Speakers: * Jonathan Oxer: Open Source Hardware and Software for Assistive Technologies Open Source Hardware and Software for Assistive Technologies ============================================================ Learn how Open Source hardware and software can be used in a wide variety of assistive technologies, including wheelchair control, environmental systems, robotics, communication, prosthetics, games, and telepresence. Technology can be used to dramatically improve the lives of people with physical disabilities. Often this takes the form of medical technology, which is a highly regulated field involving very high development costs and long product lifecycles. Medical technology is a critical element in supporting people with physical disabilities, but it generally focuses on solving problems that are life-threatening or can otherwise be classified as having a medical imperative. Outside of medical technology that directly interacts with the human body, there is an enormous field of assistive technology that can be used to improve the lives of people both physically and mentally. Technologies that are frequently dismissed as gimmicks or toys, such as home automation systems and IoT devices, can be life-changing for people with disabilities. Not just toys for rich lazy people, home automation can make the difference between an individual being able to live independently or requiring residential care. Even more importantly, it can place the power back in the hands of the individual and give them the ability to control the world around them instead of relying on the help of others. Because the needs of individuals can vary dramatically, the Open Source ethos of modularity, improvement, adaptation, and sharing is ideally suited to assistive technologies. Existing projects can be rapidly remixed and modified to suit specific requirements by combining open source software, hardware, and fabrication including 3D printing and CNC machining. Open Source technologies can give people with disabilities new powers far beyond what an average human can achieve, turning them into DIY superhumans. Jon Oxer has been hacking on both hardware and software since he was a little tacker. Most recently he's been focusing more on the Open Hardware side, co-founding Freetronics as a result of organising the first Arduino Miniconf at LCA2010 and designing the Arduino-based payloads that were sent into orbit in 2013 on board satellites ArduSat-X and ArduSat-1. His books include "Ubuntu Hacks" and "Practical Arduino", and he produces the "SuperHouseTV" DIY home automation / assistive technology channel on YouTube. LUV July 2019 Workshop: Debian 10 "Buster"

Start: Jul 20 2019 12:30 End: Jul 20 2019 16:30 Location: Infoxchange, 33 Elizabeth St. Richmond Link: http://luv.asn.au/meetings/map Celebrating the release of Debian 10 "Buster": * In this release, GNOME defaults to using the Wayland display server instead of Xorg. * For those in security-sensitive environments AppArmor, a mandatory access control framework for restricting programs' capabilities, is installed and enabled by default. * Network filtering is based on the nftables framework by default. * Secure Boot support is included in this release for amd64, i386 and arm64 architectures and should work out of the box on most Secure Boot-enabled machines. This means users should no longer need to disable Secure Boot support in the firmware configuration. * The cups and cups-filters packages are installed by default in Debian 10 "buster", giving users everything that is needed to take advantage of driverless printing. We will be trying it out and copies will be available for people who can't or don't want to download it. There will also be the usual casual hands-on workshop, Linux installation, configuration and assistance and advice. Bring your laptop if you need help with a particular issue. This will now occur *BEFORE* the talks from 12:30 to 14:00. The talks will commence at 14:00 (2pm) so there is time for people to have lunch nearby. But what happens when you need to install a kernel update, or do some hardware maintenance, or the cosmic rays hit that particular part of your motherboard and cause a failure? You'd like your network to keep on ticking of course, so you need a backup firewall, and ideally it would just kick into gear without any human encouragement. Adrian will talk about some ways to build such a beast [ab]using Linux tools you probably already have. Adrian Close has worked in the local Internet industry for the last 25 years or so, doing *nix sysadmin, security and networking, and generally just trying to make stuff work. He has a particular fascination with redundant network setups with automatic failover, possibly because he also likes to sleep. Data we consciously produce ourselves is massive, however the machine data produced automatically by business systems, industrial processes, appliances, telemetry and literally any digital process is inconceivably vast. Through this session Matt will discuss why teasing out real time insights from previously undervalued machine data sources such as log files and wire data matters and how we can turn the noise into actionable answers. Matt will also introduce Splunk as a platform which can manage the entire process from data acquisition through