Looking for spare computer parts or free computers to experiment with?
Something you can play with and nobody cares if it breaks? Come to the
LUV beginners meetings every month at Infoxchange. We currently have
hard drives up to 7200RPM 1TB SATA, DDR3 RAM (a couple of 2x2GB kits),
several older Nvidia video cards, an entire late-90s desktop system
complete with laser printer, SCSI scanner and gaming joystick, a
low-power fanless VIA C3 system, a dual-PSU HP Proliant server, a large
collection of cases, power supplies and motherboards (some with CPUs),
some keyboards and mice, and a few older screens and laptops in unknown
condition, plus more in Russell Coker's collection.
Please feel free to ask if you need anything, or come and scavenge. If
you don't know how to assemble or replace hardware, let us know and we
could run a workshop on refurbishing older hardware to run Linux!
Hope to see you there tomorrow or in the future!

Secure Shell (SSH)
SSH (Secure Shell) is a secure means, mainly used on Linux and other
UNIX-like systems, to access remote systems designed as a replacement
for a variety of insecure protocols (e.g., telnet, rlogin etc). This
presentation will cover the core usage of the protocol, its development
(SSH-1 and SSH-2), the architecture (client-server, public key
authentication), installation and implementation, and some handy
elaborations and enhancements, and real and imagined vulnerabilities.
Plenty of examples will be provided throughout along with the
opportunity to test the protocol.
*Lev Lafayette* is the HPC and Training Office at the University of
Melbourne, which includes responsibility for the cloud-HPC hybrid,
'Spartan'. Prior to that he worked in a similar role at the Victorian
Partnership for Advanced Computing (VPAC). He has had a little bit to do
with LUV for more than a decade. Outside of the technical world, he
enjoys stirring the possum in real-world politics, playing and designing
simulation games, and most recently has developed an interest in languages.
There will also be the usual casual hands-on workshop, Linux
installation, configuration and assistance and advice. Bring your laptop
if you need help with a particular issue. This will now occur BEFORE the
talks from 12:30 to 14:00. The talks will commence at 14:00 (2pm) so
there is time for people to have lunch nearby.
The meeting will be held at Infoxchange, 33 Elizabeth St. Richmond 3121
(enter via the garage on Jonas St.) Late arrivals, please call (0421)
775 358 for access to the venue.
LUV would like to acknowledge Infoxchange for the venue.
