LUV Main November 2016 Meeting: The Internet of Toys / Special General Meeting / Functional Programming

The LUV committee has resolved to once again propose to the membership that LUV contact Linux Australia with a request to become a subcommittee of LA, and if successful to disincorporate as a separate entity. As previously discussed, this would allow us to take advantage of LA's public liability insurance which would give us considerably more flexibility in choosing alternative venues. It would also eliminate the need to file and pay for annual paperwork with Consumer Affairs Victoria and reduce the requirement for a large complement of office-bearers. The committee has therefore called a Special General Meeting of LUV to be held in conjunction with the next (November 2016) main meeting in order to vote on this proposal. Please either attend the meeting or send a proxy if you wish to vote. Nick Moore will look at the Espressif ESP8266 and its (mostly) open source toolchain. He will also discuss how to get started with MicroPython development to control simple hardware from the Internet, and the risks involved in doing so. Nick is a software developer and protocols wrangler who has previously presented at IETF, OSDC, LinuxConf, PyConAU and Buzzconf Nights. *Les Kitchen, Functional Programming* From Wikipedia: In computer science, functional programming is a programming paradigm—a style of building the structure and elements of computer programs—that treats computation as the evaluation of mathematical functions and avoids changing-state and mutable data. It is a declarative programming paradigm, which means programming is done with expressions or declarations instead of statements. In functional code, the output value of a function depends only on the arguments that are input to the function, so calling a function f twice with the same value for an argument x will produce the same result f(x) each time. Eliminating side effects, i.e. changes in state that do not depend on the function inputs, can make it much easier to understand and predict the behavior of a program, which is one of the key motivations for the development of functional programming. Scott Penrose is a Perl hacker with an interest in home automation. He has been playing with electronics since he was old enough to burn his fingers with a soldering iron. His first job was working with 6800 embedded CPUs in the early 90s. During the development of his solar powered house in 2000 he knew that the only way to be safe and not damage the batteries would be to fully automate the power and lighting throughout his home. Scott has continued hardware hacking on a causal basis, building musical toys, helping with the design and building of a sophisticated glide computer and doing design and embedded coding for buoys to measure waves in ice in the Antarctic. Although his day job involves programming complicated CPUs, mostly under Linux, he has retained a passion of for simplicity and feels that the Arduino meets those requirements. Software Freedom Day Meeting 2016

This month, Free Software Melbourne[1], Linux Users of Victoria[2] and Electron Workshop[3] are joining forces to bring you the local Software Freedom Day event for Melbourne. The event will take place on Saturday 17th September between 10am and 4:30pm at: Electron Workshop 31 Arden Street, North Melbourne. You will also get to see free software games on the big screen - bring your laptops (and perhaps a mouse) if you want to help put some of them to a mutiplayer test! We will have several guest speakers throughout the day with talks on Free Software in Schools, Open Street Map and more! Cloud computer architectures offer flexible and cost-efficient options for single-node data parallel tasks. In the past these two solutions have been developed and implemented independently, however a new hybrid system called HPC/cloud architecture developed at the University of Melbourne combines the two approaches with Linux as the core operating system, SLURM as a workload manager, and OpenStack for the cloud component. This approach better suits the existing workloads, while making it easy to expand to meet the demands of the future, including plans to have heterogeneous architectures as part of the overall Spartan system. As a whole Spartan serves as a template for any future general purpose implementation of mass compute resources. *Lev Lafayette* is the HPC and Training Officer at the University of Melbourne. Prior to that he served a similar role at the Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing for several years. He collects degrees for fun and profit, and is an incorrigible community activist, including as a long-serving LUV committee member. LUV Beginners August Meeting: File Sharing in Linux

