After some intro, he will take the audience through a brief overview of Raspberry Pi's latest development around the world as well as a quick glance of a sample of Raspberry Pi related projects in the Community. Then, in the second half of his session, Wen will go into some hands-on demos, focussing on getting a Raspberry Pi up and running as a micro computer running Linux. Wen is not really an expert in the field of Raspberry Pi, so please look at this session as one novice sharing his new found experience with other novices. Wen is currently the Treasurer of LUV. He has been in IT Profession for about 25 years, primarily in the system admin area - both Windows and Linux. He started to be active in the Free & Open Source Community since 2004, inspired by the first Software Freedom Day in Melbourne. Nowadays at work Wen is using RHEL. In his own time, his distros of choice are Ubuntu/Xubuntu, followed by Fedora & CentOS. For non-OS software, LibreOffice is one that he has spent a fair bit of time with. Recently he has also been fascinated with the wonder of Raspberry Pi. Wen has a particular interest in introducing friends to using Linux and FOSS, quite often breathing new life into old Windows PCs after converting them to Linux. There will also be the usual casual hands-on workshop, Linux installation, configuration and assistance and advice. Bring your laptop if you need help with a particular issue. Link: http://luv.asn.au/meetings/map Speakers: • Alan Rubin: Using deep mutational scanning to understand protein function • Donna Benjamin: Drupal8 out of the box Alan Rubin: Using deep mutational scanning to understand protein function High-throughput DNA sequencing enables researchers to identify normal and disease-associated genetic variation faster than ever before. However, the functional consequences of most mutations are unknown. Deep mutational scanning is a method for directly measuring the activity of hundreds of thousands of variants of a protein quickly, easily, and cheaply. This allows researchers to analyze huge quantities of data and identify interesting targets for further research in a variety of contexts, from aiding the assessment of clinical variants to guiding protein engineering. Alan will describe a typical deep mutational scanning experiment, and give examples of applications for this technology. He will also present Enrich 2, a Python-based software package that makes deep mutational scanning data analysis accessible to experimental biologists while providing an extensible framework for bioinformaticians manipulating these large datasets. Alan Rubin is a computational biologist at The Walter and Eliza Hall Insitute of Medical Research, where he works in the labs of Tony Papenfuss and Terry Speed in the Bioinformatics division. He joined the institute in February of 2014 after completing his PhD with Phil Green in the Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington. His primary research interests are functional genomics and genomic technology development. Donna Benjamin: Drupal8 out of the box Drupal 8 has been in development for over 4 years. Now in Beta, the community is working hard to resolve the remaining release blockers. Even so, Drupal 8 is a huge step forward. With the WYSIWYG CKeditor and Views module now in core Drupal 8 is a very capable and easy to use content management platform. The new configuration management system and approach to web services will make life easier for Devops and integrations. Donna will outline the 8 big changes in Drupal 8 and demo what it can do out of the box. Donna Benjamin runs a small business called Creative Contingencies, sits on the board of the Drupal Association and chairs the Drupal Community Working Group. She also served as President of LUV from 2008 to 2010. It supports several major programming techniques: imperative, functional, and object-oriented programming. It has an active community and a large library of components that make it easy to build on the work of others and share your own work. Ruby also makes it easy to write tests to ensure your software works as intended and to include documentation along with your programs. Andrew Pam will introduce the Ruby programming language, show the basic syntax and features, and demonstrate how you can get started with Ruby. Andrew has over thirty years experience in the computer industry and is currently president of LUV. He is an active advocate of Free and Open Source software and free speech rights, and is currently developing a software-as-a-service web application using Ruby on Rails. The project is mature - over 20 years since its original inception - and is especially attractive for those tackling harder systems-level performance problems. This talk will focus on recent development activity in PCP. In particular, its support for analysing containers without a need to install anything into each monitored container. We'll explore each of the kernel features that back the userspace container concept, the performance metrics that the kernel makes available for each container, and how this information is extracted and represented in PCP. Nathan Scott is one of the primary developers in the Performance Co-Pilot project and currently works at Red Hat in the performance tools group. Paul Fenwick: Android Privacy 101 Smartphones and tablets are now everywhere, but despite more people owning these devices, very few are aware of the privacy implications of the system and apps they use. This is made worse as users often feel they have little choice but to grant extended permissions to apps to get the functionality they need. In this talk we'll examine just how much data your phone leaks to both app developers and third parties, and most importantly what