AGM + lightning talks
Notice of LUV Annual General Meeting, 2nd September 2014, 19:00.
Linux Users of Victoria, Inc., registration number
A0040056C, will be holding its Annual General Meeting at
7pm on Tuesday, 2nd September 2014, in the Buzzard
Lecture Theatre, Trinity College.
The AGM will be held in conjunction with our usual
September Main Meeting. As is customary, after the AGM
business we will have a series of lightning talks by
members on a recent Linux experience or project.
If you would like to give a talk, please pre-book your
spot by mailing luv-secretary(a)luv.asn.au.
AGM BUSINESS
The only matters of business to be considered at this
meeting are:
1. Confirm minutes of annual general meeting on 3rd
September 2013 and of additional general meeting on
3rd June 2014.
2. Receive and consider annual report of the committee.
3. Receive and consider financial statements.
4. Elect committee: office-bearers (President,
Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer) and ordinary
committee members.
Nominations:
Nominations for committee positions will be accepted at
the meeting. You can nominate yourself, or another
member if that other member agrees to the nomination.
If you wish to nominate yourself or another member, and
can't be at the AGM, you should nominate a proxy to do
the nominating on your behalf.
Proxies:
You may appoint another member of LUV as your proxy for
this meeting, to speak and vote on your behalf if you
are unable to attend.
If you are submitting your proxy on paper, you should
sign and date it. If you are emailing your proxy, then
the date and act of emailing will be taken as the
equivalent of signing and dating a paper proxy.
You can use the following form, which you can copy from
between the lines of underscores, inserting your own
name and that of your proxy as appropriate:
________________________________________________________
I, [insert your name], being a member of Linux Users of
Victoria, appoint [insert name of your proxy], being
also a member of Linux Users of Victoria, as my proxy to
vote on my behalf at the Annual General Meeting of the
association to be held on 2nd September 2014, and at any
adjournment of that meeting.
[You can add here any specific instructions to your
proxy, such as directions to vote in a particular way on
a particular item. If you have no specific
instructions, you can delete this bracketed paragraph.]
________________________________________________________
Notes about proxies:
1. You can appoint any LUV member as your proxy.
However, the committee suggests that it's practical
and convenient to appoint the President, Lev
Lafayette, as your proxy, who can be trusted to act
on your proxy faithfully.
2. Emailed proxies should be sent to
luv-secretary(a)luv.asn.au, and must be received at
least 24 hours before the meeting.
3. Members who wish to send a paper proxy by post should
contact the Secretary for the postal address to use.
Such proxies also must be received at least 24 hours
before the meeting.
4. Paper proxies can also be presented at the
commencement of the meeting itself.
5. We recommend using the above form. However, under
the new model rules, you can instead use any form
that clearly identifies your proxy and is signed by
you.
Questions about this meeting are best posted to luv-meta(a)luv.asn.au.
-- Les Kitchen, as LUV Secretary.

LUV Main August Meeting: 3D Printing and Linux Houses
Start: Aug 5 2014 19:00
End: Aug 5 2014 21:00
Location:
The Buzzard Lecture Theatre. Evan Burge Building, Trinity College,
Melbourne University Main Campus, Parkville.

Speakers:
Richard Keech "Linux for monitoring and control in a sustainable house"
Bernard Meade "Recent Developments in 3 Printing"
Topics
This talk will describe how the use of Linux with One-Wire bus sensors and
controls can provide the smarts for an energy-efficient home. This will
look at:
* Hardware for monitoring of temperature, the use of water, and the use
and generation of energy;
* Wireless interfacing to smart meters;
* One-Wire bus and how it interfaces to Linux;
* How to switch devices using One-Wire bus;
* Controlling data collection;
* Choice of Linux platform (Raspberry Pi vs others);
* Future work;
* An overview of how energy and water use have each been reduced by 3/4.
Richard completed a Masters of Environment at University of Melbourne in
2011. Richard's primary area of interest is energy technology and it's
role in society's response climate change. Richard also has a Masters
Degree (by research) in Digital Systems from the Royal Melbourne Institute
of Technology (1990).
Richard works as a consultant to the Alternative Technology Association
helping clients make best use of renewable energy and energy efficiency,
and as a Systems Engineer for Solem Consulting analysing thermal system
performances (like solar hot water systems). He has also worked for Beyond
Zero Emissions, Red Hat as a senior consultant, and Cybersource as a
senior consultant.
Recent Development in 3D Printing
3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, has started to
influence a wide variety of research activities. Traditional areas such as
Engineering and Architecture have greatly benefited from the new range of
inexpensive yet
highly capable machines, while areas such as Medicine and the Arts have
just begun to recognize the potential impact. This is a truly disruptive
technology that not only promises amazing things, it is already starting
to deliver. This talk will be about how 3D printing is being used at the
University of Melbourne, how it is changing research and teaching, and how
it will change our lives in the next few years. It will also report on the
recent "Inside 3D Printing" conference.
Bernard Meade works at the University of Melbourne with the ITS Research
team. In his role as Innovation and Outreach officer, he investigates
emerging technologies and promotes them to the research community. He runs
the Digital Fabrication service along with the University Digitisation
Centre, which now offers several 3d printers and scanners to the
University community.
