Nathan Scott: Performance Co-Pilot
The Performance Co-Pilot (pcp.io) is a proven performance analysis
tookit for production environments. The project is mature - over 20
years since its original inception - and is especially attractive for
those tackling harder systems-level performance problems.
This talk will focus on recent development activity in PCP. In
particular, its support for analysing containers without a need to
install anything into each monitored container. We'll explore each of
the kernel features that back the userspace container concept, the
performance metrics that the kernel makes available for each container,
and how this information is extracted and represented in PCP.
Nathan Scott is one of the primary developers in the Performance
Co-Pilot project and currently works at Red Hat in the performance tools
group.
Paul Fenwick: Android Privacy 101
Smartphones and tablets are now everywhere, but despite more people
owning these devices, very few are aware of the privacy implications of
the system and apps they use. This is made worse as users often feel
they have little choice but to grant extended permissions to apps to get
the functionality they need.
In this talk we'll examine just how much data your phone leaks to both
app developers and third parties, and most importantly what you can do
about it. We'll cover how to revoke permissions for apps that try to
overextend their reach, how to observe what information apps are
gathering about you, how to prevent your device broadcasting its WiFi
presence even when WiFi is "disabled", and a variety of tools you can
use to protect your privacy when using Android.
Paul Fenwick is an internationally acclaimed public speaker, developer,
and science educator. Paul is well known for presenting on a diverse
range of topics including privacy, neuroscience and neuroethics, Klingon
programming, open source, depression and mental health, advancements in
science, diversity, autonomous agents, and minesweeper automation. His
dynamic presentation style and quirky humour has delighted audiences
worldwide.
Paul was awarded the 2013 O'Reilly Open Source award, and the 2010 White
Camel award, both for outstanding contributions to the open source
community.
As a Freedom Loving Scientist, Paul's goal is to learn everything he
can, do amazing things with that knowledge, and give them away for free.

Daniel Jitnah will have a look at virtualisation technology in Linux,
including a brief demo of setting up and managing virtual machines. Then
he will talk about what "the cloud" really is and its relation to
virtualisation and will demonstrate a very simple cloud system:
OpenNebula... just as an example. He'll also have a look at what are the
common offerings for Linux based cloud software systems.
Daniel is currently vice-president of LUV. He has a particular interest
in free software in education, and has been using Linux for over 15
years as his main operating system. He claims to have never used a
Microsoft OS on any of his machines as main OS.
There will also be the usual casual hands-on workshop, Linux
installation, configuration and assistance and advice. Bring your laptop
if you need help with a particular issue.