you can do about it. We'll cover how to revoke permissions for apps that try to overextend their reach, how to observe what information apps are gathering about you, how to prevent your device broadcasting its WiFi presence even when WiFi is "disabled", and a variety of tools you can use to protect your privacy when using Android. Paul Fenwick is an internationally acclaimed public speaker, developer, and science educator. Paul is well known for presenting on a diverse range of topics including privacy, neuroscience and neuroethics, Klingon programming, open source, depression and mental health, advancements in science, diversity, autonomous agents, and minesweeper automation. His dynamic presentation style and quirky humour has delighted audiences worldwide. Paul was awarded the 2013 O'Reilly Open Source award, and the 2010 White Camel award, both for outstanding contributions to the open source community. He'll also have a look at what are the common offerings for Linux based cloud software systems. Daniel is currently vice-president of LUV. He has a particular interest in free software in education, and has been using Linux for over 15 years as his main operating system. Katherine will take you through, step-by-step, the basic approaches to digital storytelling. In this way you can create an effective and original digital adventure. Katherine Phelps BA (Hons), MFA, PhD is an expert in storytelling for digital media. She has been a lecturer and post-graduate supervisor at RMIT and Victoria University, specialising in storytelling for computer game design. She has written for Nickelodeon Cartoons and been writer/producer for numerous comedy festival shows, garnering awards for her scripts and a five star review. Daniel Hall: Deploying Microservices Effectively We have all heard how Microservices are changing the way people are building applications. They allow developers to build strict componentization between services and make things much easier to maintain in the long run. They allow you to make your deployments fast, efficient and much less dangerous. At LIFX we wanted to take advantage of microservices but as a startup we don't have the same budget that everyone else does. Luckily using a combination of Docker, Apache Mesos, Marathon and Chronos we have built an architecture that allows us to effectively utilise microservices. Even though each of our services have drastically different requirements we can now use our available computing power in the most effective way. This talk is aimed at systems administrators who are grappling with the complexities of deploying web services or want to get a high level overview on how Docker, Marathon and Mesos can work together to make your life easier. Daniel Hall manages cloud services for IoT (Internet of Things) company LIFX. When not playing with pretty lights he spends time working on RatticDB. Daniel also wrote Ansible Configuration Management, which will shortly be in its second edition. Kids love to code when it is taught in a fun way. By extending their minds through games they are encouraged to think creatively and to build problem solving skills and learn through exploring. As well as helping solve a future skills shortage, it also hones problem solving abilities and builds digital confidence for children today, and will help them to better understand the world around them in the future. Whether children want to become farmers, doctors, teachers, or entrepreneurs, it will be easier for them to achieve their dreams in the digital age if they have some background in computational thinking. Keiran Nolan's career has evolved over the past few years from a role as Network Administrator for primary schools (implementing open source and cloud based technologies) to a Cloud Migration Architect role with one of the leading K-12 schools in NSW and more recently to an eLearning/Cloud Migration role at one of the most pedagogically innovative schools in Melbourne. Martin Harris is far from an expert in programming or computers, however there is a connection. Almost all broadband fibre communications networks incorporate components that he helped develop at Australian Optical Fibre (Research) Canberra in the early '80's. After leaving AOFR he set up Optiscan, a company in Dandenong developing novel medical endoscopes. These allowed high magnification images of the cells of interior of the human intestine without the risks of biopsy and the delays of conventional histological sectioning. This uses a scanning spot principle to isolate the focal plane using a mechanically rastered single mode fibre tip. The principle and the associated devices resulted in an R&D 100 award and a Clunies Ross medal. Stewart Smith: OpenPower and POWER8 ----------------------------------- IBM has opened up over 420,000 lines of Power8 firmware code under the auspices of the OpenPower Foundation. The two main elements of the firmware are called hostboot, which is the hardware power-on and testing chunk of the code, and OPAL, which is short for the Open Power Abstraction Layer and which itself is comprised of three sub-components called skiboot, skiroot, and skirun. Stewart Smith currently works for IBM in the Linux Technology Center on KVM on POWER and OPAL firmware, giving him a job that is even harder to explain to non-Linux geek people than ever before. Previously he worked for Percona as Director of Server Development where he oversaw development of many of Percona’s software products. He comes from many years experience in databases and free and open source software development. He’s often found hacking on free software, taking photos, running, brewing beer and cycling (yes, all at the same time). He once helped build a monorail in the middle of the desert.
