Reminder: LUV AGM (3 Sept) and proxies and deadline

Dear LUV members, This is just a reminder about the LUV AGM next Tuesday (followed by lightning talks). See http://luv.asn.au/2013/09/03 If you can't make it to the AGM and still want to vote either way on the disincorporation resolution, then it is possible to lodge a proxy form, to empower another LUV member who will be present to make your vote on your behalf. Proxies must be delivered to the LUV Secretary no later than 24 hours before the meeting, that is by 19:00 on Monday, 2 September 2013. You can read the current rules yourself at https://luv.asn.au/node/8 For your convenience, I've copied into this message the text of the proxy form, prepopulated with meeting details and the text of the disincorporation resolution. (Note that the form in Appendix 3 is the one applicable to AGMs.) You will need to fill this in properly with the names and details of yourself and the proxy. Make sure you indicate your vote by deleting either "in favor of" or "against" in the appropriate line, so that it reads My proxy to vote in favor of the following resolution or My proxy to vote against the following resolution You can assign your proxy to any LUV member. However, as we understand the rules, it can be counted only if that member is actually present at the AGM. If you don't know any other member who you are sure will be at the AGM, then we the committee suggest that you assign your proxy to the President, Lev Lafayette, who will surely be there. As our current rules work, a member can hold proxies both for and against a resolution, and vote them accordingly. If you're sending your proxy by email (as is most likely), then send the filled-in proxy form to the LUV Secretary <luv-secretary(a)luv.asn.au> by the deadline, 19:00, Monday, 2 September 2013. Reminder: LUV committee nominations close at midnight, 27 August

This is just a reminder to all members that nominations for LUV office bearers and ordinary committee members must be received by the LUV Secretary by *midnight* tonight. At this point, the best way of doing that is by email to luv-secretary(a)luv.asn.au A candidate needs nominations from two LUV members, and must also give consent. That can be done by three separate email messages. Alternatively, one of the members concerned can send a combination email containing the two nomination statements and consent. In that case I would recommend cc'ing the other members concerned, as a convenient way of indicating their agreement. I should also point out that self-nomination is not forbidden. So, at a minimum, a nomination requires just two members, the self-nominating candidate, and one other member. (Note, deadline for committee nominations is 27 August.) * Lightning talks Agenda for Linux Users of Victoria, Inc., Annual General Meeting As per rule 9 of Linux Users of Victoria, notification is given for our Annual General Meeting, to be held at 19:00 hours on Tuesday 3rd of September at the Buzzard Lecture Theatre, Evan-Burge Building, University of Melbourne. The agenda is: 1. Reports of President, Secretary, and Treasurer The current President, Secretary, and Treasurer will give brief reports on the activities, membership, and finances of the organisation and satisfy the requirements under the Act. 2. Election Nominations are sought for the position of (a) President, (b) Vice-President, (c) Secretary, (d) Treasurer and (e) four ordinary committee members. As per rule 23, nominations must be sent to the Secretary. I use it every day. Why? It helps me do what I want to do, both in programming and everyday life. Emacs is programmable (in Emacs Lisp), and so is immensely flexible, and has a huge number of extensions. It works on all the computers I use. It can do things that few other programs can do, like connect to multiple displays at the same time. In this talk I want to share some of this with you, especially treating Org-mode (the personal organizer), and Calc (the advanced calculator), and how Emacs works with other useful free programs, like X and ssh and git. A bit about me: Depending on my mood, I'll call myself a hacker or a computer scientist, or a sometime academic. I've been using GNU/Linux since 1991 or 1992 (so long ago), and have been using Emacs for even longer. I've been on the LUV Committee for a few years now, and currently am Secretary. General Workshop Area: At the LUV Beginners' workshop you can come along and work with Linux enthusiasts to assist you in setting up your system the way you want. This could include friendly advice on partitions, distributions, configurations, networking and specific applications. Bring your laptop! Hardware virtualization or platform virtualization refers to the creation of a virtual machine that acts like a real computer with an operating system. Software executed on these virtual machines is separated from the underlying hardware resources. Daniel is an Independent Developer and Consultant in Linux and Open Source System. He has been using Linux for over 10yrs, starting with an old version of Slackware, and then moving to RedHat 5.1 - From then on he never looked back. He also claims to having never used Windows or Microsoft software as his primary Operating System. Prior to using Linux, he was using OS/2 and before that he used plain DOS, IBM branded and DR-DOS. His first computer was a Commodore 128 system!! - Unfortunately - he also had a dab of bad SCO Xenix at some stage in his life :( !! Link: http://luv.asn.au/meetings/map Alec Clews, Recent developments with Raspberry Pi Raspberry Pi is a credit-card-sized single-board computer developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the intention of promoting the teaching of basic computer science in schools. Alec Clews is called alecthegeek on various social web site. He drinks lots of espresso and works as freelance consultant on software process and application lifecycle management. He first used Linux probably at patch 0.99p, founded the Greater London Linux User Group and organised the UK's 1st Linux conference. Russell Coker, Server Transfers Using Xen Xen is a hypervisor providing services that allow multiple computer operating systems to execute on the same computer hardware concurrently. Russell does general Linux programming and systems administration. He is most well known for his work on NSA Security Enhanced Linux. Other projects he has been involved in include Bonnie++ (lead developer), Postal (lead developer), Debian (developer), Linux Security Modules (LSM) (contributor), KDE (contributor), OpenSSH (contributor). Over time he's encountered tools that manage to get the job done with a minimum of fuss and have incorporated these into the set that he use on a daily basis; screen is one such tool and is sometimes referred to as the Swiss Army chainsaw of the Unix world. In a nutshell, screen is a terminal multiplexing tool. Rather than run multiple individual terminals on your local host (ie, PuTTY windows, Konsole tabs) for various tasks, screen allows a single local window to manage multiple instances of shells on the remote host. Library of LUV is a collection of books available for loan to members. The canonical list of library books is now at our LibraryThing, including the current location of the book (if blank, it's with the committee). http://www.librarything.com/catalog/luv.asn.au/ Please note that some of this list hasn't been updated for quite a while. If there is an incorrect entry please let us know. If you've had a book borrowed for "a while", please consider returning it at the next meeting. Really, a year is too long. Share the luv. The LUV Wiki page LoLbooks provides a queue of people who want to borrow a book. http://wiki.luv.asn.au/LoLbooks You need to login to the wiki before you can edit pages. Your wiki login is identical to the main LUV website login. If you don't have an account on the main website you can create one. If there isn't a queue, start one and message the person who has the book - which may be the librarian. Use the "E-mail this user" facility on their user page to message them. If that doesn't work, you could contact the luv-ctte. Books loaned out for a month at a time, but can be renewed at the end of month if there's nobody in the queue. There is a hard limit of a year however. After that you should have read it! If you have some reasonably useful Linux-related books that you wish to donate to the library please do so. Link: http://luv.asn.au/meetings/map * Andrew Robinson, R: A Statistical Package on Linux * Julien Goodwin, Networking things all Systems Administrators should know Andrew Robinson is a senior lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Melbourne, and on the Management Executive Committee of the Australian Centre of Excellence for Risk Analysis. He is the co-author of the books, Introduction to Scientific Programming and Simulation Using R, and Forest Analytics with R: An Introduction. Julien Goodwin is a Network Engineer at Google Sydney, working day-to-day maintaining one of the worlds largest IP networks. In the past he has worked as a (primarily Linux) Sys Admin on educational networks, and in small businesses. He has a long history working with the Australian FOSS community and was former LUV committee member and a member of the LCA2008 team. His talk covers the basics and "gotchas" of seven small aspects of networking, from weird things that can happen with traceroute, how broadband access networks work, how large scale Internet services use tools like anycast and DNS to share load, why NAT is not a security measure, and why IPv6 is so simple to deploy you're probably already running it. LUV Needs A New Server: Please Donate!

