while, legitimate members would accidentally post from a different address. The volume of spam we have to discard manually has made that untenable, wasting too much of our time. Under the new setup, now in effect, almost all our lists will automatically discard any posts from non-members. The only exceptions (for now) are luv-ctte (so people not on the committee can contact the committee), and luv-jobs (so outsiders can post job announcements). Both these lists will still allow manual moderation of posts from non-members. Currently, the amount of spam going to these two lists is relatively small. What does this mean for you? For the most part, you shouldn't notice any real difference (except that Lev and Les will seem less stressed by the drudgery of list moderation). If you subscribe to a list, you can post to it. The big change will be when you post to a list from an address different from the one you're subscribed under. Previously, such a post would have been noticed and approved by the list moderators (possibly after some delay). Now such posts will just disappear. So, when posting to LUV lists (except of course for luv-ctte and luv-jobs), take care that you're posting from the email address you're subscribed under. If you post to a list, and don't shortly afterwards see your post appear, then check the address you sent from. You can, as always, find out about our mailing lists from http://luv.asn.au/mailinglists.html.
