Big understatement! It is a confederation of some of the best FOSS tools for mathematics and scientific computing. Some of the tools that make up SageMath include: Jupyter notebook, Maxima, GLPK, Gniac, Numpy, R, Scipy, GAP, FLINT, Sympy, Macaulay2, Blas, Atlas and Lapack to mention but a few. SageMath brings all these tools (complete and successful programs in their own right) into a single environment with a uniform interface and one simple language to bind them all: Python. SageMath is used in a wide range of fields by people of varying levels of education and expertise. It is used in cryptography, mathematics research, engineering, undergraduate courses and even high school. The development of Sagemath is very active with multiple releases every year. This talk will present a broad overview of SageMath and some of its capabilities with live demos. Xero is currently doing a PhD in Control Theory. He enjoys learning as well as intellectual challenges. Stewart Smith, Simultaneous multithreading ------------------------------------------ Simultaneous multithreading (SMT) is a technique for improving the overall efficiency of superscalar CPUs with hardware multithreading. SMT permits multiple independent threads of execution to better utilize the resources provided by modern processor architectures. Examples include Intel's Hyperthreading and IBM POWER CPUs. Stewart will cover the attributes of modern CPUs, where we came from and what the future may hold. Stewart Smith currently works for IBM in the Linux Technology Center on KVM on POWER and OPAL firmware, giving him a job that is even harder to explain to non-Linux geek people than ever before. Previously he worked for Percona as Director of Server Development where he oversaw development of many of Percona’s software products. He comes from many years experience in databases and free and open source software development. He’s often found hacking on free software, taking photos, running, brewing beer and cycling (yes, all at the same time). He once helped build a monorail in the middle of the desert. Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model that makes it lightweight and efficient. Node.js' package ecosystem, npm, is the largest ecosystem of open source libraries in the world. Members will be invited to install and learn about node.js with peer assistance. There will also be the usual casual hands-on workshop, Linux installation, configuration and assistance and advice. Bring your laptop if you need help with a particular issue. This will now occur BEFORE the talks from 12:30 to 14:00. March LUV meeting suspended pending new venue

Cloud computing is one of the most significant changes to IT infrastructure and employment in the past decade, with major corporate services (Amazon, Microsoft) gaining particular significance in the late 2000s. In mid-2010, Rackspace Hosting and NASA jointly launched an open-source cloud-software initiative known as OpenStack, with initial code coming from NASA's Nebula project and Rackspace's Cloud Files project, and soon gained prominence as the largest open-source cloud platform. Although a cross-platform service, it was quickly available on various Linux distributions including Debian, Ubuntu, SuSE (2011), and Red Hat (2012). OpenStack is governed by the OpenStack Foundation, a non-profit corporate entity established in September 2012. Correlating with the release cycle of the product, OpenStack Summits are held every six months for developers, users and managers. The most recent Summit was held in Barcelona in late October 2016, with over 5000 attendees, almost 1000 organisations and companies, and 500 sessions spread out over three days, plus one day of "Upstream University" prior to the main schedule and one day after the main schedule for contributor working parties. The presentation will cover the major announcements of the conference as well as a brief overview of the major streams, as well the direction of OpenStack as the November Sydney Summit approaches. Lev is the HPC and Training Officer at the University of Melbourne. Prior to that he worked at the Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing (VPAC) in a similar role for several years. Since 2006 he has done a few things for LUV as well. Jacinta Richardson, Data Structures and Algorithms in the 21st Century Data structures and algorithms are essential tools in the developer's toolkit, yet it is an area that is too easy to get behind in. The essential algorithms you learned whenever you did Computer Science probably included: * Shortest path and tree (and graph) traversals - depth-first, breadth first, cycle management * Sorting - quick sort, bubble sort, merge sort, binary sort * Searching - binary trees, B-trees, B+trees, red-black trees * Specific problems - knapsack problem, painters algorithm, decision trees * Algorithm techniques - divide and conquer, backtracking, creating NFAs You might also have learned the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), Singular Value Decomposition and the Convolution theorem. This talk will overview some of the more interesting parts of the above (such as the FFT and SVD) before providing an overview of some of the more interesting algorithms developed in the last 16 years plus some bonus reuses of old algorithms. Jacinta is a software engineer and Perl hacker, although in her day job, these days, she writes in Python for the Australian Public Service. You may know Jacinta from her many years running Perl Training Australia, organising conferences including the Open Source Developers' Conference, and generally being awesome. Annual Penguin Picnic, January 21, 2017

The Linux Users of Victoria Annual Penguin Picnic will be held on Saturday, January 21, starting at 12 noon at the Yarra Bank Reserve, Hawthorn. This is just near the intersection of Bridge Road, Burwood Rd, and Creswick Street, tram route 48, stop 22, trams every 12 minutes. Roughly a 23 minute trip from Southern Cross. Google Maps: -37.819794, 145.015785 Melways: 2H H-J 6-7 LUV will be providing various items for the BBQ, e.g., plates, sausages to cater for carnivores, pouletvores, piscevores, and herbivores, bread, onions, and sauces, and fruit. Please bring salads and drinks. The Annual Penguin Picnic is a big social occasion for members of LUV, a great opportunity to see in the New Year and LUV's first meeting of the year. As usual, there will be no LUV main meeting nor beginners' workshop in January. Main meetings will resume on Tuesday 7 February and the next beginners meeting will be on Saturday 18 February.