The primary audience of the talk will be for beginners (newbies), but hopefully some of you who are familiar with Linux will get something out of it as well. Wen doesn't claim to be an expert in all things file-sharing in Linux, but likes to share his understanding and thoughts about this topic and also some of his recent practical experience in sharing files with a Linux computer using smartphones and tablets. The hands-on tutorial section of the talk will be "How to turn a Raspberry Pi into a Low-Power Network Storage Device" Wen is currently the Treasurer of LUV. He has been in the IT profession for about 25 years, primarily in the system admin area - both Windows and Linux. He started to be active in the Free & Open Source Community in 2004, inspired by the first Software Freedom Day in Melbourne. Nowadays at work Wen is using RHEL. In his own time, his distros of choice are Ubuntu/Xubuntu, followed by Fedora & CentOS. For non-OS software, LibreOffice is one that he has spent a fair bit of time with. Recently he has also been fascinated with the wonder of Raspberry Pi. Wen has a particular interest in introducing friends to using Linux and FOSS, quite often breathing new life into old Windows PCs after converting them to Linux. It replaces the mSATA standard, which uses the PCI Express Mini Card physical card layout and connectors. Russell has been experimenting with M.2 cards for high-speed storage. Russell Coker has done lots of Linux development over the years, mostly involved with Debian. Rodney Brown, CRCs According to Wikipedia, a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is an error-detecting code commonly used in digital networks and storage devices to detect accidental changes to raw data. Blocks of data entering these systems get a short check value attached, based on the remainder of a polynomial division of their contents. The following computers are available free to good homes: 1. An HP P4300G2 2RU rackount SAN server with 48GB RAM, 2x quad-core Xeon CPUs, 4x1TB 7200RPM SAS hard drives, four empty HDD slots with caddies (but the installed SAS controller only has enough ports for the four installed hard drives), and two spare HDD caddies. 2. A Thinkpad i1200 laptop model 1161-43M with a 750MHz Celeron CPU, 320M RAM, 1024x768 colour LCD display, 20G HDD and a PCMCIA Ethernet adapter. I have successfully run Debian 8 on it (including Firefox). 3. A VIA C3 "Samuel" 600MHz fanless Mini-ITX motherboard with two matching cases, each with a failed fanless PSU. No RAM, no storage but includes one plastic vertical case stand, and the cases can take a 2.5" IDE hard drive or SSD, a slimline laptop optical drive and/or a Compact Flash to IDE adapter. I might even have one of the latter somewhere. If the PSUs can't be repaired they can easily be replaced and I'm sure we can find suitable RAM - the BIOS supports up to 512M but apparently if you're brave enough to reflash with CoreBoot it can handle 1GB. 4. LUV Beginners July Meeting: GNU COBOL

Despite being much criticised (and for good reasons) it is still a major programming language in the financial sector, although there are a declining number of experienced programmers. In the early 2000s a free implementation of COBOL was developed by Keisuke Nishida and Roger While. This project was gradually transitioned to the Free Software Foundation and on June 17th, 2005, OpenCOBOL became GnuCOBOL. With strong C integration, GnuCOBOL has a high level of compliance with modern standards of the language. This hands-on presentation and tutorial will include some of the history of the language, why it is (surprisingly) still important, and plenty of examples to begin the journal into GnuCOBOL. Lev Lafayette is the HPC Support and Training Officer at the University of Melbourne. Dr. Gill Lunniss has a BSc(hons) in chemistry from Aberdeen University and a PhD from Imperial College London. Prior to becoming a Scientists and Mathematicians in Schools Project Officer at CSIRO in 2013, he worked as a medicinal chemist for GlaxoSmithKline, UK and at the Cancer Therapeutics CRC, Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Science. Daniel Jitnah is currently secretary of LUV. He has a particular interest in free software in education, and has been using Linux for over 15 years as his main operating system. He claims to have never used a Microsoft OS on any of his machines as main OS. Tim Baldwin, To Search Perchance to Find Improving Information Access over Technical Web User Forums ----------------------------------------------------------- Tim Baldwin will discuss approaches to tasks including thread discourse parsing and question equivalence detection as a means of improving information access over web user forums such as StackExchange. Tim Baldwin is a Professor in the Department of Computing and Information Systems, The University of Melbourne, and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow. He has previously held visiting positions at Cambridge University, University of Washington, University of Tokyo, Saarland University, NTT Communication Science Laboratories, and National Institute of Informatics. His research interests include text mining of social media, computational lexical semantics, information extraction and web mining, with a particular interest in the interface between computational and theoretical linguistics. Current projects include web user forum mining, monitoring and text mining of Twitter, and text analytics for the creative industries. Tim completed a BSc(CS/Maths) and BA(Linguistics/Japanese) at The University of Melbourne in 1995, and an MEng(CS) and PhD(CS) at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1998 and 2001, respectively. Prior to joining The University of Melbourne in 2004, he was a Senior Research Engineer at the Center for the Study of Language and Information, Stanford University (2001-2004). It is a declarative programming paradigm, which means programming is done with expressions or declarations instead of statements. In functional code, the output value of a function depends only on the arguments that are input to the function, so calling a function f twice with the same value for an argument x will produce the same result f(x) each time. Eliminating side effects, i.e. changes in state that do not depend on the function inputs, can make it much easier to understand and predict the behavior of a program, which is one of the key motivations for the development of functional programming. LUV Beginners May Meeting: Apache Cassandra Workshop