to presentation and automation. Using some common machine data sources he will take you through the journey from messy unstructured data to clear insights where we can ask any question using an easy Search Processing Language and use these insights to drive Dashboards and Alerts, automate processes, and feed machine learning algorithms. *Matt Moore* is a Splunk Sales engineer and avid data wrangler working with machine data spanning everything from security and application development through to IOT and industrial data. Prior to working with Splunk Matt spent his days working with telephony and network solutions wishing there was a way to understand his environment without using telnet and notepad++ In his spare time Matt enjoys dabbling with crypto currencies and occasionally terrifies flying instructors at Tyab airport. Matt had previously experimented with living aboard and restoring an old steel yacht, but after experiencing the reality of cold showers and early mornings, now appreciates living on land with central heating and broadband. An Introduction to Packaging ---------------------------- The most convenient way to pass around software on Linux systems is as a package. Understanding what's in them and how to quickly build one is really useful to move work between systems easily. Andrew will start with a very simple package and build up to more complex packages based around the Debian package format that he is most familiar with. This is a huge topic so there is only time go over the major parts and he will be taking directions from the audience as to what aspects people most interested in learning about. *Andrew Worsley* is an embedded software engineer with 30+ years of programming experience. He has worked in a wide variety of areas from kernel drivers, compilers to networking equipment, AI programming languages and image processing systems such as Kodak's Image Magic. This included a variety of low level coding such writing ?-code for Network processors to porting kernels to new Intel and ARM based hardware. These days he is trying to keep bugs out of very high speed (100Gbit/s) encryption systems that are manufactured in Victoria and sold around the world. A Debian based Penetration Testing and Ethical Hacking distribution, with over 600 pre-installed packages. In this talk errbufferoverfl will cover as many things as she can fit into an hour, from port scanning, to web application hacking to exploit pewpewpewing. We'll be looking at some of the more popular tools available within the distribution including nmap, Burp Suite Community Edition, John the Ripper and many others. She will also discuss the phases we go through when conducting a security assessment from recon to exploitation and where these tools can be leveraged. Tonight, for one night only no server, or web application is sacred*. * But seriously please get explicit permission from the server owner before pewpewpewing things that are not owned or operated by you. errbufferoverfl was born of a moon-less night in an undisclosed location along the cyber ley lines. For the past three years errbufferoverfl has been using the mystical powers handed down for generations to write Python code and consult on security dark arts. She specialises in divination via web applications and calling upon the clouds to tell their dark secrets. She has strong opinions about client-side validation and how CSRF tokens should be handled. When she isn't testing web applications, writing code and zines you can find her in her garden tending to her poisonous plants and terrariums. Like all good cyber witches if unattended too long she will start divination by your laptop. The talk will be followed by a discussion forum. However, this can come with complex dependency and compiler requirements, which have to be explicitly stated in research computing to ensure replication of results. EasyBuild, originally developed by the Julich Supercomputing Centre, the University of Gent, and the Texas Advanced Computing Center is a tool that allows the building of software with ease, managing the complex dependencies and toolchains, and integrating by default with the Lmod environment modules system. This presentation will outline the need for tools like Easybuild, describe the framework of Easyblocks, Toolchains, and Easyconfig recipes, and extensions. It will also describe how to install and configure EasyBuild, write and contribute configuration files, and use the configurations to install software with a variety of optional parameters, such as rebuilds and partial builds. Finally it will conclude with a discussion of some of the more advanced options and opportunities for involvement in the Easybuild community. Lev Lafayette is the Senior HPC Support and Training Officer at the University of Melbourne where he has been since the end of 2015, and helps maintain the Spartan general purpose HPC system and conducts various training programmes. Prior to that he worked at the Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing for several years in a similar role. He's had a bit to do with Linux Users of Victoria since 2005, having been a committee member, president, vice-president, treasurer, and public officer at different points in time since then. The talk will be followed by a discussion forum.