Dear LUV-members, The time has come for a generous person or organisation to donate a server to Linux Users of Victoria. It doesn't have to be brand new; a few year's old is fine. As long as it's rack mountable (1RU or 2RU) and comes with rack mounting rails, that has 4 GB of RAM, 2*120 GB disks, and 64 bit CPU(s). Of course, if you can provide better than that, that's really good too. As you can imagine, LUV will be deeply appreciative of any company or individual who makes such a donate. Chris Samuel, senior systems administrator at the Victorian Life Sciences Initiative, will be introducing Avoca - currently the 33rd most powerful computer in the world; and housed right here in Melbourne. Martin Paulo: An introduction to OpenStack Martin Paulo is a software developer with VeRSI (the Victorian eResearch Strategic Initiative). Way back when Martin started out writing assembly for embedded systems. From there, via grid programming, he made the move to more conventional software development, as a Java developer in the financial services arena. At VeRSI Martin has worked on and with the NeCTAR (National eResearch Collaboration Tools and Resources) research cloud: possibly the largest and most complex OpenStack deployment in Australia. OpenStack OpenStack is open source software that provides a cloud computing platform. From its early origins as a small Nasa project, OpenStack is rapidly gaining broad industry acceptance. Its ongoing development is guided by the OpenStack Foundation, a foundation backed by many key technology companies. In this talk Martin will provide an introduction to the concepts underlying OpenStack, and show how you can get going with your own personal OpenStack deployment. Unlike many other online learning systems (Learning Management Systems) such as Moodle, Whiteboard etc which are content management systems (CMS) with added learning support features, eLiveLearn was design designed from start to fully support the complete Learning-Assessment-Reporting process in a fully integrated system. Educators can create online lessons and assessment tasks, Students can step through online lessons and carry out assessement tasks. Educators can then mark and provide feedback on students work and generate live reports. In this talk, I will look at some design features of eLiveLearn and run through a very simple usage scenario (hands-on). I will also talk about work that still needs to be done to make it a fully functional ready to use system and some problems with the system. Audience comment and feedback will be most appreciated. This talk may likely be of interest to Educators at secondary and tertiary level. Daniel is an educator and runs his own IT company, Greenware IT.