Participants will: * Install a Cassandra server * Create a keyspace * Create a table and insert data * Replicate data across a three-node cluster * Replicate data across a two-datacenter cluster * Set up Cassandra and JMX authentication Some virtual machines will be provided, but participants will need to bring their own laptop computer in order to access them. It is also possible to run the exercises on your own laptop, however some some advance preparation is advised - the workshop will require four virtual machines or containers with the following configuration: * minimum of 512Mb each * minimum of 2Gb disk space each * Debian Jessie Paul Dwerryhouse is a Linux System Engineer with Australia Post, a job that involves a combination of system administration, dev-ops, database wrangling, and plenty of coding. Implementations have been made in some mathematical programming languages (e.g., Julia, Python) but hardware manufacturers have been slow to express enthusiasm. If there is interest, he may also discuss user-created content and game development on Linux. Andrew first discovered an interest in boolean logic when his mother carried him in her arms at just the right height to reach light switches as they passed through doorways. He was lucky enough to go to a school with an obsolete PDP/8e: switches, lights, core memory, paper tape, punched cards and all. He first started programming on a TRS-80 model 1 level I and the first computer he owned was a Commodore VIC-20. He has run the gaming Miniconference at linux.conf.au in the past and enjoys playing computer games on Linux systems. He is the current president of Linux Users of Victoria. Tane is a bio-informatician, working with big data in the biological realm, and specialising in cancer research. Making sense of molten plastic - Adam Purdie A walkthrough of current state of play for home 3d printing and the biggest challenges making and getting your stuff printed, then move onto some interesting non-home 3d printing and where Adam sees it going in the next few years. Adam will talk about the leading and emerging tech in home 3d printing including colour FDM printing, nylon/carbon fibre printing, SLA projector and laser printing and where they may lead. Adam was trained in business computing and electronics in NZ in the late 90s. He has been developing software for 17 years and is currently working for Odecee as a build engineer and CI/CD developer. In his spare time he builds robotics platforms, integrated engine management for a motorbikes, website management systems, he is a diver and a painter. The Hexo+ Story - Etienne Zwiebel How a bunch of geeks knowing nothing about drones went from a dodgy prototype to the sweet final product. Etienne is an experienced software engineer with over seven years’ experience in the field of embedded real time software and aeronautics. Start: Mar 19 2016 12:30 End: Mar 19 2016 16:30 Location: Infoxchange, 33 Elizabeth St. Richmond Link: http://luv.asn.au/meetings/map Andrew Pam will talk about the history and use of version control systems, briefly mentioning Xanadu, SCCS, RCS, CVS, Subversion and Bitkeeper and including why and how to use "git", an essential tool for all software developers and system administrators and the basis for github and gitlab. Attendees are encouraged to experiment with git during and after the presentation. Andrew first discovered an interest in boolean logic when his mother carried him in her arms at just the right height to reach light switches as they passed through doorways. He was lucky enough to go to a school with an obsolete PDP/8e: switches, lights, core memory, paper tape, punched cards and all. He first started programming on a TRS-80 model 1 level I and the first computer he owned was a Commodore VIC-20. He has run the gaming Miniconference at linux.conf.au in the past and enjoys playing computer games on Linux systems. He is the current president of Linux Users of Victoria. There will also be the usual casual hands-on workshop, Linux installation, configuration and assistance and advice. Bring your laptop if you need help with a particular issue.
