Why not? Can't the same client code talk to both MySQL and MariaDB?

I have been told (but can't remember details now) that MariaDB SQL isn't always backward compatable with MySQL SQL. It probably will be fine, but don't assume that without good testing. There is at least one legacy closed source project I am involved with that is stuck with MySQL because of such breakage. -- Brian May @ Linux Penguins
